Thank you Dr for these stretches. My question is can we do these stretches with a subtle superior non displaced labral tear? I I am 41, play table tennis and had a mild on and off pain for last two years. I do not feel a lot of pain when I do this, but at the same time do not want to make the tear any worse. Please advise. Thanks
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different, but in general, if your doctor has cleared you to do stretches and exercises, they should be fine to do.
Hi Dr. Jo!Hope you're doing great. First off, thanks for the exercises, I'll start to do them every time after having come from a walk. I've been diagnosed with FAI, (with both cam and pincer conditions) and I've been told by my trauma that there are basically two options to "treat" this frustating pain: corticosteroid injections for temporal pain relief and the arthroscopy surgery, which seems to be the best option in the long term. But he said that I'm still too young to undergo a hip surgery and that I should give a chance to the anti-inflamatory treatment first. For me, however, it is just a matter of time to take the second option cause I know that the labrum of your hip may worsen in turn due to the frequent contact of the hip with these bony bumps when doing sports or some activities. I particularly was a sportman. But this happened to me, and I've been dealing with it for almost 3 and a half years. So, the question, do you believe that this exercise will help me to relieve my groin pain for good or it's merely to strenghten the muscles around my hip? If not, what should I do? Undergo the surgery or do the injections first?
Hello? I am a man living in Seoul, South Korea. At the university hospital, Hip joint CAM type was informed after surgery that if you cut more bones, you will get avascular ecosis of the femoral head, so you couldn't cut a lot. The doctor explained that pain after surgery should be lived like that for the rest of your life. Is this true?
Hi there doctorjo, I was recently diagnosed with a hip impingement (CAM). I’m 19 years old and I’m just wondering if you would recommend surgery or go non-surgical. Thanks

Hello, I am 49 yr old female with FAI CAM version, labrum tears. I'm in excruciating pain daily. Wanted to start stretching until I decide if surgery is my next step. If you have the labrum tears are exercises going to cause anymore damage (anymore than walking) which I have to do. Lol. Four back surgeries and I will say this FAI is a horrible existence. Looking for any helpful information you might could add. Thank you in advance. I'm now a subscriber.
You're welcome, and thanks! If you already have a tear, you really can't do a lot more damage besides normal wear and tear. Any kind of stretches and exercises will help even if you decide to have surgery. The stronger and more flexible you can be, the better your recovery will be afterwards. Good luck.
Hi Doctor Jo I take Requip for restless legs and I was wondering if it might interfere with trying to get flexible. I know it's a CNS medication and I don't know. Thank you in advance. 🙏😊🙏 Also take 75 mg pregabalin twice a day.
@@AskDoctorJo I didn't know one of the side effects of Requip was increased restless legs. I went from .5 mg a day to 3 mg a day. Now trying to stop has been brutal.
Oh no. Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, sometimes the side effects can be worse than what medications are for. I don't really know if that specifically is a side effect or not (I do believe weakness and joint pain are some of them), but if it's not helping, it's definitely worth discussing with your doctor about getting off it, and maybe trying to find out the specific cause (anemia, dehydration, an injury, etc.). Then you can focus on getting better.
@@AskDoctorJo Thanks dear. I think it's a combination of side effects one being insomnia. I honestly got about 2-3 hours of sleep each night. Trying to come off the medication has been difficult due to it causing increased restless legs. 🙁
I have pain doing anything that rotates my hip outward (butterfly stretch, or the stretch where you put your ankle on your knee). I can't even sit with my legs crossed because my left hip cannot support my leg. How do I do the exercises to help with this?
@@carterbv31 I ended up having a labral tear and pincer impingement diagnosed and surgery 6 months ago. I suggest finding an orthopedic specialist who will listen and order an mri to confirm. The surgery is no joke either. It’s a long recovery and I had 20 weeks of PT. I’m not doing everything “normally” yet but I’m better than I was before
It can be a deformity at the acetabulum or the femur, but that is not usually the problem, it is the result of the problem. These often form from imbalances causing rubbing because the joint is not moving how it's suppose to. If you can correct the imbalances with proper stretches and exercises, it no longer continues to cause damage.
