Curious, what became of the pilots and crews after the tomcats were retired? Did they transition to hornets or other aircraft? I'm sure they all had plenty of years left.
All of the squadrons that retired after the early 1990s transitioned to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The Tomcat was retired because of the sheer amount of maintenance it required, on average during the last cruise it took around 50-60 man hours per flight hour to keep the aircraft in flying condition.
