Glad someone else approves of the silliness! Lots of people I see are saying they aren't backing due to the silly stuff but I think it's done well and as you said "not in your face". Grim, serious, dark fantasy has been done already a ton and it's generic. Bring on the silly stuff!
It's a grim dark Egg Knight. He's an Egg Knight, and that's silly, but it's done in a serious way. "Peculiar" Perhaps is actually a better word for it.
I'm quite mixed about it. It's a jarring juxtaposition. The silliness seems to be part of KF's satirical take on the genre of dungeon crawlers/boss battlers. I like satire and wouldn't want full on grimdark. But I think it could be difficult to engage with a satirical game for hundreds of hours.
Think it's more surrealism maybe? Egg knight reminds me of onion knight in dark souls, initially made me chuckle in that game but then you start wondering what's he doing here and why on earth is his helmet shaped like that, is there a human under there or not?
@@Kiratze yeah definitely I hope there's some more detail on the other kingdom's they've talked about previously - think some of the most surreal bits are more in the barony in bloom rather than the principality of stone.
2 minutes in a 50 minute review seems okay :D The entire review is ideally quite detailed and in depth like that. I don't like to just quickly list an opinion and move on, I like to talk it though, explain why and what my reasoning was for it.
In the Quackalope gameplay i thought i could see where they wanted to go with the egg knight, with the rolling around hitting pillars and being hard to damage without losing armor. However with the many rules mistakes they only let the egg knight have 2 activations and therefore we didnt get to see much of how he functioned. Out of curiosity, how many activations did he get when you played against him? And how many did the Ironclad Dead get? And finally how many approximately did the bosses in AT:O get?
Harakiri, ,Zerywia, Malhya and kingdoms forlorn are on my short list. Think I've crossed off storm sunder, chronicles of drunagor and Oathsworn oh and Hexploreit.
I really don‘t know if I should get this or Stormsunder. Until now I lean slightly towards the latter. What would you prefer if you could only get one?
Great video, the best KF video i’ve seen so far. I’m a backer and i have also backed ET:O and i’m not worried about ET:O not being delibered yet… it’s not ITU fault it has been a global world problem… i’m also waiting for my copy of Oathsworn, Darkest Dungeon, Hel, Stormsunder, etc
I am glad and thankfull they added TTS demo, I was like all in before testing it, now im not going to be a backer at all. The game is totally overhelming with useless stuff, see no point in playing this game at all. Hope the TTS demo on kickstarter will be way more common.
It's hard to say as much has changed/been updated in AT:O since my prototype. For instance, the two windows for laying tokens down I mention here is apparently in AT:O now as well as late game it started to become unclear which tokens placed when without that structure in place.
Thanks for this review, although it makes me wonder again about backing it (as I'm already waiting for ATO). Would be so cool to have more detailed comparison to ATO.. and Stormsunder maybe?! 🙃😈
That's exactly how I felt, but I think they just trimmed the core game to be able to reveal stuff in SGs. They have already added quite a bit of stuff and I's only been 26 hrs... SO perhaps come back in a few days and see yourself. To me this was a marketing mistake, but lots of people (including myself) backed anyway, so I guess the final product might be actually a decent deal.
Yeah the SG strategy was not ideal. I've seen enough art and such from things to come to get in on it. Costs me nothing until 20 days from now anyway. If in 19 I feel it's not I can pull out then. Until then my pledge helps and allows me to follow along :)
@@TheKingofAverage Same here, I am not pledging if I am not interested at all. I see the potential of this project this why I pulled the trigger myself too.
Hey man nice preview I understand that you like the game but maybe you were looking for something better or I'm wrong? Any currently backing the core game
I've backed the game as well. I liked it quite a lot! I'm HUGE on streamlining stuff normally, so adding a small layer on top of what AT:O had, or a slight spin to me can sometimes feel unnecessary on a personal opinion level so that's probably what you're getting from that. They have asked numerous times for feedback and said they wanted to hear any thoughts I had on it. It's not one of those games where it's 100% done and they just throw it on KS so now is the time for feedback for sure :)
Great review! Wondering what are your thoughts between this game and Primal awakening. I’m a backer of AoT and quite tempted to get primal since KF shares some DNA with AoT. Both look spectacular tho
This kinda has dark souls vibe like the sun knight, it's silly but serious in a way, just like you refer to the eggknight [EDIT] I've put this before you mentioned in the video. I guess that's spot on.