Hi there, I really like this video and explanation. Well done. This is my first time watching one of your videos. I have had this FAI symptomotology for a while now. I’m certain I can do most of those stretches but the piriformis stretch might be hard. Do you have a modification recommendation?

If i have hip pinching when i walk should i limit walking untill symptoms go down? This hip pain started when i do hipflexor stretches wrong (i think that i stretched frontal part of hip capsule most) and now that extension is that what cause most pain..
Hello,' when I stand a spread my legs to the sides my left legs forms an angle at the hip. The right side does not as much and actually forces my torso to the left. it is more noticeable if I also bend forward at the waste. I'm not sure that makes sense? If this a sign of hip impingement
I have a hip impingement and mine is exactly the same I got diagnosed also might help - when I move said hip laterally it makes a quiet crunching sound doesn’t sound very pleasant
Hi Dr jo. When doing the figure 4 I have a hard time keeping my leg/ ankle on the bent leg. I think I have shocking flexibility. Is there a modified version. I did try doing sat on a chair but I could only feel it in my groin. So not sure if that is working as it should. Any modification appreciated. Thank you for sharing as always ❤

I have pain that starts in groin and ends in the right knee AFTER my runs. I know my right leg is longer than the other. First thought it was psoas (had that happen to the left leg) but now I think its inpingment or FAI. The pain goes away after about a week. Since then I've stopped running completely. Been doing these stretches and various other hip stretches/exercises for 2 months pain occured 3 months ago. I tried switching shoes, using orthotics, etc still painful. I hope I can run again someday 🥲🥺
I'm having trouble doing cross legged type positions bc of knee injuries & surgery - my hips are already tight but since injury it's worse. How can I stretch hips with limited knee flexion?
I am not sure what I have going on in my hip. I tried these stretches and exercises and immediately felt relief. I will of course go to the doctor to get an official diagnosis and plan of action but while I wait for that appointment a few days of these seem to help. Thank you.
5:42 that is me. It feels so painful and so tight and when I ambulate I am walking lop sided to counteract it. I'm trying to relax the muscles in the right leg but they are so tense. I even went to the pool and just relaxed in the hydrotherapy pool
Hey Dr. Jo ❤️ what about when the figure 4 stretch and butterfly stretch creates a pinch in the crease of the groin and hip on the inside of the leg? My X-ray says os acetabuli, not sure if that info helps. Hope to hear from you! ❤️
Thank you, I subscribed to your channel, I have FAI type CAM, I used a stationary bike but I felt pain, do you recommend to continue??? also I cant do most of your exercises although I am cleared for exercises
You're welcome, and thanks for subscribing. Sometimes you can adjust the seat higher, and it won't impinge as much, but generally if it's painful, it's probably worth trying something else.

Dr. Joe I was just diagnosed with this condition, except the neck of my femur is shorter then the other.
It's not between ball or socket.
Please help🙏
would you recommend a inversion table to relieve femoral nerve pain?
Started my first day today. Left hip has been bugging me since I nailed it on an embedded rock that I came down on all dirt biking. It's been two years, I feel my hip getting a little weaker, and starting to affect my lower back. I hope these exercises help. Thank you for the wonderful video.
You're welcome. Good luck!
Hows the hip?
That is the cutest royal puppydog ever!
🐾
I'll try...thanks Doc.😇
You're welcome.
What exercises the doctor advises for ischiofemoral conflict?
Thank you so much! These are incredible stretches
You're welcome!
@@AskDoctorJo thanks a lot doc.
Thanks for such helpful videos!
You're welcome, and thank you for your support!
Great exercises! Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks, and you're welcome!
Hey Dr. Jo, do you think an hip impingement can cause complete foot drop? Thanks,
Thank u so so much for this. This has helped me so much ! ❤
You're welcome. Glad they helped!
