Cymbals usually need something heavier to sound good at distance. Light, yarny mallets might sound good up close, but you just get a hissy sound at best when far away. Metal doesn't move as easily as rosewood. Hence why vibraphone mallets are usually heavier than marimba mallets. Though the recent trend for heavier marimba mallets has made this harder to notice.
I also play trumpet, but I dabble in piano, and the notes basically transfer to the mallets, so I can sorta play them. Just not as well as trumpet. Hell, I barely play trumpet well.
I have a 4.3 and it fits well. It takes up half of my room, but that is fine. Like I have a matrace, marimba and very small desk ( normally learn in a public space anyway), and overhead cabinets. Priorities I guess. The big thing for me actually was the price, even tho, I bought a very cheap 2.5k Euro Adams Marimba.
Appreciate the review! I just put together my new 4.3 Octave Marimba One Educational Series Practice Marimba and live in a second-story apartment with a roommate. I have a tendency to practice and arrange music at night, so these are perfect for those late-night sessions. Hopefully, in the 4 years since this video was posted, the shafts have been improved lol.
I bought a pair of these (the super soft) ones to play on a Xylosynth. I thought that these mallets would allow me the ability to play the XS without the loud contact noise from hitting the keys with regular mallets. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. The Xsynth likes harder mallets and didn’t register the notes. I have a rosewood Adams Soloist 4.3 as well As the XS and they’re great for practicing on Soloist! Just not the digital mallet percussion surface.
These mallets also seem like a great for those who march drum corps or WGI type events. As a member of a percussion studio that doesn’t own a synthetic marimba, I always feel guilty practicing drum corps technique on a rosewood keyboard because I don’t want to damage the bars. Will be buying these soon and very excited to practice without guilt!
It's a good idea for practicing and those late-night inspirational ideas. Thanks for giving those a try Adam. What we used to do for one of our marimba rooms in college was put thin cloths over the resonators to dampen the sound which gave similar results to the practice mallets you demonstrated. Unfortunately, we had to do this since the marimba sound would bleed into our instructor's office and would be a distraction during lessons. It was the only place we could keep it, but we worked with what we had and got our practice hours done. On the positive side, we were able to use regular mallets for real feel playing but with a dampened sound. Thanks for all that you do man, I really enjoy your channel! 👍
Leigh showed these off at a seminar in Indiana in June, thought they were pretty cool. We actually had the option to buy them a couple months before they technically hit the shelves.
So Adam, a year later, have these mallets held up pretty well? Have you been using them as much as you thought you would? (I found this after getting some suggestions for ways to not scare neighbors with the new Mode 5 I'ma get in 3-4 months!!) Update: After getting a banging on my door from a less-than-happy neighbor, I ended up using my Late Nite's for most of my practice time. Definitely a good buy!
Hey Adam! I'm playing Libertango by Eric Sammut for competition this year, and I just think it would be cool to hear you play it. Would you be willing to learn it and possibly make a video of you playing it? I would love to hear your take on it!
I really want those, but I get them for 120 Euros (=127 USD) for a set of 4, which is just outrageous. Sooo, I wrapped some myself today. Just one sliced up kitchen sponge, some roundwood (sadly just some random, but at least hight quality wood) and wool. It went really well for my first wrap. I might do a second attempt soon, but ill have to get some rattan handles and I think I will put in some weights.

If I buy these will my teacher hear when I hack
These are probably crazy good suspended cymbal mallets haha
... I totally didn't think of that, you are a genius! 😅
I actually wanna hear those on timpani!
I was thinking the exact same thing!

I love the idea of practice mallets but I wish that they made realistic practice marimbas
I think brands like Demorrow actually do, but the price is so close to a real instrument it's not really worth it haha
Someone needs to make silent xylophone mallets now 😂😵
Well, you could just use these on xylophone haha
I actually used some the other day. They just use soft plastic heads. So you can kinda hear the tone but jone of the xylophone ping.
Innovative has a couple pairs of them.
I think you can just use soft marimba mallets because they aren’t hard enough to produce sound from the keys
Why am I watching this? I play trumpet🤔
I also play trumpet, but I dabble in piano, and the notes basically transfer to the mallets, so I can sorta play them. Just not as well as trumpet. Hell, I barely play trumpet well.
Yeah I play flute so...
Yeah I play the sax so,

Hey, people do it.
