So excited to finally have the review and your thoughts on this! I played Dragon Warrior IV as you know, and so that final chapter was not in my version of the game. It is by far my favourite game of all time - possibly story sentimentality at it's finest if I'm honest. The music always gets me as well. The twins have their own battle theme and the boss music that only plays twice in the original (three on DS) is absolutely sick. I love it. Many fond memories playing this game and watching you play it for the first time brought all that back. Thank you for doing this. I'm so happy you enjoyed it and can't wait for the next chapter in your Dragon Quest journey!
I beat the original game on the NES a few months ago. The NES version is so good, for anyone wondering. I actually recommend it over the DS version, and I highly HIGHLY recommend it. Its amazing that the game is... 34? years old. It feels extremely modern, and the pacing is incredibly good. Idk what the DS pacing is like.
One warning in the NES version! The original NES game didn’t have the option to dictate commands. All the characters were set to AI decision making, which as a brand new thing when the game came out. This is most memorable with Kiryl who almost always chose Thwack rather than healing, which nearly always missed, making him a useless character. I prefer to control all the characters actions in battle, so I prefer the newer releases
@@KittysCat-j7x Some slight exagerrations here! Cristo is definitely not useless; careful use of the Tactics setting will prevent him from wasting spells. It is definitely not as bad as it sounds.
the mobile version of 4 is better than the DS version, because the DS version has missing dialogue due to budget reasons (if you play the Japanese DS version, that extra dialogue is included, it's just missing from the international versions)
@@CJP.-pq3kr Saying “false” is stupid, you can’t say “that’s not true because the modding community fixed it” since that is irrelevant. You can do anything with mods, might as well say every character is a choo choo train.
Since you played Octopath at one point, did you know DQIV was the inspiration to Octopath Traveler ,Live a Live, and so many other JRPGs like it? Well cuz DQIV is the one who pioneered the chapter based storytelling style since February 1990 and a lot of characters like Ragnar,Maya,Meena,Torneko,Alena,Kiryl, etc are basically iconic in Japan that most JRPGs are copying it from them. This may hurt you as a Final Fantasy fan but Dragon Quest has always been a pioneer of the JRPG conventions we have today even FF. DQ invented all of the aspects of what a JRPG should be while FF is the tinkerer of said invention by DQ.
Yeah I was aware, I just happened to play them in reverse but I’m so glad I got to experience the one that started the idea and concept! It doesn’t hurt me haha, I’m much older now and I’m wanting to explore the realms outside FF and I can see what most people have said to be true so far!
@@GenesisVII i love that you enjoyed DQIV even though you didn’t get to play Chapter 6. DQV all the way up to XI is gonna be such a blast man No FF fan had that level of open mindedness when it comes to who started who though. They always thought FF did this and that when history shows its not. Its DQ and DnD
Did you play Dragon Warrior 4 first or Dragon Quest 4? Let me know!

Since you finished Dragon Quest 4, it only makes sense to play DQ Monsters: Dark Prince for the full experience.
*Psaro's backstory with a twist*
Believe it or not I actually played monsters before this! Should have mentioned it haha, my bad!
Great video Gen! I started this game but never finished it for some reason. It looks so good.
Your ending credits music being dqiv dungeon music is a nice touch, its my favorite track from dqiv ost
Loooved DQ4 on DS. I went into it with low expectations, and surprisingly likes it even more than I liked 3 on super Famicom.

I’ll have to go back and experience it on the NES one day! Pacing seemed fine in the DS version

Great video. I've watched folks play DQ games, but have never played any myself. Might give this a go on my 3DS XL. Great review of it.
I had a real good time with it!
@@woogaloo it’s not on the 3DS. It’s on the original Nintendo DS so you need to have the DS emulator for that.
It’s the best one
This needs a re-release along with 5 and 6
oh you have to go on to DQ5... man are you in for a treat
I’ve heard it’s one of the best 👀
The first play through of 5 is so much fun. That game flows really well

False. Now you can patch the game like I did to include the party chat. Now the DS is the definitive version.

@@EPS5000 - you’re mad because you know I’m right. You support an inferior version.
