God gives each of us gifts. Our gifts are not meant for us . It's meant to be shared with the people around us who's needs us. Some people are not cut out for social work. I've seen alot of videos where People say they had to leave the job due to stress. If your passion is to help people go for it . There s always going to be ups and downs and nothing will be perfect . But at the end of the day are you happy with what you've done .
This is great! Yes!! I've been on disability (for mental health) for the last 7 years, and I'm now going to be going back to college to become a clinical social worker (therapist)!! It's scary, but I'm excited!!
This video gave me a lot of confidence in the decision to pursue my BSW. I was hesitant at first considering I'm a very introverted, self sufficient person, but the gratification and enjoyment I get by talking to and empathizing with others led me in this direction. I'm hoping I can have some fulfillment once I get out there in the field!
At 57 years of age and about half the way of the nursing program, I’ve decided my life will be more meaningful if I become a social worker. Thank you for your words! You are an awesome young woman. Be well 🙏
I’ve struggled continuously with the decision to go with nursing or social work. I’m so indecisive and honestly feel obligated to finish nursing. How did you peacefully reach the decision to switch?
@@whitneyfranklin5434 Hey 👋🏾 what did you decide to do? I am a social worker and a nurse. Both professions are stressful but there is so much you can do with the degrees. Social work is very stressful and the pay is low. Nursing is stressful depending on what you do, but he pay is much better. I would definitely stick with nursing😁 I work as a nurse care coordinator and I absolutely love it! Social work burned me out so I went into nursing knowing exactly what I wanted to do.
How did you go into nursing? I feel like it’s too late to change my major but it’s human services so it’s in the same field I guess but I’m not sure what I should get my masters in
@@melissav9979 Omigosh this is my inner debate. Should I get my MSW or go into nursing? I’ve worked as a teacher for the past several years and love it and use to work in a DV shelter. I like helping people find resources and helping them through hard situations and I like that a Master’s comes with a lot of opportunities when nursing seems more narrow. Social work also seems easier to age into compare with nursing which seems very physical. I’m still unsure.
First video I've seen that calls the systems into question. The cards are stacked against social workers trying to do good for their communities because the systems don't even believe in the work. The systems are built to do the opposite of what social workers can achieve. It's like social workers exist in part to aid in the collateral damage dealt by the same systems that hire them. I don't think systems want social work to exist, it's an after thought. It should be a point of entry to be preventative to harm, not reactive.
I have started a diploma of community services and will then get a bachelor of social work. I have always had an interest in human psychology and was accepted to study a Bachelor of psychology but went on to do other things. Finally after 20 years I’m following my path and it’s been hard but I love it.
I'm late to the party, but I just found your channel. I'm a psych major and am honestly wanting to get my MA in social work. After learning how much of a better impact I can make on a persons life I feel it'll feel much more rewarding. I am currently working in an impoverished area, and yes people hear the city name and automatically assume ghetto, dangerous, bad. But working here two years, I've seen gems amongst the "muck" and it makes me wish I could provide back to them. There are so many good people here who just do not have the resources. Thank you for solidifying my choice in pursuing my MSW :)
I always wanted to become a social worker since elementary school. I’m going for my bachelor this year, this video really continuously keeps me motivated. Now I know I’m not alone. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you for this! I’ve been back and forth between nursing and social work and this video is helping push me in the direction I feel like I belong in. Social work! At this point in life the only reason I’d finish nursing is because I feel obligated. I don’t want to be that nurse who hates her job.
So interesting to hear that because this has been my main mental concern lately , so if you don't mind may I ask what you don't like about nursing or any other thing or advice that you like to add is highly appreciated 👍🙏❤

💯 percent correct. When the reality is, you can't. The beautiful thing about being a social worker though is you are right times are changing and the skills that you learn as a social worker are incredibly valuable and transferable to so many other areas. This was really informative and gave me a valuable perspective. Starting MSW program this Fall. As someone who does not have a background in social work (career change), I find your subjects thought-provoking and really helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hi beyoncesays1 congratulations! I am currently applying to MSW programs. I also don't have a background in Social Work and going through a career change. If you don't mind me asking was it hard getting into programs with no Social Work experience on your resume?
Tiffany Colon Hi Tiffany. Congrats on the new career move!! We’re not alone :) - actually very common as I learned during group interviews. When I was in the middle of the application process, I got really worried when I discovered I had to submit a resume...because my work experience is completely unrelated. But my mentor- with MSW who taught at Columbia University & New York University- encouraged and advised me to outline a resume that highlights volunteer experience and alternatives that are related. For example, if you were really involved in your church community (if you attend) or just really involved in your community, that’s worthy of highlighting. Or if you have children or anyone in your life is elderly or disabled and relies on you, that is worthy of highlighting. Also any causes that you’ve committed yourself to, or have offered your help to such as community organizing (even on the smallest scale- it’s never considered too small) or even baby-sitting. During interview process, I met other applicants like me who were transitioning too. The advantage we have is our life experience. Social Work requires self-awareness & true commitment. School administrators are also looking for your capacity to self-reflect and adjust your sails to the winds. Sometimes it’s age and life experience that gives you that. I hope this helps.