They've said they'll have a true solo mode, but we were unable to play it in the demo so I can't comment on that. I did play it with 2 and it played fine for us as multihanding isn't a huge thing since you aren't playing lots of cards each round or something like that.
This one's not for me but still like listening to your thoughts on campaigns and games. Curious what your thoughts are on Darkest dungeons campaign and whether you were a backer?
Thanks for the preview review. I already have ato, oathsworn and tainted grail and still really not sure on artstyle. As I plenty of these games already I've backed for €1 (0.84 in real money 😉) in the first 24hrs as there seems to be no downside to it. Whatever i do i like what itu did with ato so I wish them well.
I might make a followup for those of us that already are getting AT:O. Pros and cons to that right? Quickly in comments the best I can describe the overall difference is this: In AT:O it feels large scale. Not just the titans and gods but the world map and that same world map spanning adventure/story. There is not a focus on character almost at all in the story as it's more focused on the politics, the geography, the cataclysms. In contrast KF is people focused. The map is a city/town only and you travel by foot. You have a personality and perhaps are chasing a person around. The stakes are importing and intriguing but you are not fighting God incarnate here :D As such it feels more personal. Another example is comic books. AT:O is cosmic level stuff. Silver Surfer, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. KF is street level. It's Daredevil, it's Spiderman. Spiderman isn't trying to stop the galaxy from being destroyed, he's just trying to save his girlfriend. Some will find both compelling, some one or the other. To me, that was truly the largest difference.
@@TheKingofAverage i think that would be helpful addition as it doesn't need to be a video and with some of these games being quite similar for what a normal backer can see but still a fairly big investment getting a chance to understand what a person is adding their collection is a good move.
Curious if you'd like it as much if you hadn't received a review copy. The KS suffers heavily from tell don't show imo. But I'm still in at 1€ to see how the end product turns out :P
The KS page is indeed not great and I disagree with hiding so much content day 1 as well. But I always review games separate from their KS campaign and separate from the company that made them which is why I can have a video titled CMON is EVIL and also give two CMON games my game of the year award :)
Wish I could say if I liked Aeon Trespass: Odyssey however they have not delivered yet, love your review thank you for all the information and excitement. By the way the Egg night reminds me of one of Iosefka's creations the Celestial Mob all grown up and ready to fight . Surprised at not hearing your comment on this of "making games and not campaign's" I am paraphrasing "make a game, deliver it, then make a new campaign for the people that liked your game with the hype of your delivered game" the statement on their Kickstarter that they have a no questions asked return policy does ease my mind.
I got turned off the game so much after seing those random encounter exploration cards. never played a game where those loose random bits made any sense and fun exploring. looks the same here…… unfortunately. rest looks promising. one question: does the map generated make sense or is random as well? i.e. is the end location always in the same direction or is that whatever?
It's random but slightly enforced. Each direction tells you what size card to use but there are options in those cards which causes the randomness. It can help them make a good world though, as say the boss card is an XL. Simply limiting which cards lead to an XL allows them some mild control over where the boss location will be, and they control your starting card too. Future missions could have you set up any number of tiles though I imagine. In this one it's just the starting card however.
I missed out on ATO so i'm pretty interested in this. I don't think its a game my group will like that much so I'd be playing it solo primarily. I'm undecided; the game looks super fiddly and setup time doesn't look great at a glance.
I really wish I could have tried the solo mode! I played with 2 people once just fine as the issue normally is managing card hands where you play many cards in one turn and that's not really done here, but everyone has their own limits to this sort of thing :)
Appreciate the informative video. It sounds like the game is similar enough to AT:O that I can pass on this one. It’s also unfortunate that they didn’t wait to deliver AT:O before running this Kickstarter. But I understand that business needs drive these types of decisions.
I was a little surprised to see this game on KS so early this year. Similarly to the delivery state of the prototype in comparison to ATO's Prelude. What are people's thoughts?
