  • Marshall Field's (officially Marshall Field & Company) was a department store in Chicago, Illinois, founded in the 19th century that grew to become a large chain before being acquired by Macy's, Inc in 2005.
The former flagship Marshall Field and Company Building location on State Street in the Loop of downtown Chicago was officially renamed Macy's on State Street in 2006 and is now one of four Macy's flagship stores.
Here is a brief history about the iconic department store in the Chicago area.

It wasn't just a business. In the 1950's and 1960's, shopping at Marshall Field's was an experience. You would dress up and marvel at the interior architecture, the window displays, the elegance. Customer service was nonparliel and as it stated in the video, the staff was courteous, knowlegeable, and helpful. In fact you were treated like queens, and could share in the luxury if only with your eyes! I went there with my grandparents, and later with my mother, often to just windowshop. Once a year we would go to purchase clothes for the new school year it was a real treat. (The rest of the year clothes were from the Thrift Shop! Christmas decor was spectacular. A rare treat was a meal in thr Walnut Room. And of course, everyone would meet in "the Waiting Room." My grandmother had lost her speech due to a stroke, but I could see the joy in her eyes in we induled in Raspberry coconut drinks in those pointy paper cones. I would love to travel back in time and go there again with Grandma or my Mom!

And how about that Marzipan at Christmas! each piece was hand made, exquisite as hell, and all behind glass counters, where women in white dresses. white aprons, and white hats served you! I bet that there were at least 2 full counters & isles of it...decorated in shapes of fruit, animals, or toys and things! I remember it up until about 1983 or ??? You could pick it out by individual fruit or shape, or buy it pre-packaged.

When you come from Chicago, you have to remember Field's, the Xmas window displays, the Walnut Room, but of course, you have to have had their signature Frango mints, you couldn't get enough of them, even Frango mint ice cream pie, yum, I even used to work at Woodfield mall Field's store, those were the days!!!

Used to work as a cosmetics consultant in this beautiful store when I was a student back in the 90’s. Good old times. We had great management and wonderful polite customers. Shoplifters were prosecuted. Today it is scary to go to the mall… Crime is up due to certain events.

It was so sad. If it wasn't for Federated, that made that horrible decision the company I bet it would have been in a better financial state. The customers in Chicago would have continued shopping there. It would have been a great company if they kept Mashall Fields along with Bloomingdale's and Macy's.

At least most of the former stores are still standing and open as Macy’s. It’s obviously not the same by a long shot but that’s something.
In contrast Strawbridge’s is now almost completely gone. There’s few original locations left. Macy’s taking over all the regional department stores I think did more harm then good in my opinion.

Its sad to think that Macy's is buying up everyone and converting them to Macys. Like we really want them instead of the original stores.

MACY's killed the department store as we used to know them. While I used to love them in NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO, they gutted all of the competition that they bought up in the 1990's -2000's. and made them, and shopping, bland.

Marshall Fields WAS Chicago! They spent millions on Charities, Museums, and Universities, and even had a part in financing what would become the original tollway roads into the suburbs. The reason was to get people to the shopping centers that their Real Estate company financed in the 1950's - 1960's to build their stores and get people to them. Macy's really, really ruined a good thing. There was a style at Field's, and a quality of products all backed by service. RIP.