@@MahoganyBorn Thanks for this reply. I am doing all kinds of research on MSW and I'm turning 40 this year and while I've had plenty of work experience, I don't have anything really in volunteering or social work. Gabby, Thank you for such an amazing and clarifying video. I am a 2nd-year graduate student working on finding my school social work internship, it is very competitive. I am hoping this week things will improve. I am creative, positive, and always willing to learn and grow more to become a better human every day. I have to work to help support my family and I feel as if Social Work is a career that I can stay in until retirement. I might want to have my own practice someday, and I love having animals participate when groups are being facilitated. I also love art and music, so I will find creative ways to inspire people too and help them persevere as well. I love how you pointed out that some rich people don't have a community of friends. That is so true, sometimes friends are more important than family. Thank you again for your video.
I appreciate your video and input. You always hear all the negatives and I see so many videos of folks explaining why they quit or regret social work, however I do not feel deterred. Thank you for reaffirming this for me.
Thank you for your videos! I'm thinking in studying social work and I haven't found a lot of people who do videos about it that are really complete. Your perspective and opinions are really helpful, keep up with it! ❤❤❤
I have always been really sure of the fact that I wanna do social work within the school system because I have indeed always been a very caring and thoughtful person who definitely loves being there for other people BUT since I have been in college, I haven’t done very well academically and have also struggled to find the motivation for studying in my social work classes. Recently I have been wondering a lot about if social work is really the right path for me due to my lack of motivation for doing well academically and getting to where I wanna be. I also struggle a lot with depression so it has been kinda confusing because I’m not exactly sure if the reason behind me being such a poor performing student is because social work isn’t really the right path for me or because I just need to get better help for my depression 😬
i see what you mean. depression can really impact how you engage in life and academics. I hope this video gave you a bit more clarity. And I am praying for your healing.
Thank you for keeping it 💯. You are passionate & authentic. This is the best info about this field on RUclips. Thanks for the wealth of info you provide.
Thank you for this video. It was really helpful! I've been a special education teacher for a few years, but what I loved most was working with kids with emotional and behavior disorders. Teaching math and language arts and providing academic accommodations/interventions wasn't the highlight, but was a majority of the job. I'm looking to pivot careers, and I think becoming a school social worker is what I want to do. i'm looking into MSW programs right now. While I know it will be a journey to get my degree, I think I will find so much joy in it.
@ Kelsey Bigger this is me, I’ve just completed my Master’s of Ed, going into my third year of teaching special education and wish I would have gone the social work route. I know I want to work with teens, but not in schools. Hope everything works out!
Great topic and video🙌🏽. I also will say that you need to know how to navigate someone from point A to Z in direct practice and take care of yourself as compassion fatigue can lead to burnout. Have a balance. Every good counselor has a good counselor, friend, or healthy filter to speak with, especially if you feel overwhelmed with everyone else's stuff(problems, your administration duties, personal life , job deadlines numbers quota etc...)💯💯
Yes! 🎯 Compassion fatigue is what I’d be concerned with…that and concern for my physical safety, as there have been many social workers who have been physically attacked (and worse).
Thank you so much for your perspective! It sincerely is helping and encouraging me to pursue a MSW. This was super informative and extremely valuable. 🙏
Thank you for sharing this video! I have always wanted to know the details of the social work field. I have a strong passion to help and serve the community for the better and love helping children.
ur locs are beautiful omg but i want to THANK U so so much for this informative video! im only in high school determining my career choices and this helped me out a ton
OMG lady your videos are so inspiring and educational to me as someone who want to be a social worker with “some what doubts” but you’re videos are very helpful to me in so many ways that I can’t even explain. Though I’ve always and still want a Ph.D but I am putting it aside and focus on my most wanted thing which is helping ppl through social work. Thank you so so so very much ❤❤❤
God gave us unique gifts but its limited and cannot grow too far in showing his magnifying Glory this field. I knew SW was going to be difficult but I question how the system tbh. Love the passion to help people but helping people does not always have to be social work
I like your videos Mrs..i see you from Texas..i like how you care about people and advice others of what it takes to be a social worker,,people you should love that field..and love their patients once they are working on this..
Gabs i have a nice topic that you might have touched on before. Letting go of a lot of material things that don't really matter. Enjoy your life because most of the time you'll never get back what you paid for that stuff.
Reg Vibe hello Reg! I hope you are well. I really like that topic. Like minimalism? And the spiritual element of it. I wanna start doing a video series around being more socially conscious. That would fall well under that. I’m going to add this idea to that !
