i have to disagree, this game was made with so much love and care, and just because its not a 80+ hour RPG with action and enemy mechanics doesnt mean you shouldn’t pay the dev team. They worked just as hard to create a beautiful game and especially as a small studio as they are. This game is define worth $30. The mindset you have is exactly why small studios struggle, because you see it based on price instead of the journey and story it’s telling

    • @skram9245

The game has no replay value, you can have a short game and still want to come back to it. Based on the amount of hours it takes to beat this game it would mean they think their game is worth around $7 an hour with no reason to come back. The issue isn't that they shouldn't be compensated but the value in the market matters too.
If this didn't have a cat in it, would anyone give a shit? Probably not.

@@skram9245 There's plenty of short games with little to no replay value - beyond those really dedicated to it - that are worth £20+ even with the absence of a cat. I was going to wait to buy Stray but I caved because I'd been waiting for its release since I first heard about it at E3 years ago, and I ended up thinking that I was glad I didn't wait and just paid full price because I really enjoyed the gameplay and the world, and would play it again. There's things to find and cute little moments to experience.

It requires grasping at straws to get the impression that the problem is that it's not "80+ hour RPG with action and enemy mechanics". I reckon it would be a lot better if instead of 3 hours and no challenge beyond mostly just pointing where you want to go, it would be about 10-20 hours with at least basic platforming mechanics. They are a small developer from France that just made their first game, and they put the actual effort to not only release a finished product but something with inherent value that stands out from the rest of the crowd. The beauty of the game is like that of moving painting, it is beautiful to explore with enough brain teases to keep you engaged.
As someone who doesn't have the time or energy anymore to play massive open world games or multiplayer online this moody and original game has peaked my interests and actually made me want to boot up my PS4 for the first time in years. And I would like to support developers like who made what they did with scraps and actually did something they loved (since the team had many cat owners).
30-40$ actually helps small businesses that need to pay their employees whereas buying cheap products from massive corporations while offering more content for your dollars gives them overt economic power and incentivizes longer games. These big games have tons of weak content and do not justify the price tag. Stray isn't addictive nor does it swallow up 100s of hours of a person's life, but maybe that's a good thing.

Judging games by length as value isn't my norm, and it doesn't feel like it applies here. I had plenty of smiles and 'aww that's adorable' from the game - which is all I wanted from it. If I don't pay for it by simply watching others play it, there's less of the game's vibe and more of whatever the person you're watching. Sitting, chilling, and vibing through a beautifully bleak city with barely-noticeable difficulty is an experience I appreciate. Support the devs and show them the experience is appreciated.

One fails to acknowledge the game's success as what it is while the other recognizes it as a specialized piece of media which will appeal to people of a certain ilk, without insinuating that skipping out on the interactivity loses nothing or that it isn't worth buying period, which was the main idea I don't like seeing presented so early in the review without additional preamble. Certainly, this kind of game is not as engaging on a mechanical level, but it's very much the sort of thing to let people escape to a different place for awhile. The distinction between what constitutes a 'game' verse an 'experience' I think will vary widely enough for people that the usefulness of sweeping statements which presume a certain amount of difficulty or complexity is required before something is worth your time is somewhat lost to the point of doing the broader audience a disservice.

The game is an absolute joy to play through. It's filled with moments that really show you how much love went into every little detail. Sure, the jumping mechanic isn't as fluid as it could be (and yes, you can only jump on certain marked platforms), but that makes sense given that the main focus of the game is to explore, interact with the world, and solve puzzles. Timing your jumps is an added challenge that would only take away from the overall experience in my opinion. It isn't 80 hours long, but again, that isn't a necessarily a bad thing. Most people who are going to buy this game want something cute (that isn't a rage inducing, stressful chore), and that can be played on weekends: not a grind-fest. I think Stray is worth every penny, and the developers should be applauded! Game of the year so far for me.

That alone should be enough reason to play, but for me personally exploring the world was even more of a highlight, since it's so interesting and atmospheric. More so, getting a chance to explore it through the perspective of a cat is something I found extremely fun and fulfilling. Climbing a building to get through a window or go through a tight crack in an alley will never get old for me.

literally other games have been far better than this game for the same price point. Yet got shit on at launch for being 30 bucks for the same length of a game.
Plus you kinda sound sensitive saying he is morally not right. It was neither good or bad. By this logic you are morally wrong for supporting companies selling over priced games. Which will come back to bit you in the ass. Ever since CASE POINT from dead rising (5-10 bucks on launch for like 5 hours), companies have been slowly turning that price point for 5-8 hour games into 30 bucks... Stray had something I don't see in very many games since Half-Life. It's what I like to call, "the touch of valve". It's hard to explain but when you put THIS amount of detail into your linear games, it just immerses you so much more. Also, I feel like everyone is missing the point of the game while focusing on the cat. Cat + cyberpunk was nothing more then a hook. What they were going for was the perfect protagonist to act as a lens so the player can be immersed in the game. By focusing on the "cuteness" of the cat you're completely disregarding the reason as to why you're a cat as opposed to a human.
Literally, I have not played a game like this since half-life. Clearly, the game is short so the devs could make a detailed game within their budget, and dang was that a good 5 hours. I'd rather an amazing, breathtaking 5 hour game then a boring slog of a 50 hour game. Support the devs so Stray's sequel can be leagues better. Luke gonna disagree with you dude. Unique games that are fun even for one run is a good thing. I'd suggest people should check out games that while not setting the world on fire did something Unique and did it in a way that delivered exactly as advertised, unlike last of us part 2...or no man's sky (in the beginning)....or fallout 76...if it's on sale I say why not buy it? It looks fun, plays well and looks beautiful

The 4 hour length and lack of replay value doesn't justify the 30 dollar pricetag to most people, I'd rather spend twice that on an RPG that I can play for hundreds of hours and not get bored.

If you are someone who only plays AAA games, you might not be able to appreciate this game. If you enjoy playing chill indie games at all, you will like Stray.
Personally, I enjoyed hanging out in the game for 5-6 hours instead of rushing through it and it was a good time. I enjoy a “mindless” game to play in between playing other more challenging games. When I was struggling against a boss in Elden Ring, I would take a break and go play Katamari Damacy for a while. It’s good to mix it up.

I can't disagree more with your statement regarding the experience being the same if you play the game or if you watch a streamer. That's just denying what an interactive videogame is. Experiencing the game (any game, for that matter) is 100% better (and different) than watching someone else play it. And Stray isn't different.

Really? A game that's made by an indie studio with a lot of love and care and you are actively saying don't buy it? Rhetoric like this is one of the reasons why a lot of people despise game reviewers/analysts. The dev's earned the right to be fully supported by the community and you using your platform to say not buy it seriously affects their livelihoods and hurts the indie community in the process.
