I'm very old school and I love revving my v8 and shifting gears...but are we actually such "Pavlov's dogs" that we need to hear an engine rev or a gear shift through the speaker system? I remember riding electronically powered roller coasters without these amenities and enjoying them immensely!
I remember i worked for g m when these came out and i also remember a pimp my ride episode where they installed the speakers awesome car so that it could sound like a beast.
Absolutely share your opinion. FINALLY a carmaker figured out, what was missing with EVs. It's the engagement with the car and it's dynamics. At first it sounds pointless and silly, but I'm sure enthusiasts will appreciate it, and find more exhilaration out of driving an EV. Hope the other carmakers will figure that out too and follow. I'm very positive we will also see the return of H-pattern simulated shifters! Still, nothing will ever come close to hearing and feeling a real, analogue "ICE-car", but at least that is giving me hope performance EVs won't be as dull in the future as they are right now. Love it.
Us car nuts and enthusiasts just don't buy enough cars to matter though. Total corvette, camaro, challenger, charger and mustang sales barely break 350k in a very good sales year. Can't make $ at that low of a production run rate it's just cold hard reality. 😐 To put this paltry little total sales number in proper perspective. 13--15,000,000+other none enthusiast vehicle's are sold each year in the U.S. alone. So it's all those none enthusiast sales which make it possible for the so called halo enthusiast vehicle programs to even exist. Like farley said non v8 mustang sales have always made the loud inefficient v8 sales possible. Plus using mustang powertrain stuff in the f-150s for all the run rate savings and cost reductions. Even the mach e is helping fomoco keep the ice stang alive through new market sales and zev credits Ford earns on them. Hyundai n division is no different either, total n sales is what barely 75-100k a year globally across all model's they offer an N spec trim of? Vs hyundai group sells 4,5-5,5,000,000 other none n spec vehicle's each year. 👍🏻
You need to come up with some new titles my guy. I love your videos but every single new car that gets announced or is coming out is gonna "ruin the sports car market" or "ruin the muscle car market" or "ruin the hot hatch market" and not one of them have. The only thing ruining all the markets is dealer markups
I've wanted an Ioniq 5 since it's come out, and I'm a manual-only Miata and Mazda2 driver. In terms of attainable sporty cars, I always figured I would end up with a GR Corolla, but that has changed. I will be getting one of these.
I might have to go to Engineering Explained for this one, but why don't they put a manual on an EV? I really don't see that being much different than a normal manual... well besides the obvious hp and torque stuff.
I think the piped in sounds are a gimmick and will not stand the test of time, but the simulated gears and being able to shift is not a gimmick and is what EVs need. Not all of them, but having that option makes them so much more inviting.

So, you know how some cars have those fake engine noises coming from speakers? I always thought that was pretty silly. But you know what? I've been checking out Hyundai's EVs, and I gotta say, they might be onto something with their Ioniq 5 N. We're so used to hearing that engine revving sound to understand what's going on with the car, and now they're trying to make EVs more exciting by simulating that experience. Most things that try too hard to mimic gas cars will feel awkward so I'm definitely withholding judgment but I like the way they're thinking. If I had my way I'd just try putting really engaging simulated manuals/sequentials in them and stay far away from simulated exhausts. Some sort of buzz or whine is fine but I do not like the idea of a burble tune.
The coolest thing is, this is probably available to fine-tune over time trough software updates as they keep getting feedback.
I have a Kia EV6 GT which is basically the Ioniq N and I can tell you that it is a blast to drive. It’s my daily family hauler. It sounds like the Ioniq N will have a few more bells and whistles over the EV6 GT but hopefully we get a software upgrade when the Ioniq N is released.
Glad there was some Kona N love lol I feel seen!
i30 N.. love.. and N74 concept.. LOVE IT
If this is the future of what we consider a cool car... then idk if I'll be a car guy for much longer.
0:17 Hyundai Pony
0:21 Genesis G70 2.0T MT
0:57 small enough to pivot, big enough to make a difference
How will it simulate shifting? Just slightly lerching you 8 times going through the "gears"?
I saw one in person and it looked really cool
Hyundai the only brand I’ve thought was cool in the last 10 years. They’re doing some rad shit. Can’t wait to test drive one of these one day
A genuine performance oriented EV
I love CHUNDAI - the town of Chillingbourne. ❤
it’s reveal at goodwood was pretty cool
As an Elantra N owner, totally respect and appreciate those design choices. Thanks for your great overview, have been excited about this car!
It’s wild to see how far they’ve come. You’re right, they used to be the butt of jokes but within the past 10 or so years they’ve come a very long way. I loved the Genesis coupe, loved the veloster, and now their newer cars look and drive great
I can’t wait! I saw a ioniq 6 yesterday on the streets in action and I thought Wow! Very nice! I can only imagine what the Ioniq 5 N will be like in person? I have an Elantra N in that same Nürburg Blue. Well, that’s what I’m calling it. I think it’s gonna be glorious!
