Obviously Sonic Youth putting out a song entitled "Nevermind" is going to have some connection to Nirvana. When I first read the title I thought immediately is this a sideblow at Nirvana? Listening to the lyrics I am even more convinced they had a go at their successors. Am I the only one?
I kinda doubt it, just because Sonic Youth were early Nirvana supporters and never really demonstrated the resentment some bands of that era felt towards them (particularly the Melvins come to mind). If it's a reference to Nirvana at all, it's more likely that it's about their rise to stardom and the toll that took (which Kurt himself wrote a lot about) than a dig at the band themselves.
As for Michael "kiddie fiddler" Jackson, I do believe the tone of her skin is lighter than his, in its original shade at least. Ditto for 2pac. I hope she's not fiddling her kids either.
This Video pretty much sums up this era of Sonic Youth perfectly: the aural & visual equivalent of a really bland & dry salad washed down with a soda water. Murray Street was a shining light that gave me hope for them again, and by Nurse they were solidly back on track. They should have skipped this whole album and just released ‘Renegade Princess b/w NYC Ghosts & Flowers (the song) as a a 1 off 7” single. Those were the only 2 redeemable songs. The LP as a whole was trash

I’m coming down off of shrooms and Kim’s vocals, the screeching guitars and churning bass in the 2nd half of this song make it a new favorite for me. Weird how that took 20 years to sink in. Is it the shrooms? IDEK. But I could still do without the tacky visual of the granola hipster couple cuddling at the rocking chair tho. Ew.