@@MindyourSociety that sounds wonderful and yes freeing your mind mentally and spiritually from things and also people who hinder you. Can't wait to watch it. Enjoy your day sis!!
I think I have a lot of important qualities you mentioned like perseverance, creativity open-mindedness, empathy etc but I am worried I don't have the social skills necessary to know how to handle difficult or awkward situations with people where what you say and how you say it can really affect them. I realise this is a skill I can develop over time but it makes me question whether I have the self belief to actually pursue a career this socially challenging
I’m an LMSW and I’ve been in the field of HIV for 2 years. I’m getting ready to leave realizing that its not for me, at least the mental hea;th counseling.
I want to be a Social Worker, but I am not the most social person in the world/ I am a good listener, but not a good talker. I really enjoyed the video. I am just not sure if Social Work is for me. I am a caregiver, which sometimes makes me last for care. Another issue is I don't drive.
Back in college, I wish I had made a better choice. Back in the early 1990's, I tried to be a mental health social worker. I didn't do it very well. I hated it and left the field quickly.
I like your style. My counselor never smiles until end of the session. I feel more like a case study than a client getting help. My counselor never admitted they could not help me/us. My husband still want to look pretty like you after all those sessions we went to. And I still want to wear the pants. We need help. Please make video on counselors stepping up to admit when they dont have the skill to help someone. Thanks
At college I got into strenght based perspective and it helped me in personal life also. It gets hella difficult when I meet deeply pesimistic client who seems to want to continue in selfloathing and pessimism and is unable to see any positives.
Hi! new subscriber here, I loved this video and your perspective. I am currently getting my BSW and I have been getting nervous because I am starting my internship in the fall but this video made me really realize that social work is for me! It is very nerve racking but I am so excited

Let your ❤️ lead the way, but choose social work over teaching 😆. If you can before you invest too much cash & time try to shadow people in both fields to see the difference.
I've adopted the madea approach to social work. I really dislike children but I love my job. I love to help kids. I love to see them becoming better adults.
The mention that people who are on the street and seem broke, might be part of the supportive community and that things are not as black and white as they seem hopefully made my mind switch back to a more grateful and optimistic mindset.
Hi, if you don’t mind me asking how did you become a cj social worker? I haven’t seen that before but it interests me as I am currently majoring in cj & want to pursue social work
Thank you for mentioning about social entreprenurship. I went from social service to accounting and commerce and I noticed the same things you have mentioned. Thank you! I am glad I am not the only one that thinks on giving back in different ways. Good that the curriculum is changing as well
Thank you for this video! Can you (or anyone who sees this) please suggest a good online program for BSW? I would really appreciate that. I’m overwhelmed by all the online schools and I don’t know which route to go!
I thought you were going to talk about the difference between BSW, MSW, And social work itself, I was wondering if it has differences rather than advanced education
What was your GPA for your BS in Psychology? What was your GPA in MSW program? I'm looking into social work? I don't know if I'm smart enough to complete both programs. Any advice would help.
I followed every word of your advice and my college took away my bachelor's degree and they sent 5 large men to continuously kick me in the ribs for SEVEN HOURS!!!!! I'm never watching one of your videos AGAIN!!!!!!

Thank you so much for your perspective! It sincerely is helping and encouraging me to pursue a MSW. This was super informative and extremely valuable. 🙏
I want to be a social worker, however I don’t want to get my masters but the salary of just having a bachelor is not great😩
Thank you for sharing this video!
Thank you so so so very much ❤❤❤
thank you for your videos, they are really insightful and helpful in deciding my future career!🥰
Very well thought and realistic perspective on social work, thank you.
Thanks for sharing....I think I'm liking this social works thingy and you're making it sound interesting 😊
These videos have been INCREDIBLY helpful!!!
Thank you so so much! I am happy to hear.
girl ur makeup looks soooo good u ate this one up fr. much love
There is no one personality of a social worker. Now thats going to stick with me. Thank you 💖
God gave us unique gifts but its limited and cannot grow too far in showing his magnifying Glory this field. I knew SW was going to be difficult but I question how the system tbh. Love the passion to help people but helping people does not always have to be social work
You are spot on! You don’t have to be a social worker to help people.
Alleluia!!!
What other options do I have if I have the passion to help people ?
I’m so glad your channel has grown since I subscribed. You are beneficial to our field
I love your content! I’ve been contemplating to go into social work
I like your videos Mrs..i see you from Texas..i like how you care about people and advice others of what it takes to be a social worker,,people you should love that field..and love their patients once they are working on this..
Whatever you mentioned is very accurate and on point, we will take it to consideration
I am a psychiatric nurse and I’m exploring the idea of getting a msw. I have an interest in public health
You should check out MSW/MPH program at USC (if your in California). Also, there are other dual master's programs online as well.
