This is deinetely my favourite cello concerto of all times! As Volkmann was a cellist himself, so he understood the nature of instument perfectly. Unlike other composers he doesn't write high notes all the time, so cello doesn't sound like a bad violin. Instead he prefers to use lower and middle registers to reveal truly rich cello timbre. All this, including so beautiful and passionate melodies in this concerto, clear orchestration and virtuosic yet meaningful episodes makes Volkmann's concerto number one Cello Concerto for me. Thank you so much for uploading this truly unique concerto!
P.S. As for my taste, you've picked the best existing recording of this concerto to make a score-video. It's original version, not the dreadful and spoiled Becker's version. Also the soloist and the orchestra are so magnificent in this particular recording! Thanks!
Victor Herbert's second concerto for cello is pretty great. He, too, was a cellist.
in a world where saint saens dvorak elgar chostakovitch haydn katchaturian and lalo don't exist, maybe.
"...lower and middle registers to reveal truly rich cello timbre." Indeed. That is what truly brings out cello's nobility, majesty, and powerful magic charm.
Hacía mucho tiempo que no me quedaba tan absorto al escuchar una pieza para violonchelo. ¡Muchas gracias por compartir!
Красота!
Gracias por hacerme conocer esta obra de arte
Que esplendida obra, lo escuché con mucha atención. La orquesta en el minuto 10:53 se transforma con una intensidad impecable. Saludos
