WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The first rule of the Dunning-Kruger Club is you don’t know you’re in the Dunning-Kruger Club.
Whenever someone calls with absolute, irrefutable proof of god and starts with, "But first, let's start.." you know it's going to be bs.
Oh, the irony of the caller complaining about people being confused...

As an atheist who was diagnosed with clinical depression due to very specific circumstances, not a single one of which has a damn thing to do with not going to a church or not having the happy vibes, and who has made more than one attempt on my own life, I find this one of the most dangerous and offensive calls this show has ever taken. Serotonin my left bollock. 🤬
I absolutely agree. I suffered depression before I became a Christian, while I was a Christian and after I renounced my faith. Like any clinical condition, it is part of who I am and neither faith nor an absence of faith has any bearing on my chemistry.
This IS an offensive, dismissive and dangerous call, you're correct. I liken it to those religious nuts who discourage people with serious illness from undergoing treatment and have them seek faith and prayer instead.
I'm also sorry to hear that things have been that tough for you at times. I mean that. The sad thing is that you are not alone and this is all too common. Also the good thing is that you are NOT alone - there is help out there. I know from my own experience that things get damn hard. Remember the rule, when you're going through hell - keep going!

It cured me of being happy. It cured my happiness and made me suicidal cuz I am Gay.
There are addicts that have attained sobriety with the belief in a higher power, so it can help some people who may otherwise been hopeless.
I agree with this caller 100 percent. Music does help heal people. Bands like cattle decapitation, venom, vital remains, king diamond, etc are great for that. One of my favorite tunes is by a band called Rage. Their song "Kill you gods" slaps.

In my conversations with people who have deconstructed from religion, it takes quite a while to deprogram - like 5 years. Which isnt surprising since most were introduced to religion by their parents when they were pre-pubescent.
If god is just whatever makes your brain produce serotonin, that reduces god to anything that makes you feel good. Music is god, a good meal is god, sex is god, a rainbow is god, a puppy is god. How banal can you consider your god to be? I'm sure he will be delighted that you hold him in such reverence.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression before I left the church. I think that having a community can help people, but it doesn't have to be the church. That's why we have bingo nights
During drug commercials rhey are required to list all symptoms that showed up during the trial period as side effects, even if there were only a couple of people who had them. Its not a "you take this and all of these will happen to you" list
My favourite was I once got a prescription from the GP and in big letters it said "do not eat grapefruit" I had never heard that grapefruit could effect some medications.
Oh and one of the listed side effects of antidepressants is "may cause depression / suicid al thoughts"

A conspiracy theorist, a religious person, and a medicine denier called into a show, but I repeat myself.
I've never heard a psychologist anywhere ever say at any point that going to a lecture where you're told you're helpless, worthless, and inherently evil, not to mention deserving of torture, is a cure for depression or suicidal ideation. Religion almost certainly caused those problems, it does not solve them.
I haven't the slightest idea of what the caller is talking about, and neither does he.

I don't usually comment but my 2 cents because mental health is such an important topic. Not talking simply about serotonin, we can get that in a bunch of ways that have nothing to do with religion. Any medication has the possibility of side effects, that's why you see a qualified medical doctor and (secular) therapy can be beneficial. I know a christian who has said similar things as this caller. Definitely an insult to me and many others. These attitudes are not only arrogant and dismissing but dangerous and damaging, not only to non believers but to believers as well. Cognitive Dissonance on full display here. This should piss people off.

Aside from that...cant defend any point he's trying to make.
The reason for that is fascinating, and few people know it. Some depressed people are suicidal, but depression makes them too lethargic and numb to actually make an attempt. The drugs increase their energy, before they start actually improving their mental state. They are still suicidal, but they now have the energy to do something about it. That’s why it’s super important to watch someone closely who has suicidal ideation with their depression, when they first start a new medication.
By this guy's definition of god, music is apparently god.
The arrogance to think most people are so ignorant they need to be coddled and lied to about the true nature of the world or they’ll commit heinous crimes is staggering. The idea that religion prevents heinous crime is easily refuted by most history books.
I counter the caller's arguments by pointing out that there are religious people who commit suicide, that commit heinous crimes, and are wound up tight as a drum ready to explode. How has their religion helped them live happier lives?
Then there is the caller's definition of a god -- any concept, any belief, any thing, or any person that cause a rise in an individual's serotonin levels, is a god to that individual. Even though we are not fully conscious of it, we worship people, places, things, and ideas that increase our serotonin levels, so we are all polytheists and monotheism is not possible.
OR, maybe when we are around our family and friends we love, the increase in serotonin leaves us feeling more relaxed, happier, and contented. Maybe that is why when we are around our loved ones life seems a little brighter, and worth living during times of struggle.
"Ok you got me on the suicide thing"... And they got you on all the medical claims you made. And they got you on a silly definition of god. And they got you on being condescending towards people who "need religion" because they are less "intelligent". In fact, if you analyze this video, there was only one thing they didn't really debunk from you. That is, that they are arrogant. And that's only cuz you ran away. I don't think it's arrogant to analyze beliefs and to check if they are accurate and map to reality. You are advocating just throwing that out and valuing the "serotonin release" above facts. I think that's condescending and arrogant, but what do we know... We're incredibly arrogant apparently.

