    I also wish someone had explained to me chords and how basic harmony works. It's not until I stopped having lessons (10+ years as a child), that I started to figure out. There was no internet, it wasn't that easy to get information if you didn't have a teacher who was willing to show you (like with most teachers, I only played classical, from sheet music). The one thing I would add is that although I absolutely thought I would make it a priority to show my daughter from the very start how to form chords and improvise,, and not bother with sheet music (she would have learnt with a teacher anyway), I underestimated the amount of musical instinct and vocabulary that it takes to get a result that is remotely interesting, with your own arrangement or improvising. I realised that what comes to me naturally is the result of years of being exposed to music, different styles, having played a lot through the years. I realise that falling back on solid sheet music, at this stage (beginner), is actually more rewarding, as the result they get by learning a song or tune in a traditional way will be more impressive (even though it's a slow process, and it gets boring to always play the same thing).

    You just described my music learning journey of organ beginning at the age of 8 or 9, 50+ years ago, ouch! I participated in my first solo organ contest at the age of 11 and took first place. Your initial points really hit home. I took a very long break from playing but it is an essential part of my life once again. I really want to learn how to just be creative and learn the techniques to make me successful without having to pull out my sheet music. I am currently playing a electronic keyboard so I have had to train myself the transition from organ to piano. I just came upon your videos this week and find your method of teaching really seems to appeal to me. Thank you for sharing your gift of music and teaching.

    What you suggested is actually on the textbooks (I and II), which is targeted for the first and second year non-piano major students in the music department. It has an overwhelming 24 major/minor scales, chords, chord progression, improvision, etc.

    I think my biggest mistake is forgetting my “why” and getting in a slump. I’m actually going to combine a couple of your points and set my “why” as an outlet to relax and enjoy myself by creating a warm setting, pouring a drink, and learning a popular music song that I really enjoy (at least during the slump times). Great tips!

    Thanks a lot! It’s nice to hear a person who understands life and balance, while striving to get better. I haven’t practiced in about three months, and this helped me decide to get back into it. I’m 62 and had a couple of years of piano when I was young. Surprisingly, I remembered all the scales and chords I learned, as well as the basics of reading sheet music. I picked up a lot of piano books, including the one you recommended. I got them on Kindle, so I wouldn’t have to get up to find them. I also got a lifetime subscription to Playground Sessions, which has really helped me a lot. Not an ad, but I do recommend it (but wait until it goes on sale, for like $250).
    But, life got in the way and here I am each day, not turning on the computer and the keyboard.
    I’m so glad to have found your RUclips channel! Thank you so much!

    I would suggest a couple of ideas....buy a piano/keyboard with 88 keys if you can and have room for it. Don't spend a fortune but get one that's middle of the road. And don't put stickers on the keys...I started with a cheaper, smaller keyboard because I didn't want to waste money if I couldn't learn, but I have just upgraded to an 88 key one and I have found it easier to play. I'm very much of a beginner and I'm not young!!,

    Traditional piano learning is time consuming for sure. To understand how to improvise, one has to have a clear understanding of music theory.
    I have seen guys playing piano only with chords and at times sounds pretty boring. Whereas I play super easy music from sheet music but gained something they didn't invest in. The results are highly different.
    I guess investments takes patience and time to deliver results. For adults this might be frustrating and seems to much at times. So yeah, there's a learning pattern for everyone ❤

    With all due respect to classical music and more sophisticated jazz, I've never understood why so many talented musicians train for years just to imitate other people's music. Nobody thinks of copying pictures of famous artists who have died long ago or who are still active. Which architect copies the buildings of other architects 1:1 or who tries to imitate the style of other writers exactly? There are thousands of talented guitarists/pianists who can play or interpret any song or jazz standard, but who can't or don't want to write their own songs, regardless of whether they're relatively simple or complicated.

      I totally get where you're coming from, but it's never too late for adults to learn the piano. Age shouldn't hold us back from pursuing our passions. 🎹☺

    • @man0sticks
      @man0sticks Год назад

      I’m not sure that Kaitlyn does in fact totally get it. The truth is that there simply are no piano teachers who know what it’s like to be an adult beginner because they all began studying piano at an early age. Among other challenges, an adult beginner passionately desires to play music that he or she loves and is intimately familiar with, be it Bach or Bill Evans, but will never be able to master. The gap between expectations and reality is often immense. Children have few if any expectations beyond a desire to please. Youth is wasted on the young.