I'm confused how they're allowed to run a new campaign when not having delivered the previous one, given they haven't fulfilled 4 campaigns yet - KoA covered the changed rules here: ruclips.net/video/bmG0VFpEDd8/видео.html
Thanks for another great video! This was probably my favorite coverage I've seen from KF and, as I suspected, your experience with ATO would help acclimate you to KF more quickly. I'm sorry to hear that you don't care for the two window mechanic for the hard coop tokens as it now exists in ATO as well. As a beta tester, I was personally happy to see it implimented since there was a lot of confusion with when some of the mid-game tokens would take affect so doing that may seem like an unnecessary step in the early game but it definitely helps players keep this straight later on. Anyhow, as always, I'll be looking forward to your next video! Keep on being awesome
Ah interesting I didn't know you did that! You've been around long enough here to know I'm a bit heavy into liking things streamlined. However this would beat confusion around timing for sure. I'd first attempt to just remove that not accommodate, but again I lean pretty heavily in that direction. Really with KF and my time with it it was more trying to figure out which ones left vs stayed. Perhaps a visual cue on the token would help with that? I was just chatting about this with my patrons on discord around learning the game. While I didn't struggle here, I didn't with AT:O either. I am perhaps just more inclined to certain things than others as I didn't struggle with SK while I know others did and still do there as well. Give me a Euro and I'll probably seem real dumb though :D
@@TheKingofAverage I'm actually right there with you regarding streamlining (I love it so much!) and I factored that into a LOT of my ATO feedback but I also came to see how some complexity was unavoidable in certain areas with a game this deep (mechanically). Its kind of like the split between roll to hit and roll to wound. Some might say it would be easier to have a single roll but that one simplification would eliminate an exponential amount of mechanical possibly/variety. ITU wants the player to keep experiencing new mechanics and challenges as they progress in order to keep the game fresh/interesting over 5 Cycles of gameplay. So long story short, I still love me some streamlining but I've grudgingly accepted some of the "messiness" of ATO as a necessary evil lol.
The combat seems to be fiddly compared to KDM, a lot of moving components, tokens and the like in between each characters actions, is it as fiddly and cumbersome as it seems?
you should watch a good play through of ATO, this has an extra layer, but the system is pretty good i think. Also i like the extra mitigation this has over KDM
@@gasa5251 real talk! I really regret missing out on AT:O and am a big KDM fan so a game with some better mitigation sounds sweet but tossing up wether to back this or the reprint of oathsworn?!
While everyone has different limits to what they define as too fiddly, no I didn't find that or I'd have listed it :) If you can handle KDM you can certainly handle this :) To be honest, I find manipulation to be fiddly. Like dice manipulation, cards, etc. Overall you're playing perhaps 1 card, hitting, wounding, and laying a token or two down. That does not take much time and are all very basic actions on their own.
GREAT review... but I do feel to understand half the things KOA mentions, do watch this playthrough by Mike from One Stop Coop Shop. Then what he says makes MUCH more sense / is more easily understandable: ruclips.net/video/6oTOuvReZ38/видео.html (But maybe its just my inability to understand stuff without seeing the actual thing)
That's the exact reason why I'm assessing to cancel my pledge. If there was a standee version, I would go for it. But I don't want all these hight-art sculpts. They are weird, they are unnecessarily huge, they are hard to use in other games (DnD) and make the box needlessly huge...
Game is an odd one for me. I like grimdark and monty python. Didn’t want them together. Love the world art, not a fan of the card art. I only like half the minis and dislike the other half. I like the idea of co op working together to set each other up but find the powerup anime system generally stupid even in anime. After watching some other channels the mechanics seem underdeveloped but all the art and story seem polished. I like the multi kingdom idea…but I am only seeing 1 kingdom. They didn’t wait for their only other game to deliver so people would get a better sense of the company. But they are responsive. Game seems to have a ton of power up and gear potential, but from what little I saw its just stat increases. Easy pass for me. Stopped backing games I’m not excited for the entirety of.
100% smart move man. There's enough product out there and they're expensive enough to where if you have a good excuse to skip you should take it and not even sweat it.
I'm disappointed in the campaign page. Looks to have all the same flaws you went hard on Deep Rock Galactic for minus the IP. They tell me things that can happen during a session but zero traces of how to play the game. I can "make hard choices" and kill monsters, cool, but how? It's a nice flashy page but it certainly isn't trying to sell me the "game" portion of this game.
