Laura Nyro was a flat-out GENIUS. This is a lovely song, written when she was still a teenager. Her writing would get deeper and (in many cases) darker, and her singing remained magnificent at all times. Such a tragic loss when she died of ovarian cancer, not even 50 😢
Laura Nyro wrote many songs that became top hits for lots of artists and groups such as the Fifth Dimension, Three Dog Night and Blood, Sweat and Tears.
Laura had such a beautiful voice. Check out "Stoned Soul Picnic "which she wrote and "Eli's Coming" which is a song recorded by Three Dog Night. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 49 due to cancer. Laura wrote some of the songs which were recorded by other artists like the 5th Dimension. She was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
Laura was so prolific in writing and composing. She played the piano while singing and saw her at The Bottom Line in the early 70's then again before she died in the 80's. She is great in person. She wrote many of her early songs in her teens. She was my favorite female artist along with Joni Mitchell
This song was covered by the 5th Dimension in 1969 and was their second Billboard Hot One Hundred #1. That is why it is familiar to you. Nyro was a proficient song writer and singer, but many of the biggest hits were covers by other artists including Three Dog Night ("Eli's Coming"), Blood Sweat & Tears ("And When I Die"), and Streisand ("Stoney End").
Laura Nyro originally wrote the song. I'm surprised you didn't do the Fifth Dimension (Lead singer Marilyn McCoo) recording. It went to #1 on the pop charts in 1969 and is the version most people know.
Wow! There is an artist I have not listened to in awhile! But in the 70s when I was a young teenager, she was gold to me! Nice to hear! Everyone had hits singing and performing Laura's music!
Laura Nyro was such a talented sing-a-song writer, she died much too young !!! I also liked the cover version of Wedding bell blues by the Fifth Dimension, that was awesome too. Other cover versions of songs of Laura Nyro are more by the Fifth Dimension (Stone soul picnic) and also by the Three Dong Night (Eli's comin') to name but a few.
Angela, Laura Nyro (NEAR-oh) never had much success doing her own songs, however, her songs, in the hands of other artists did incredibly well. This song, Save the Country, Sweet Blindness, and Stoned Soul Picnic were hits for the 5th Dimension, Eli's Coming was a monster hit for Three Dog Night, And When I Die was one of Blood Seat And Tears, Stoney End was a top 10 hit for Barbra Striesand.
Love your reactions! I always look forward to seeing them! Please react to The Little River Band, It’s a Long Way There. The digital remastered version, lots of great harmonies and guitar work! Carry on! Your doing great.
Nice to hear the original, but I'm more familiar with The Fifth Dimension's version. For having the name "Bill", I was centered out alot when this song was played 😏!
One of Laura Nyro's best songs was "Stoney End." Barbara Streisand had a hit with her rendition in the early '70s. Although Streisand was the better vocalist, there is something unique about the way Ms. Nyro performed the song she wrote.
One of the few times I prefer the cover version, which was by the 5th dimension, and their version went to No 1. Pretty hard to top Marilyn Mccoo's stunning vocals.
ruclips.net/video/znaYWPIM72A/видео.htmlsi=rSHQ0qsRArGzluRk This is Three Dog Night performing "Eli's Coming" (Live) with The Tennessee Symphony Orchestra in 2002. Three Dog Night along with Led Zeppelin, Blood Sweat & Tears, & Yes are one of my all-time favorite Rock Bands!!! Check it out and tell me what you think.
The 5th Dimension made a remake of this song a few years later, but I'll like to make some songs suggestions to you, check out The Toys, a lover's concerto Roberta Flack, god don't like ugly Fontella Bass, rescue me Stephanie Mills, a comfort of a man Chaka Khan, so not to worry Chevelle, never in my life Zhane, sending my love
Excellent to credit the original artist and performer, but this is the version I'm most familiar with (5th Dimension). ruclips.net/video/uiQjJraovrI/видео.html
Both this original and the cover by the 5th Dimension were great, but the wonky harmonica that meanders through this version just doesn't work for me. It's like it doesn't belong in the mix.
Marilyn McCoo's voice was incredible and, in my opinion, not given enough recognition. She was overshadowed by Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt and Barbra Streisand.
Laura Nyro, This song and "Stone Soul Picnic" were later recorded by The 5th Dimension.🥰🥰
Stone Soul's my favorite 5th Dimension. Maybe Nyros' best song.
@@chrisjamieson3452It brings back memories of summer camp
1968 for me....good times.
I remember the 5th Dimeision version
Having loved the version by The 5th Dimension, it is so great to finally hear the original by Laura. It's great.
I have always loved Laura's voice , it is haunting.