A question I would love to put to the Talk Heathen crew (and all others in the atheist call-in family):
What are the minimum qualities and attributes that an alien species would have to demonstrate for you to be comfortable describing that species as "god-like"?
I ask as a child raised on fully-automated-luxury-gay-space-communism-science-fiction such as Star Trek or Babylon 5 that both included species so wildly and incomprehensibly advanced that we know them as gods, The Q, the Vorlons, and I adore that aspect of fiction. I'm not sure myself where my limit is before I point and say "these things are gods"!

The notion that we should reduce our capacity for knowledge to the lowest common denominator simply for an exercise in appeasement is baffling. He stated a couple of facts, but then immediately drowned them in drivel.
EDIT: the conflation of a mathematical likelihood with a "belief" is also ridiculous. We don't simply "believe" other entities exist -- it's just unlikely they don't given the scale of our universe.
EDIT 2: simply defining an object or being as "god" does not give said entity supernatural power. Also, because an individual turned to religion to make themselves feel better doesn't make the religion true or even helpful to everyone. Religion is more harmful to people and societies than atheism can ever be.

So.. If I define God as what we commonly know to be a carrot. Then - since we all agree that the thing we commonly call a carrot does in fact exist. I've therefore been able to demonstrate that God exist?

That's not how that works. Start by defining God and then provide evidence for the properties you claim god to have. If your god isn't a supernatural being in your definition then it's a mundane argument.
The caller ignores the fact that; there are many people of faith who fall into depression, because they don't feel they are good enough Christians, who become terrified of the world around them duw to neing taught evil is around every corner, who are rejected and abandoned by their faith, family, and friends for being LGBT, not to mention those who have undergone ex-gay therapy, who have managed to survive gay camps, been sexualy, emotionaly, and physically abused at the hands of priests, nuns, and other church leadership, etc. The church has ao g history of abusing and persecuting thise with neurocognative disorders like Terrets, mental illnesses like pscitzophrenia, disassociative disorder, etc. As the hosts point out; it has also harmed thise with treatable conditions by making false claims about beimg able to heal them, denying thwm avcess to treatmwnts and medications, etc.

I saw a science program a few ago that said that we have looked at something like 1% of the visible stars in the skies. Something like 1% of those states had planets orbiting them. Out of that 1% only 0.5% of planets ‘Earth like’ or suitable for life. If we assume that 0.01% of those ‘habitable’ planets have intelligent life on them that’s hundreds of thousands of potential ‘alien’ life out there in our galaxy alone let alone in the whole universe. Which for me is fairly convincing that there’s some sort of intelligent life out there in the universe, not that I’m saying the definitely life out there.
In the other hand I have seen no evidence that even comes close to showing that a ‘gif’ as described in most holy books exists.
I could see someone saying that religion could be a substitute for therapy but not medication. The kind of depression where you need medication to fix broken serotonin receptors is NOT something that can just be solved with spiritual or communal engagement.

There are actually a number of antidepressants that can worsen suicidal feelings. If that happens a change is made in medication to hopefully find a better fit. To say drugs that do this aren't being given to people is incorrect though.
People use religion to get over their problems, they also use cocaine and alcohol and heroin to get over their problems and all of these are bad and getting real scientific and professional help is significantly better , this is some terrible advice by caller

It's hard to pull people away from getting heaven and Jesus knowing you're going to die is depressing but if you believe that Jesus saves you and you get to go to heaven and see your family again it provides comfort in the area of dying.. and you can't blame people for wanting that comfort and peace in their soul

They do still, however, have prohibitions against apostasy that are socially enforced. If you’re not a Jew, they don’t care about you, but you may lose a lot if you deconvert from Judaism.