I think the reason is that the game is too big to fully explain on the KS page and quite honestly, ITU attempted to do that on their last KS campaign and it created a lot of problems for backers due to upfront information overload. In the usual ITU fashion, they'll be exploring more of the mechanics in the Updates as the campaign progresses and if you have Tabletop Simulator, there is a free demo of Kingdoms Forlorn. Also, both the prototype rulebook and storybooks are now available to read as well so that might help you find the details you're looking for.
@@Option1979 Oh I'm aware there are avenues that I can find more info. I was just commenting on my agreement with the stance KoA usually has with campaigns that do not explain their games. Go watch his last news video critiquing the Deep Rock Galactic campaign and all the same criticisms apply to Kingdoms Forlorn. A campaign page is a sales pitch, if you don't tell me how to play your game during the sales pitch, you're not pitching a game. You're pitching art and minis.
I've not taken a look beyond backing (since I've played the game already) - I'll have to look into that. Ideally agreed, they should have a basic mechanic overview that is longer than a single marketing sentence.
The rule book is linked on the Kickstarter, and also has a TTS demo, so I’m not really sure what you’re talking about. Or maybe I’m just missing the point
@@davec2724 Oh, I think I see your point. I have watched that video and I generally agree. Perhaps ITU went too far trying to explain everything in their first KS and overcorrected too far in the other direction for this KS.
any chance this company are going to ship anything to the backers of AO?....i think this company are shmeful by running other projects.whn nothing has been delivered on the fdirst one yet!..it will be close to 5 years late.by the time we get wave two...im a bit disappointed.in you showing this.before anything from AO has shipped.although you had a show a week or two back complaining about these kind of companies.
I think you're gone a bit over the top about the language and odd swear word, you have to realise that a lot of the world isn't as hung up on that as you Americans. There are enough games for families out there so let's leave the ones designed for us older people alone please.
It's not a major negative :) As the disclaimer says, not everything said is equal :) Most of my viewers however are American and from past experience, many of them have similar sensibilities as I do around this. I had my kids read their stories, since they are their character. This was fine, nothing bad in there at all. Then a random F Bomb out of the blue :D Some parents might be fine with their 12 year old dropping the f bomb with the family. I was not, so I mentioned it :D As always, make your own opinion, all I can do is share mine :)
@@TheKingofAverage Your 'f-bomb' is on the project's front page in some of the narrative, so if it's there I think it should be no surprise that it turns up in the odd paragraph of the actual game. Different strokes for different folks though, enough games to go around for all groups of people on this world and there are people who probably have never heard the term 'f-bomb' that will like this and not even blink at the language.
That harness got me 😂 Thank you, Scott, for 10 years ❤

@@benh4390 Definitely a lot that's surreal about the game for sure!
@@Kiratze yeah definitely I hope there's some more detail on the other kingdom's they've talked about previously - think some of the most surreal bits are more in the barony in bloom rather than the principality of stone.
that was a long eff bomb tangent
And finally how many approximately did the bosses in AT:O get?
who you think this game will be replacing ATO for you? and would like to hear your thoughts on this vs oathsworn!
Any updated thoughts based on the big fall update? I think the TTS version might even be updated with the new changes!
Would like to see a comparison between this and harakiri and which you would choose if you could only have one.
So....are you backing it?
Yes sir
Great video, the best KF video i’ve seen so far. I’m a backer and i have also backed ET:O and i’m not worried about ET:O not being delibered yet… it’s not ITU fault it has been a global world problem… i’m also waiting for my copy of Oathsworn, Darkest Dungeon, Hel, Stormsunder, etc
Yeah I already backed, I already am getting ATO and even though I don't have it yet, I can tell the group is passionate about the games they make.
I am glad and thankfull they added TTS demo, I was like all in before testing it, now im not going to be a backer at all. The game is totally overhelming with useless stuff, see no point in playing this game at all. Hope the TTS demo on kickstarter will be way more common.
Could you comment on the key combat differences between ATO and Kingdoms Forlorn (Clash), and which you prefer?