Good movemens
My back is too sore to turn over...
My bac hip impitcment alertted me!!
Does this work for sharp pain in hips? I have no mobility issues. Just sharp pain when walking on it.
Thank you very much doctor .
You're welcome.
Dr Jo, Is there any relation between tight groin and Si joint or glut pain? Thanks!
Yes, sometimes there is.
Exactly what I need!!!
Thanks
Brother what did u do?
Did it heal by excercise or u did surgery please reply.
@AskDoctorJo
Dear Mam,
I am from india i have lift hip joint saitica problem i run professionally but my running has been stopped for 3 months suggest me a solution
I was diagnosed cam morphology. Can i do these exercises?
Can you put videos how to do split with fai
Hello Dr. Joe, thank you so much for this very informative video. At the moment my hip is so painful that it hurts doing the musculation exercises. In that case would you recommend doing just the stretches for a few days/weeks before starting the musculation?
Thank you!
You're welcome! Yes, I would hold off on the things that hurt for a few days to see if you can get it calmed down some. Good luck.
Joe,
Have a small cam type of impingement about 58 deg. Also have sciatica from disk bulge. Will the exercises with the strap be ok with sciatica?
As long as it doesn't increase your symptoms, it should be okay.
Very good. I’m finally fixing my all my hip, knee and ankle problems so I can keep playing football at 37
Hey..sorry for the uncalled disturbance.
Pls i have complications with my hip flexors. And this is my 5th year. Am 19 now ...i have gone to different hospitals but no results ...i really need your view or ideas.... Social media would be very helpful ..for better communication....thanks i anticipate your response
How many days it will take to get relief from that pain Doctor jio ?
Can I discuss my problem of FAI with you over VC?
Im a subscriber! Is it okay for me to do these every day? Or is that bad for my FAI? Just wanting to get it better QUICK!
Thanks! Therapeutic exercises can be done every day.
thank you doctor.
You're welcome.
Just found your video, I've been bouncing from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what to do/not to do.. xray showed fai and i have almost no advice. Run/not run, etc.. I'll keep trying these to see if i get relief. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Hello,
I am 49 yr old female with FAI CAM version, labrum tears.
Good luck.
Thank You, Madam!
You're welcome!
I did the surgery on the right hip about but 10 moths ago. I'm now in much more pain. Are these excercises usefull for me?
@AskdocterJo
Hi Doctor Jo I take Requip for restless legs and I was wondering if it might interfere with trying to get flexible. I know it's a CNS medication and I don't know. Thank you in advance. 🙏😊🙏
Also take 75 mg pregabalin twice a day.
Thanks for being a channel member! Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you asking if a side effect of the medication is tight muscles?
@@AskDoctorJo Oh my thanks to you! Yes that is my question.
thank you so much doctor jo!
You're welcome!
I have pain doing anything that rotates my hip outward (butterfly stretch, or the stretch where you put your ankle on your knee). I can't even sit with my legs crossed because my left hip cannot support my leg. How do I do the exercises to help with this?
I have this exact same issue! Did you find anything out?
@@carterbv31 I ended up having a labral tear and pincer impingement diagnosed and surgery 6 months ago. I suggest finding an orthopedic specialist who will listen and order an mri to confirm. The surgery is no joke either. It’s a long recovery and I had 20 weeks of PT. I’m not doing everything “normally” yet but I’m better than I was before
@@Sunflowergirl145hi, I have the same issue. How’s your progress so far now? Is it a lot better and the pain is gone?
Hi what do I do if my hip is too sore to actually do any of this
how can you fix FAI when there is extra bone grew on the acetabular?
It can be a deformity at the acetabulum or the femur, but that is not usually the problem, it is the result of the problem. These often form from imbalances causing rubbing because the joint is not moving how it's suppose to. If you can correct the imbalances with proper stretches and exercises, it no longer continues to cause damage.
