  • The truck started using massive amounts of oil, up to 3 gallon in 120 miles. In this video we replace the o-rings on the injectors and replace the turbo.

I had the same problem on my ‘95. I paid the ford dealership $90 to diagnose the problem. They suspected injector rings and quoted me. $1700 to replace the rings. I did research and found your video. I paid $80 for oem rings and my sons and I, with no experience, went to work. In the process, we found one burned pin on one plug into the driver’s side valve cover gasket and one burned pin on the under cover plug on the passenger side. We replaced both gaskets and a pigtail. While we we in there and had to pull glow plugs to “bump the motor”, I decided to replace all 8 glow plugs. ($85 oem). In the end, I spent about $200 and 8 hours to save $1500 and learn a lot. We have driven the truck 418 miles since the repair and haven’t lost an ounce of oil!. Incidentally, in doing mine, I found that there was not a single pink o-ring on any injector. It was a set of 2 rings to fill that space and the smaller of them was failed in all 8 injectors. Your video walked us through the whole process and saved me $$$$$$$. Thank you very much for your help

Because that's exactly what mine is doing,. All of a sudden it started using a lot of oil,. I've already put a new turbo an glow plugs,. an wiring harness,. I'm thinking you have solved my problem,.

I think this is happening to my truck. Mine smokes a little greyish smoke but not really any blue smoke and not an excessive amount like you think there would be with a loss of 4 gallons. The minimal amount of smoke is really deceptive when you're losing 4 gallons over a 200 mile period.

  • @bigmotoxer

It's best to push the o rings on to the injectors with a tube of some sort. Stretching them, even with the thin pick, makes installing injectors more prone to cutting nicking the o-ring when installing. Pushing them evenly with a tube (PVC pipe, rolled up flexible plastic, etc) will allow them to stretch only as much as needed until slipping into their groove. Do not stretch the new o-ring it may work just fine if you do but prematurely you may start loosing oil into the fuel/burning oil and find that your middle o-ring (pink) was nicked during install and has finally met its demise 40k miles later.

Honest question - why not replace your injector cups while you are in there? Cups are cheap but having to tear back into the vlv cover to replace them later is expensive (in terms of down time). Thank you for making this video. The previous owner of my 7.3 said he too experienced MASSIVE oil consumption but could never find out its final destination as there were no external leaks. He re-ringed his injectors, probably with offshore parts like most people are apt to do. Thus, I plan on replacing my injectors outright, doing a fuel bowl delete, installing fuel rail return fittings in the head (to make priming the new injectors easier) as well as replacing the stock 80mm turbo with an 88mm turbo. I will be doing other things too, but I just wanted to ask the question regarding the cups.

My 7.3 does the exact same thing. We just filled the oil today 3 gallons after 100 miles truck stalled limped home & watched your video. I went & chk my its bone dry. It doesn't leak oil I welded a new dipstick on the pan
Did that O-ring repair fix the massive oil consumption & poor fuel economy? I literally lost ¼ tank of fuel while power loss & limping home less than 1 mile lost ¼ tank of fuel
Thought i would add i have 424k miles on my 7.2. Changed my HPOP & injectors @ 415k full exhaust delete, cold air box, 6 gun tuner
Uaed to get 400 to a full tank now lucky if i get 200 miles.
How doni diagnose which side it is or should i just re ring them all? Also dont buy Amazon glow plugs they work 1x then they're done. Made that mistake already.

Orings fixed the oil consumption issue. Don’t think I had a poor fuel economy issue with this. If anything it should have been better since it was forcing the oil into the fuel tank through the filter. Check your fuel filter, if it’s black, oil is getting past the orings. Good luck!

I would notice a little bit of smoke once i a while, but not like you'd think. Most of the oil pushes back the fuel line through the filter and into the tank. That's what causes the fuel filter to be black. Once it mixes with the fuel, it doesn't smoke much when it burns.

    • @SakimasRidgeHomestead
      @SakimasRidgeHomestead  4 года назад +4

A little oil in the tubes is normal. The excessive oil I had was coming from the turbo. Bad o-rings will push the oil into the fuel system and cause the oil filter to be black. I was “lucky” enough to have both issues. Thanks for watching.

Any reason you took the belt off?
Did you torque down both bolts on the injector or just the one?
Is it normal for there to be oil in the inter cooler return pipe? Not much in mine, but a bit drained out once it sat after taking it off. If it is normal where does it come from and how to check that it is not excessive, or that a seal is going?
Other than hard start in cold weather mine is fine, but a bit of oil in the engine valley that keeps leaking down the back of the engine. I am in the process of replacing glow plugs, and after watching your video again, I am going to do the o rings since I have them. Replacing valve cover gaskets and wiring as well. I am hoping that will solve the hard, no start in cold weather when not plugged in. Anything below 40F or 8C and it is problematic. Anything else on top of the engine that I should check for oil leaks? I know HPOP is up there. Could be the IP sensor as well I imagine. Replaced turbo a few years ago, when seals and bushing went.

It sounds like you need to do a compression check and cylinder leakdown test. IDK where you live, but California is making fleets sell diesels that are older than 2010, so you can get good engines cheap. Those engines will usually go over half a million miles easy if you service them regular and use good oil. Lots of Tow Trucks have them.

It is a good possibility. I was loosing about a gallon every 100 miles. It could always be something more severe, but the o-rings is a good starting point. You should be able to see the bad o-ring when you take the injectors out.

Cracked injector can cause the issue as well.
