- In this video, I unbox the Donner concert scale mahogany ukulele, model DUC-1. It comes as part of a starter kit that has everything a beginner needs to get started. It is well built with a good fit and finish. It is light, is very resonant, and has a nice sound. I will follow up on this unboxing video with a full review in the near future.

My first of many tenor ukuleles was a Donner Mahogany. It's still one of my favorites. I've been pleased with all of the Donner products that I've purchased - concert uke, classical guitar, guitalele, acoustic amp, and accessories.
Thanks! This is just the second Donner I’ve seen but so far, I’m impressed!
I was going to buy it and looking for this video. Amaizing thnk you
I hope you found it helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
That’s a good lookin’ uke.
It is. And it sounds good!
Nice mahogany wood grain 👍 good sounding Ukulele
Thanks for commenting! It is a nice one!
Nice shirt. :-)
That actually looks like a pretty decent instrument for the price. Some of these mass produced ukes on Amazon are really quite nice. I went to a luthier shop when I was on the island of Maui earlier this year, and the guy building the ukes actually said the same thing. LOL. He said it's really hard to sell $400 handmade ukes when the quality of the $80 mass produced models is so good.
I’m glad you like the t-shirt. I’m going to put the image on a future stompbox! I agree! There are some really nice inexpensive ukuleles out there these days! This is certainly one of them.
Lovely uke!
Thanks for commenting! I agree. It’s nice! These days there are so many nice ukuleles available, it makes it tough for a beginner to decide what to get.
good ukulele
It is a nice little ukulele. The full review will come out in the near future. Thanks for commenting!
I purchased both the Donner DUC-1 and the Aklot AKC23 for comparison. As a absolute beginner, I would appreciate any help you can offer as to which of these 2 Ukulele's, the Donner or the Aklot, I should begin with and why? Thank you.
Definitely play them both! They each have their own voice! Thanks for watching and commenting!
hi Steve, I was wondering, if you have done a review on the Tenor version of this ukulele?
Hi, Christy! No, I have not. I really liked this one, though. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@stevesstrings5243 ok thanks Steve and your welcome. I am trying to shop around for a decent wooden ukulele. So far, I only have the Enya carbon fiber ukes and 1 concert kmise ukulele but it turned out to have really sharp frets .
@@Snowbearkay Sharp frets are common and easy to fix. It happens when the wood in the neck shrinks from losing moisture. It has happened in instruments I have built. To fix it, put a strip of painters tape on the side of the neck even with the bottom of the fretboard to protect the finish. Use a fine sanding sponge at a 45 degree angle to sand the sharp fret edges until smooth. Remove the tape, and you are done! One of my favorite ukuleles is an Aklot AKC 23.
I just went to Hawaii and have a new interest in Ukulele's to get into. I've been looking on Amazon and have been looking at this model bundle to buy. Any thoughts on this DUC-1 model vs the DUC-200? Also, there's a Ranch brand of affordable Ukulele's in the same bundle pricing. Any thoughts on brands? thx
I have not played the DUC-200 or any Ranch ukuleles so I'm afraid I can't comment on them. I do recall that I really liked the sound of the DUC-1! The Aklot AKC-23 is a nice instrument with a solid top that sounds nice. Kmise also makes several nice instruments that are of good value. There are lots of really great choices out there right now. I suggest you check out my other reviews to get a sense of the options available to you. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for your wonderful review! Which one would you prefer in terms of sound and playability- Aklot or Donner? I am little confused with that. I'd highly appreciate your opinion. Thanks. 🙂
I have only had the Donner for less than a week so it may be too early to fairly judge it yet. I would say that they are both equally playable in that that are both set up pretty well. On the Donner example I have, the action is a little higher than I prefer but very playable for the novice ukulele player. I'll talk more about it in the full review. In regard to sound, they both sound good although they are different. The AKC23 has a solid mahogany top, compared to the DUC-1 laminate top. I think this makes it sound a bit warmer, which I think I prefer. That said, the DUC-1 laminate is very thin and more resonant than most. I would say the AKC 23 tone is cleaner, whereas the DUC-1 has more "shimmer" and also more punch! Again, I think both sound very good! Your ear may have a different opinion. If you want to really muddy the water more, a string change for either of them could also change their sound. The both come with Aquila nylgut strings. A change to D'Adarrio titaniums or florocarbon strings could change their sound in a way to change your preference.
Thank you so much Steve for your detailed response and suggestions. It was really helpful. Enjoy playing your ukuleles 😊
Hi Steve, I had ordered a Donner...the action was too high and unfortunately I had to return it. Then I got an Aklot Concert with Low G. Its just amazing. The ukulele is so well made and sounds superb! Thanks again for your suggestions.
I’m glad you like it!
