I just changed my major from nursing to social work and this video made me feel so much better about my choice, I’m super excited to be a social worker. Nursing made me feel so burnt out and I feel like I’ll be so much more comfortable in social work.
I'm so happy to hear the video helped you! and congrats! I also started out in nursing classes. I highly recommend finding a really good self-care routine for yourself so it can help to prevent burn out in social work, also😊 good luck with your social work journey✰
Bri Huizar hiii are you done with your study ?? Can you please help me ??
SukhReet Kaur hello, I am graduated :) I can try to help if you have a question!
Jaclyn what are the steps i have to take to become a social worker . I’m confused 🤷🏼♀️
@@sukhreetkaur5722 I would say the first step is to research some colleges / universities around you that offer bachelors of social work degrees. You can also go with psychology or other human service fields. Those are usually 4 years to get. Then, if you would like to go for a masters, that is a separate degree :) I hope this helps.
THANK YOU for bringing social work on RUclips back to life. This was so helpful!
I’m so glad it was helpful! And thank you for the kind words! 😊❤️
I think it's really awesome that you're putting all of this info out there for people potentially coming into this field. I'm fluttering between sociology and social work for a number of reasons and you really outlined a few things I couldn't find answers to! Thanks lady :) good luck in all your work and your journey!!
I'm so happy this helped! thank you 😊 and good luck to you as well!
I am starting my first semester in the social work program in a week. I am so nervous and excited at the same time! Your videos are very helpful :)
thank you for the kind words! I wish you all the best luck😊
You made me feel so much better about my internship! The way you described it sounds exactly how mine is going to be which makes me feel not so alone!
I am so happy to hear this helped!
Thank you for this. I am currently starting my journey to become a school social worker. I will continue to follow your video.
That is awesome, Congrats! and thank you so much for watching!
I’m going to be a junior in college in the fall and am planning to change my major to social work! Thank you for making this video and letting me know more about the field!
Congrats!! and thank you, I am so glad you liked the video:)
Thank you so much for this super informative video!
I graduate from a community college in May and I was so stuck between becoming a psychologist and a social worker. My heart is going more towards social work so I have been researching all month about it and I am definitely going to listen to my heart.
I'm still undecided on what school to choose next(I have two in mind) but either way, they're two great schools for social work so not too worried.
I really wanted to know more on what goes on, how the internships are like, ect. And ran into your videos. I instantly subscribed and will be binge watching later today lol thank you!!!
Aw thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words ❤️ I’m so happy to hear you followed your heart - I wish you all the best luck!
Hi Jaclyn! Sooo glad you decided to launch your channel. I have finally decided to launch my channel as well, it’s ALL things Social Work, and thought I would share as I am a recent MSW graduate and thought we could build community.
I too watch Jasmine Ana, and Social Work Scrapbook; they both are amazing and have truly inspired me to also rid some of the stigma surrounding Social Work, by sharing my academic and social work career journey!
I enjoyed your video and have subbed to your channel as well! All the best!!!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words:) I will definitely subscribe and I am excited for your addition into the social work RUclips community!
Awwwh Thanks, it’s been something I’ve worked on throughout my program. Sooo excited to finally be able to launch.
Awwwh thxs so much! Sooo excited to be able to finally launch 🚀

this was super helpful thank you
KJ and Tay I’m so glad you found it helpful!
The only thing with the internship is that once you do that internship that is all you can look for in a job unless you do something like a government job such as a caseworker for welfare benefits. If you change your mind you would be starting from the bottom of the bottom practically volunteering in many other sectors. I chose the I/DD population and now that I have changed my mind I do not make the requirements for many other sectors especially with them wanting years of experience. So either I go for my masters in that new sector or volunteer in that new sector that I want. It is pretty frustrating and they don't warn you that if you want to change over this will happen or you need years of experience to transfer over to another sector and convince them of how it is similar
Thank you for telling your experience! that must have been hard!
Hey! I loved this and I just started my RUclips channel! Im going to be talking all about social work and other things. Im currently getting my Bachelor's in Social Work
Jianna Martinez that’s amazing! ✨ just checked out your channel and first video and I’m excited for what you have to come!welcome to the social work RUclips community 😊
Thanks for your informative video. I am currently case manager with APD(AGING AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES) for state of Oregon, but I only have high-school diploma. I really want to get my MSW to learn more about social work and improve my skills. Is it worth going through all the schooling if I already have the job?
Hi! I think it all depends what you want to do in the future (and the area you live in). An MSW generally means more job opportunities, room for growth in careers, and more money. I would say for me, the expense of school is worth the long term value it can bring. Maybe think about where you want to go in the future and decide from there!