Hi there, I really like this video and explanation. Well done. This is my first time watching one of your videos. I have had this FAI symptomotology for a while now. I’m certain I can do most of those stretches but the piriformis stretch might be hard. Do you have a modification recommendation?
Thanks. There might be some modifications you can do in this video: ruclips.net/video/iqQDmakOvN8/видео.html Good luck.
Should this be done on the affected side or both sides ?
What pillow do you have there? It looks amazing and has ear holes!!
It's called the Womfy. You can find it here: www.amazon.com/dp/B01LFW5MCM/?cv_ct_id=amzn1.idea.3T67NEQCA2GKC&cv_ct_pg=storefront&cv_ct_wn=aip-storefront&ref=exp_cov_askdoctorjo_lv_dp_vv_d (affiliate link)
tiffany I was thinking the same. I want one!
Can I do these if I have a hip labrum tear?
Can I use a heavy loop resistance band?
Hello!
Please help, what is the name of the tool you use?
You can purchase a stretching strap like the one used in the video here: amzn.to/2WYujh5 (affiliate link)
I have a few videos for piriformis syndrome with different ways to stretch that area. You can find all my videos on my channel: ruclips.net/user/askdoctorjo, and you can use the search tool (the magnifying glass) under the banner on the right side to find specific videos/topics.
Hi Dr Jo, what kind of pillow are u using for this video? Thanks
The one I’m using is called the Womfy, but it’s no longer available. I have reviewed another pillow I really like from SleepOvation. You can learn more about it here: ruclips.net/video/v-Nq8qm7RQk/видео.html
I love you so much, your soul is very sweet and the exercises are really simple. I am from Egypt, and frankly, I do not understand the words, but I tried to imitate all the exercises, as you have done, exactly because I have femoral impingement syndrome. Understand the English, but with translation, we will make it easy Seriously, thank you very much 😍😍😍
You're welcome.
Doctor, I did the exercises in the video, just for the case of the FAI. Are there any other exercises that I can do, or only the one in the video?
Some of my other general hip strengthening videos might help. You can find them on my channel: ruclips.net/user/askdoctorjo
Doctor's last question I am currently diagnosed with FAi Also, with infections in the sacroiliac joint, is it possible to do the FAI exercise and at the same time do the normal sacroiliac joint exercises or will it have no effect? Thank you for your presence
Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you.
Hey 👋 I totally subscribed! I have a question: are we able to do the workouts everyday (I know the stretches are a go 👍) thank you
Thanks! Therapeutic exercises can be done every day.
You saved me 🙌
:-)
Is there a specific direction that's tighter? Hip flexors, external rotators, etc?
frog stretch
@@LakunaChoy what's that?
I am not sure what I have going on in my hip. I tried these stretches and exercises and immediately felt relief. I will of course go to the doctor to get an official diagnosis and plan of action but while I wait for that appointment a few days of these seem to help. Thank you.
You're welcome. I'm glad they gave you some relief.
Thank you so much for this video...you are truly helpful and amazing!🙌🏽😊
You're welcome, and thanks!
Stretches b4 exercises?
Thank you, I subscribed to your channel, I have FAI type CAM, I used a stationary bike but I felt pain, do you recommend to continue??? also I cant do most of your exercises although I am cleared for exercises
You're welcome, and thanks for subscribing. Sometimes you can adjust the seat higher, and it won't impinge as much, but generally if it's painful, it's probably worth trying something else.
Hi, Dr, Jo... Your videos are so helpful. i have severe protrusio acetabuli and tried to do the exercises but I also have osteoarthritis on hips and of both knees, sacroiliac, osteoarthritis and multilevel of DDD from L3 to S1 worst on the S1, on my back, Im just 50 years old and want to do exercises but frustrates me i cannot seat on butterfly position and other examples you gave
Thanks. Sorry to hear that. Many exercises can be modified specifically for you. If you can go see a physical therapist for an evaluation, they should be able to help with that.