You are inspiring. This video is helpful!
Your videos are always so insightful. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
As a new QMHP, I'm very happy to have ran into your channel. THANK YOU ‼
You are welcome! Happy to have you here.
@@MindyourSociety 😏🙏🏽
Back in college, I wish I had made a better choice. Back in the early 1990's, I tried to be a mental health social worker. I didn't do it very well. I hated it and left the field quickly.
I like your style. My counselor never smiles until end of the session. I feel more like a case study than a client getting help. My counselor never admitted they could not help me/us. My husband still want to look pretty like you after all those sessions we went to. And I still want to wear the pants. We need help. Please make video on counselors stepping up to admit when they dont have the skill to help someone. Thanks
Thanks for doing this video. You shared some great advice and things that I wouldn't have thought about on my own.
This was helpful and I see why I’m also so connected to social work.
At college I got into strenght based perspective and it helped me in personal life also. It gets hella difficult when I meet deeply pesimistic client who seems to want to continue in selfloathing and pessimism and is unable to see any positives.
Thank you so much for this! I needed this information
Thank you so much for your insight into social work! I definitely feel motivated to pursue this career.
Hi! new subscriber here, I loved this video and your perspective. I am currently getting my BSW and I have been getting nervous because I am starting my internship in the fall but this video made me really realize that social work is for me! It is very nerve racking but I am so excited
im a sociology major who wanted to go the law school route but now im thinking about social work. only thing i remembered when i graduated is that none of my fellow college soc grads were going into social work.
I love this video ! ❤️❤️ god bless you , thank you very much !😍😍😍
Great 👍 social worker is a game changer acting at time of hardships and at the normal time of human life.
Thank you for this! Trying to decide between social work and teaching. 😩
You are welcome! I hope this video helps you a bit.
Let your ❤️ lead the way, but choose social work over teaching 😆. If you can before you invest too much cash & time try to shadow people in both fields to see the difference.
This is my current problem
If you’re an extrovert teaching is great. Otherwise it is an absolute nightmare.
Thank you very much for this, I'm about to start!!!
I've adopted the madea approach to social work. I really dislike children but I love my job. I love to help kids. I love to see them becoming better adults.
Wait you really dislike children but love your job???? Weird AF statement!!
I needed to see this video. This was an AWESOME video. I am looking into corporate social work. I wonder if this is the same thing as Human Resources?
thank you for sharing! It motivates me a lot to look into becoming a social worker in the USA
I’m a chef and a father and feel so called to help kids I feel it in my soul
Well-rounded introduction. Thank you.
I’m applying to college right now and this video was so helpful !!!
you made some really good points! would love to chat more about this with you if you have time!
Thank you for making this video!
The mention that people who are on the street and seem broke, might be part of the supportive community and that things are not as black and white as they seem hopefully made my mind switch back to a more grateful and optimistic mindset.
Wow!!! Thank you so much for this video!
You are welcome !
I could not love your content more! The idea that being in social services is all about being self sacrificing is really silly
Very informative thank you!
Can you please do a video about guidance counseling vs social work
I don’t know too much about a career of a guidance counseler unfortunately
I am loving your content! Thank you for these videos
You are welcome!
Very well elaborated. I'm a criminal justice social worker
Thank you !
Good that the curriculum is changing as well
Same! I am pursing my MBA right now, just got my MSW
Thank you for this video! Can you (or anyone who sees this) please suggest a good online program for BSW? I would really appreciate that. I’m overwhelmed by all the online schools and I don’t know which route to go!
I’d like to know as well!
Such a good video!! Awesome points
Her skin is so pretty and glowy
Thank you for this video, very helpful and insightful🙃!~
you are welcome!
Bro, I have this tough doubt , should I major in English, nursing , dietitian or social work ?
I thought you were going to talk about the difference between BSW, MSW, And social work itself, I was wondering if it has differences rather than advanced education
What was your GPA for your BS in Psychology? What was your GPA in MSW program? I'm looking into social work? I don't know if I'm smart enough to complete both programs. Any advice would help.
Anyone can be successful through college with hard work and dedication, especially in an area you’re passionate in.
very inspiring message and tips...
I followed every word of your advice and my college took away my bachelor's degree and they sent 5 large men to continuously kick me in the ribs for SEVEN HOURS!!!!! I'm never watching one of your videos AGAIN!!!!!!
.....what?
I like psychology can i major in psychology and do social work ? What would be best in social work with a psychology degree?
girl, what’s your Myers Briggs type?
Great video, really helpful!
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you please tell me...does one get the opportunity to learn how to do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or EMDR while studying a Masters in Social Work?
Randa Palfy yes you can! If you take the clinical social work route :)
Mind your Society Thanks!🙂