Not only did she write a lot of hits, she was very influential as a performer too.

Laura Nyro Great is an overused term, but in her case perfect. Her songs made a lot of people hits.

"Sweet Blindness", which the 5th Dimension had a hit with, is a favorite.
Yes that is my favorite as well
She was a huge influence on everyone from Barbara Streisand to Elton John. A fine writer.
Laura was amazing! i love her so much! R.I.P. great one! Patty Labell was one of her backup sings for a time!
Your hair your face your reactions are a beautiful thing.

5th dimension did this song as well.
You heard it sung by the Fifth Dimension when you reacted to their cover.
Laura Nyro is a major musician/writer. Check out her stuff!!!
The 5th Dimension covered this song in the 70's and it became their No.1 hit!!! Check it out!!! Wedding Bell Blues" by The 5th Dimension.

Thanks for the nice dip into our pop music heritage. For your future reference: The artist's name is not pronounced NY-ro but rather Nero.
Really surprised you didn't REcognize it from the 5th Dimension cover. Fantastic song from Ms Nyro, and her original version is great.
Bobbie Gentry, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell all on the scene at the same time. True talents existed back then.
And all of them were phenomenal song writers

doing a great job Angela. Like your content

Laura Nyro was a big part of the scene back then. She's known for her song writing, but she has a tremendous voice and gave a great live performance.
Nice to hear the original, but I'm more familiar with The Fifth Dimension's version. For having the name "Bill", I was centered out alot when this song was played 😏!
Unfortunately she passed away April 8th 1997 of Ovarian Cancer...she was a talented lady...
One of Laura Nyro's best songs was "Stoney End." Barbara Streisand had a hit with her rendition in the early '70s. Although Streisand was the better vocalist, there is something unique about the way Ms. Nyro performed the song she wrote.
Dixie Chicks “Traveling Solder.” With lyrics. Be careful
One of the few times I prefer the cover version, which was by the 5th dimension, and their version went to No 1. Pretty hard to top Marilyn Mccoo's stunning vocals.
I was only familiar with the 5th Dimension’s version of this song?
yes like leo cohen. cult level status and very respected. great songwriter. 5th dimension did tis great!
You probably heard the 5th dimension cover of this song
Listen to Marilyn McCoo of the 5th Dimension of the song.

She was a great singer songwriter, she was actually known more for her songwriting however I think there is a better version of her singing this song
Good song but the 5th dimension took it to another level
Hi Ms. D., I like The 5th. Dimension's version better (1969); Just saying.. They also did "Stone Cold Picnic".. ♠Mr.G..
The 5th Dimension made a remake of this song a few years later, but I'll like to make some songs suggestions to you, check out

Great song, great singer. But...I love Marilynn McCoo's version better. Marilyn is just so awesome, like you.❤
The 5th Dimension’s version is my favorite.
I'm such a huge fan of Marilyn McCoo's voice that, although this is enjoyable, I'll always like the 5th Dimension version better.
Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr did a better version in my opinion. It's the only one I heard back when. "Hedlok"
Both this original and the cover by the 5th Dimension were great, but the wonky harmonica that meanders through this version just doesn't work for me. It's like it doesn't belong in the mix.
This is very good. But I would have gone with the Fifth Dimension version.
I think I prefer Marylin McCoo's version.
Marilyn McCoo's voice was incredible and, in my opinion, not given enough recognition. She was overshadowed by Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt and Barbra Streisand.
I can understand that. I enjoyed this more than I remember.
NGL he 5th Dimensions remake is better.