It's hard to say as much has changed/been updated in AT:O since my prototype. For instance, the two windows for laying tokens down I mention here is apparently in AT:O now as well as late game it started to become unclear which tokens placed when without that structure in place.
So what is the story reason for dying and then...umm...not dying? Sounds like you get to keep playing (after the fight) if you die.
Something about the fog being ever mysterious and those that died are found wandering back out of the fog alive but the worse for wear.
@The King of Average
Check out the new update! They are considering a unique standy add-on for every mob body part ;)
Also, mob numbers are now snap on base rings, so that makes this option easier then I’d anticipated
HECK YEAH! :D
Thanks for this review, although it makes me wonder again about backing it (as I'm already waiting for ATO). Would be so cool to have more detailed comparison to ATO.. and Stormsunder maybe?! 🙃😈
But the price on this one is huge... I get it's unique but am on the fence. Even compared to the zombicide the value is not there atm.
Omg it needs a huge space o the table
Thx for the great Review. I think i need to pledge... didnt we have the Deal you should safe me money😉?
Once I find out how to save some myself I'll let you know :D
Great review! Wondering what are your thoughts between this game and Primal awakening. I’m a backer of AoT and quite tempted to get primal since KF shares some DNA with AoT. Both look spectacular tho
Thanks for the video. Still waiting on ATO so its a pass plus missing the first 24hr awards irks me but makes my decision easier.
This kinda has dark souls vibe like the sun knight, it's silly but serious in a way, just like you refer to the eggknight [EDIT] I've put this before you mentioned in the video. I guess that's spot on.
Can this be played solo with one character? It's starting to sound like "no".
They have sworn that there is a solo mode, where you play one knight and the others are automated.
Good call. I am in the exact same boat, and I am very interested to see how this one plays out in development.
I might make a followup for those of us that already are getting AT:O. Pros and cons to that right? Quickly in comments the best I can describe the overall difference is this:
In AT:O it feels large scale.
I have just missed early bird 😅 So maybe...hard pass?
Haha oh no!
Thanks for the excellent review ! But I get a feeling that the final product will be a bit different, in a good way ! 👍
In this one it's just the starting card however.
thanks king! I really hope they nail that aspect and make it somewhat like AH LCG which is unreached in that aspect
You got the publisher name wrong in the description.
How so? It's by Into the Unknown :)
@@TheKingofAverage I think he means you wrote Unkown's , need another n there. Great video btw :)
Another luxurious boss battler, still waiting for a budget KDM experience.
so far Vagrantsong is the only one that offers this.
So long story short, I still love me some streamlining but I've grudgingly accepted some of the "messiness" of ATO as a necessary evil lol.
you‘re aware than aeon trespass still has not been delivered?
Yes sir :)
While everyone has different limits to what they define as too fiddly, no I didn't find that or I'd have listed it :) If you can handle KDM you can certainly handle this :)
To be honest, I find manipulation to be fiddly. Like dice manipulation, cards, etc. Overall you're playing perhaps 1 card, hitting, wounding, and laying a token or two down. That does not take much time and are all very basic actions on their own.
@@TheKingofAverage and with that sir they have another backer but really tossing up waiting for the oathsworn reprint or backing this 😅
GREAT review... but I do feel to understand half the things KOA mentions, do watch this playthrough by Mike from One Stop Coop Shop.
Then what he says makes MUCH more sense / is more easily understandable: ruclips.net/video/6oTOuvReZ38/видео.html
(But maybe its just my inability to understand stuff without seeing the actual thing)
This game sounds like it's made for me.. but.. All the enemy miniatures / designs are horrible and that's the only reason I will skip this.
Not sure if you have been following the updates, I find this company one of the best I have dealt with.
ATO is supposed to deliver in May-June. It's late, but they did a fantastic job on development and communication. They have my support !
Then a random F Bomb out of the blue :D
Some parents might be fine with their 12 year old dropping the f bomb with the family. I was not, so I mentioned it :D As always, make your own opinion, all I can do is share mine :)
@@TheKingofAverage I think there will be plenty of dark moments in the game you will feel unsuitable for young ones.

Sorry it's late! :)
@@TheKingofAverage no problem. Been waiting to hear your thoughts