Omg. That is hard.. why do I want to go to social worker? 🤔
could someone tell me what needs to he done to apply? very confused by the: analysis of a social problem
Applying to get a BSW degree? I would recommend the first step being to find a college or online courses right for you. They should have a website / number to call to get info on applying to that specific program. Different Schools may have different applications and things needed. Just make sure it’s accredited!😊 hope this helped.
Also, make sure you really fight to get experience. I did not get much experience from my internship I was a glorified baby sitter for the I/DD population and they would not make the time to teach me the inner workings or casework. I had to fight to learn anything
totally agree - if you feel like you aren't getting the proper experience, us workers need to advocate for ourselves! i'm sorry that wasn't a great experience for you :(
my pleasure and thank you for the videos!
I'm starting in January at Limestone University for a bachelor in Social Work .I didn't had to do all that of writing a letter stating why you want to be a social worker etc etc . Maybe because I'm going in as an undergraduate .
Every program is different! this was just based on my experience :) congrats on starting school!!
@@JaclynMSW Question , Do you find the Social Work Bachelor classes are too hard or even difficult ? The closer and closer I get to my start date of January the 6th , I feel as if my anxiety goes up a notch , Yikes !
Bubble Gum That feeling is totally understandable! I had it too. I personally found that once I got into my program I loved the material so much it wasn’t hard to stay engaged in class and absorb the material. Based off my experience, the papers were time consuming sometimes but I didn’t find it to be difficult in terms of not knowing how to do it - it was just researching for papers and things like that! Everyone is so different but I hope that helps and I wish you all the best luck! Keep the good grades you receive for motivation and remind yourself why you love it 😊
What prerequisites classes did you have to take to get into the program?
My semester videos share more in depth info on that :)
Hi, Jaclyn would you recommend Brandman University for BA Social Work online? Thank You
Hello, I honestly haven’t looked into any other schools than the one I attend. When searching for a school / program I would just do a lot of research and confirm it is accredited!
Thank you, yes I will definitely look into it.
I am switching from education to social work . I’m in my third year and my dream is to become an elementary school social worker !
yay!! best of luck in your journey
Hi Jaclin
What else can I do other than volunteer to get in BSW program?
I would say after watching this video and hopefully getting some tips that way, looking and researching online can also help. I would suggest for someone in high school to keep good grades up. For someone older / out of high school, talk with the perspective schools you’re looking at and maybe they can help as well!
Super helpful video! I'm a high school senior wanting to pursue a social work career... The colleges I am applying to have psychology/sociology majors, but not a social work major. What is the difference here? And if I want to do social work should I be looking at schools that offer bsw?
Hello! I’m so glad you’re finding the videos helpful 😊 I would say if you’re looking at social work (great chocie🤗) to lean more towards that major. While sociology and psychology are similar, sociology focuses more on research and studies I think - whereas social work is more hands on direct work with people (there’s tons of pathways in SW). I found in my program a prerequisite is psychology and it’s discussed some in social work classes as parts of it are important to knowing how to work with people. I would also recommend speaking with an advisor at the schools you’re looking into and that department can give you insight into how they run.I hope this helped with your decision! ✨
@@JaclynMSW Ahh... So many of the colleges I am applying to have super strong masters programs for social work, but don't offer bachelors degrees... Wondering where you got your bsw? Thanks so much for the information, it has been very helpful!!
@@delacortekate I live in on the East Coast-New England so I stayed around here for college, There are definitely great schools out there!
This website seems to be a great and reliable source to search. You can filter by state so it will show you all the accredited programs available :)

@@JaclynMSW Thanks so much!!
What happens when the employee and intern boundaries cross? What do you do then?
When I was an employee and an intern, the agency I worked at prioritized the intern part - which I feel is important. Your school is tied to you being there so you should be able to go to your school for any issues that arise. I fortunately didn’t have a problem with boundaries crossing, it was just nice to get paid for my intern work! Hopefully this answered your question.
I got accepted into a BSW program as a third year student. I’m having a hard time choosing the non social work courses, any advise on what non social work courses to take?
congrats on getting accepted to your BSW program! personally, when I was choosing elective courses, I went with classes that I was interested in or would be good learning according to the population I wanted to work with. I recommend thinking about what directions or populations you are interested and choosing from there! either way, you will learn if you like the material or if it’s not for you. Hope this helps!
You could try cognitive neuroscience, psychology like abnormal. If you are into policy intro to public administration, if you are into clinical you can also take intro to healthcare management.
@@C3yl0 thank you, those are great options.

Thank you. Do u think SW is a secure career...i guess the growth rate is 13% which is great. Will the salary n job opportunities grow after 4-5 years?
Yes I do think it is secure! And will continue being a very necessary/needed field.