My question is will the shifting be good? Or will it feel like a CVT with simulated shifting
You really think Albert Bierman would make it like a CVT? 🙄
Got to wait for the Ionic 6 N, it's currentbbase model rear wheel drive is a delight.
Now to send some of that race knowledge to Genesis and Kia.
Tokyo drift broke their heart .when Han said “what you think I’m gonna let you roll around in a Hyundai “?
I'm very old school and I love revving my v8 and shifting gears...but are we actually such "Pavlov's dogs" that we need to hear an engine rev or a gear shift through the speaker system?
I remember riding electronically powered roller coasters without these amenities and enjoying them immensely!
I pulled a overloaded Uhaul Trailer from Seattle to Burlington, Vt with a old Elantra when my step daughter was 5. She's driving it now.
To put this paltry little total sales number in proper perspective.
That 2.4 broke their heart for real. They said never again
Good luck for the race!
I've wanted an Ioniq 5 since it's come out, and I'm a manual-only Miata and Mazda2 driver.
In terms of attainable sporty cars, I always figured I would end up with a GR Corolla, but that has changed. I will be getting one of these.
I’m with ya pal! Miata guy here as well lol
Going by the intro, you've been seeing shorts 😅 I've seen that phrase multiple times but I considered it an instant meme, freaking genius 🤣👍👍
I love how Hyundai approaching the EV market and I hope they'll deliver.
I think it’s a great way to start the ev shift moving forward
I might have to go to Engineering Explained for this one, but why don't they put a manual on an EV? I really don't see that being much different than a normal manual... well besides the obvious hp and torque stuff.
I think the piped in sounds are a gimmick and will not stand the test of time, but the simulated gears and being able to shift is not a gimmick and is what EVs need. Not all of them, but having that option makes them so much more inviting.
I’m a Honda fan. But I love Hyundai. Most likely my next car!!
I can tell you, these n line veichels are fun as hell to drive, i work around/on these cars at a processing center.
Hi, David, you are an awesome guy you gave me very crucial information about this Hyundai Ionic 5N I agree with the video title name this sports car will change forever with more power, more speed, and 8-speed manual transmission or transmission I liked this car it's going to reveal next year looks beautiful thanks
I wanna see a gas-electric hybrid N-Vision 74 (or whatever it’s called) make it to production. It’s like a combination of some of my favorite cars from the 80’s (DeLorean, Mk3 Supra, and Audi Quattro are what I see) It’s too good of a design to remain just a concept.
Finally an EV I'm interested in.
10 colors!!! My Veloster N came in 4. The Canadians got a fifth color cyber gray though which was way cool.
Dude, a pizza delivery dude was on Hoonigan like 4-5 years ago with a completely electric ae86 and it was using the stock transmission. If I remember right it was a forklift motor.
Idk I like Hyundai but I don’t care for anything simulated I want my stuff to be real.
I'd buy one.
My dad got an Ionic Q & loves it.
Hyundai is definitely steppen it up FAST!! GREAT JOB! 👍👏
Great execution from a company that’s showing “the J” how giving people what they want builds loyalty.
I really like how Hyundai put so much work into a feeling people have! ❤
This car sounds amazing. I agree with that.
i was literally waiting for this video
I got my license in a time when Hyundai was a disposable car, cheap but good on gas. For years i would have never thought about buying one, granted I still haven’t bought a Hyundai, I have now owned 4 kia’s 2 optima’s and 2 stingers , the quality in these brands have grown so much, we meet a lot of people that ask us what our 22 stinger is and once we say Kia we get a look like gross, people just don’t know how nice they are now, I’ve been asking my wife what will be next because we trade her car every 4 years, I’m not a big fan of EV’s but the ionic 5 N looks very exciting…
I think it's a step in the right direction, and it could be a game-changer for EV enthusiasts like me and others out there. I'm actually excited about it!
I hope you get to be invited because you’re unbiased and you always speak your mind . Great video 👏👏
This is a good video, but you calling a crossover SUV a “sports car” just feels so wrong and gross lmao
Damn it. I want it. This is what VW should be doing with an EV Golf.
Currently intrigued and excited. I like the looks and features. Let's see how it actually drives. Hope I'm not disappointed.🤞
I want an ioniq 5 n to put next to my veloster n. Cant wait!
Tell do it with dan he needs to show up to the race and talk trash to everyone for you David. 💪
its like hyundai is one of the only brands that truly cares about us car guys.. they know what we want, they know their identity, they just put effort into making their cars fun and excessible.. toyota kinda got it going aswell right now, nissan is kinda meh, european automakers are destroying reputitions with live service models for built in features 💀, hyundai's marketing strategy is one of the best, and sadly rarest remaining..
Congratulations and best of luck
Sounds amazingly fun. In the end, that's all that matters.
after owning the Kona N for 40k miles i trust Hyundai N division more than another car manufacture when it comes to making a fun car
