  • How much of our personal data is held by companies to be traded for profit? Madhumita Murgia decided to investigate and was shocked by what she found out. The FT’s European technology correspondent argues it’s time for us to wake up and reclaim our identities.
Madhumita is a journalist, editor and speaker with expertise in the fields of science, health and technology. As the European Technology Correspondent at The Financial Times, she is passionate about how technology and science have disrupted and transformed all aspects of our lives.

The thing about less views is that, one has to search about privacy and identity to see this video in their feed and RUclips never recommends it

I have gotten recommended this many times over the past few weeks. It's not that youtube doesn't recommend this, it's that people don't WANT to believe it. This is a different issue entirely.

@9:25 about the Samsung eaves dropping TVs. Wikileaks exposure of the CIA's Vault 7 project, and the sub project entitled "weeping angel" gave the CIA unmitigated access to everyone of these TVs and could control the internal microphones remotely..could turn the on/off light off, and still record.

I cannot influence how policies are formed based on my characteristics from data that has already been collected, but I can prevent excess advertising exposure, limit the amount of data they collect about me by private browsing, using Tor and similar tools. And when it comes to it I ditch Windows and go on Linux at some point. Google will also become my tertiary account, not the primary one. I am already working on alternatives.

this has been going on for ages and nobody is really safe from it anyway ... no need to secure up now , because all the time you didnt secure up in the past is already enough. in other words might as well not give it a care because we're all footprinted thoroughly already. also, theres a lot more shady stuff going on that still has to be found out about ... as it always goes in these digital times.

I mainly use speech to text on my phone and my laptop to type. a lot of the reason being that my laptop is not always on my lap it's usually actually on the other side of the room and I have my mouse with me and my flat screen TV is my monitor. I went to googles website to do a search. I was doing a search and I asked if it was OK if I gave my cat chocolate milk. Speech to text should have just simply typed out what I said but instead it typed out "no". Which is nowhere near just some honest mistake from what I had said by the way the answer is no it's not okay but I still don't understand why my speech-to-text answered my question instead of just typing out what I said. this is no joke I swear to you this happened. This isn't Google assistant or anything either I'm just simply using speech to text to type out what I want to type

Watched this for a class, and I don't really agree. Companies don't force you to buy their stuff. You can still choose. I agree that I want my data private but at the end she seems to willing roll over that "she has no choice anymore". I feel pity that is her mindset. I view that I am in charge of my life, therefore its direction, my choices and ultimately my outcome is a culmination of what I choose.

If you read any psychology/neuroscience books you d then realise how much little control you have on making daily decisions that are in fact influenced by multiple factors. To think you re 100% rational and in control of your behaviours is simply false. Think twice before saying you re pitying someone when you don't even have the knowledge to do so ;)

She speaks PS. Equals Public School. Which, once, hundreds of years ago, they were. But now they are some of the most sought-after educational establishments in the world, and command considerable, although still quite modest fees. And then, Oxford, I think. Her voice is, what must be, for her, most embarrassingly childlike in pitch and delivery, and I think she was making an effort to overcome this. That is probably what you heard. She sometimes sounds like a ten year-old, poor thing.