@@JaclynMSW that's great..thank you so much...umm..does the salary depends on the state or its actually 30-40k?
Yes I believe depends on state, the degree/license, the type of social work - a few factors!
@@JaclynMSW thank you so much..this means alot😊
How many recommendation letters?
every program could be different! If I remember correctly I think I had to have three.
Thank you so much for your video!! I am applying for the BSW Program at Portland State University in Oregon. I had some questions I was hoping you could answer now that you graduated! (: they are the following:
1. How was it managing all your academic classes while still doing the 16 hours a week for the internship? Any advice you would give me to succeed?
2. Can I get a good job just with my BSW or would I need to pursue my MSW in order to become a LCSW or something along those lines?
3. What types of jobs can I get with my BSW in a healthcare setting? I want to be a medical social worker, but I don’t know if I could get a job with my BSW?
Hi Erica, Congrats on starting your BSW journey!
1. It can be tough at times to manage classes, interning, working, life, etc. I recommend having a good support system you can talk to and hangout with. Self care was also very important to me. I gave myself boundaries and time managed so I can work but also have the night to relax and watch a tv show or something.
2. I think Whether to move on to getting an MSW is all about what your wanting to do with social work. If you do some research into the types of population or setting you want to be in and many of jobs require an MSW/license, then it may be worth it to go on. Generally it’s most likely you’d get paid more and have more job opportunities with an MSW.
3. I would definitely suggest doing some looking around on job search websites (indeed, Google, etc.) Depending in what state/location you want to work, check out job openings and see what they are looking for. Your school could also be helpful in giving you advice on this as well. BSW jobs are most likely to get you entry level jobs where as MSWs and beyond can allow you to practice more direct clinical work.
Hope this helps!
What school did you go to? I’m trying to find an online program for at least the first two years and would love some recommendations!
I attended a 4 year university in the new England area of the U.S but it wasn’t online - i would definitely be sure to make sure whichever program you choose is accredited! :)
@@JaclynMSW what is good accreditation for social work?
@@beautifullegends1223 Here is a website to find which programs are accredited - you can filter by state too :) www.cswe.org/Accreditation/Directory-of-Accredited-Programs.aspx
@@JaclynMSW thank you so much
I'm totally lost on what to do I was focused on nursing but then I switched to social work and was ready to transfer but now I'm lost on what to do. I'm stressed out.
Totally understand the feeling! I would think about all the details that go into each role like populations I want to work with and the type of day-to-day things I would be doing. Pros and cons list could also be helpful. Thankfully RUclips has tons of "day in the life's" and people discussing their experiences in careers.
There is also always medical/hospital social work so you still get to be in a hospital or medical setting doing social work!
@@JaclynMSW Thank you for your advice and I'm just lost I between which one would be better for me and my my life. I am at a stand still at what I want and I feel pressured to pick something and I don't have much time cus I have to choose the classes for social work righr now but I'm not sure if that's what I want to do but I will look into those videos. Tbh I'm worried about money as well growing up without much makes me want a career that pays me well and also doesnt take a huge toll on my mental health.
@@dallascowgirl105 Understandable! I have heard hospital social workers make good money and of course, it is also dependant on what state/area you work in but I hope you find the answers you are looking for!
@@JaclynMSW I live In Los Angeles, I just also hope if I do social work there is a demand for it and jobs available out here. Thank you for your response I appreciate your advice 😊
Hi im one of your new subscriber, what can you say about social work program its is hard ?
hello, thanks for subscribing! In my experience, the social work classes were my strengths and I enjoyed learning about it so although it’s still college and there is a lot of time that needs to go into it, I am passionate about it. This video gives more information and you can check out my other one “Information + Advice for Getting A Bachelor of Social Work Degree” along with other social work videos on this channel to get a feel of what it could be like for you. Every program is different but hope these help!
Hello jaclyn thank you for your time ❤️
How many hours of internship?
I had to do 16 hours a week in my program but other programs could be different!
Gawhgeousss
If someone has background in any other degree and is interested in going in social work, would the person have to do a BSc again or just go straight to Masters in social work?
Ahaka Abigail hello, I believe it is possible as I have heard some people with undergraduate psych degrees are able to obtain an MSW. I mostly hear of others getting their BSW first as I did but every accredited school could be different (whether online or in-person) so I recommend talking directly to someone in the MSW department of where you would like to go!
@@JaclynMSW Alright thank you so much

How much did you get paid at your jnternship ?
Just my state’s minimum wage. I wasn’t hired as someone with a degree because I had a different title which didn’t require one. When I graduated I stayed on as an employee and my wage increased to one with that title with a degree.
Clinicals?
my internship I think would be considered "clinicals" if that is what you are referring to, we just call them field hours or internship where I went.
Because Im not an smart person.
