It is truly refreshing to see a woman of color, pursuing macro social work, AND educating others on social media platforms such as this. Thank you for taking the time to create content! I am in my final semester of my BSW undergrad and I plan to pursue my MSW with a focus on international, community organizing, policy, or non-profit management. What is your alma mater? Also, I appreciate how you mentioned the extra work it may take to figure what what direction you want to go in after graduate school. My challenge currently is deciding what specific type of macro I want to focus on during my MSW, since I have so many interests. I know it's all macro, however, certain schools offer different specializations within macro/different programs under the macro umbrella. I think I'm leaning primarily toward community organizing and international, however, I wanted to know if you had any advice for someone with aloooot of interests.
This is long-winded but I sincerely appreciated your video.

Thank you for the comment! I had a very hard time finding information on social media regarding macro social work, so i figured id add to the conversation. I graduated from the University of Illinois :) I am also someone who has a lot of interest! SO i understand. My advice would be, understand that just because you focus in one area doesn't mean you are locked into that area. Once you graduate, jobs really don't care what your focus area was. So choose a focus you are interested in today, and move around to different roles as your passions change! I have done so much; taught abroad in korea, worked at non profits, worked in corporate, government, did community organizing, teaching, grantmaking, etc. So you can do it too!

GREAT VIDEO! My mom is a direct practice social worker. I'm a senior in college and social work is part of my interdisciplinary studies degree, along with social sciences, and education. I have been cautious of my interest in social work because I have assumed that it only opens doors for counseling and mental health jobs. I have become really interested in economics and the structural elements involved in poverty, crime, homelessness, housing, etc. Studying social work is what exposed me to these topics and I am glad that there is a whole subgroup of social workers who are interested in the practicality of solving these social issues by understanding systems, policies, etc, and who are not interested in direct one-on-one counseling. Like you said, my brain just doesn't work that way but I am happy to be a social worker with a more analytical mind who has a great interest in these issues, from a logistical, economic lens, rather than a "compassionate", caring, therapist lens, which is what I initially thought was the entirety of the field of social work upon starting college four years ago. Macro social workers are powerful community forces because of their understanding of the big picture!

Thank you so much for posting this! Despite being the archetypal future social worker, I surprisingly don't have a background in social work. After volunteering with the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, I found myself as an intensive case management caseworker for a refugee resettlement agency. My current interns are all MSW students and I really feel as though I should pursue an MSW as well, but I was under the impression that all social workers did direct service whereas I was more interested in programming and support for people working in direct service. After watching your video, I'm now well aware that macro social work is the option for me :) Keep rocking it, you're fantastic

Thanks for sharing, i just watched your video of craving a niche for oneself in the social work profession and I had to check out most of your videos👍. In Nigeria 🇳🇬 were I am from and live presently, macro social work is not a specialization on its own, it is a course we took in year 1 of MSW🤦‍♀️. Most times I watch social workers video like yourself to have an understanding of how it is in other countries. Even with my MSW degree, travelling out of Nigeria means I still have to do some courses before I can start practicing.

However, after doing some digging, I'm still not fully aware of what those jobs/careers are and how to find them. After providing a description of what you do in your work, I realized that your career position would be perfect for me. Hello,
I've recently been looking into macro social work as a career path. I'm currently majoring in psychology right now but I plan to apply towards an MSW in the future. Are there macro social work jobs that focus specifically on community outreach, awareness or things like fundraising/researching donors or sponsors? I've done an internship with a nonprofit organization that assisted individuals with Parkinson's disease where I've done things similar to the things listed above, but I wasn't sure if it would be 100% applicable to macro social work (as it might have leaned more towards marketing I think).
