- I rode the struggle bus on this job. Looking back, it's important to have the right axe and decent wedges if you plan on felling a tree without anything pulling it over. Overall, I learned a lot and I think many of you could learn from this video too. I'm going to bust your balls a bit on this job.First thing if you are not used to felling with wedges ,don't practice with all those hazards around you .The huge power line combined with a super busy road is way too much of a gamble on your part .What if that tree fell back onto a car and killed someone, can you live with that ? Also clean up your work area ,you had too many trip hazards around your feet ,an extra 10 minutes isn't going to hurt you to clean up a bit .Every 3 days one tree professional is killed in that work so please don't become one of them .I have over 30 years in the industry and safety is always first .I hope you don't take all of this the wrong way ,I just don't want you to hurt someone or yourself. Great vid otherwise 🙂
Thanks for the comment. I don't mind a little ball busting. 👍😉
Find someone with spikes and rope gear. So much easier to climb up and rope everything Zipline style in a safe and controlled manner.
Ps, "experts" are fluent in all aspects of their task. Keep at it and keep learning but don't call yourself an expert please.
This video show's 100% humility something in today's society we lack...alot.. thank you for your service...and I would hire you in a heart beat. Thanks man💪
Also, what can help you is before you make your backup. Take that bark off where you going to make your back cut . Clean it up back there. It helps the wedges sink in a lot better.
Every arborist that has been in the industry long enough has been in a situation like that ,they just didn't video it and put in on RUclips to get roasted 🤣 ,thats the hardest part about treework a lot of it you gotta find out the hard way if it will work and make do with what you have not everyone can have all the fancy gear
Oh I knew the roasting was coming. 😀🤷♂️ I'm not scared. Haha
Good call on the rope with all the canopy on the highway side, stakes are too high for a mistake. for those slick wedges a little grit in the cut can solve the problem take an old strip of coarse belt sander belt and put it in with the wedge, a little extra friction does amazing things. Throwing some sand in the cut will do it too, as long as you're through running the saw. Enjoyed the video, stay safe.
The belt is a cool idea! Thanks
Dude that's so smart
Before you make your back cut. Trim bark off for wedges to go in easier
Right tools for the right job. A fallers axe or Evan a 4-6 pound sledge, and the proper wedges.
Getting a new axe and wedges asap!
Pick up an orange dead blow hammer ($20). they don’t bounce, easy to find on the ground and more compact than a felling axe. also don’t tear up cheap wedges. Great vid and good recovery!
make your cuts lower, easier to pound wedges...also allows for a proper swing (arms fully extended, meeting at the palm swell). replace those stihl wedges with some k&h.
Good tips! Will do.
Yea I know the feeling, those abs wedges are awful I broke a wedge and had to leave the tree and get some good old aluminum ones. I now use those hard plastic ones I believe them to be polyamide or polycarbonate.
And the fiskars poll is narrow I can imagine the frustration.
Another tip for the future is to make all the cuts closer to the ground so when you whack your wedges they are further down, and then you can pound them with the axe head at an angle so you aren't trying to meet 2 narrow parallel lines (axe poll and wedge)
Copy that. I might try lower next time I fall a tree.
Used the Stihl plastic wedges myself before and know your frustrations, they are rubbish.
Used aluminium wedges with grooves now much better or use grooved plastic wedges on smaller trees.
Great video 👍
Thanks for daring to share that! Definitely a good lesson.
It was very intense to watch and I am glad everything came out OK.
Glad to share. 👍
To be fair you hit the tree a lot more than the wedge, this was almost like watching me try to down a tree, we all have our off days, it's great you show us yours, kudos, though this made me laugh, you're still much better at this than i ever was.
👍
Dude you can't even hit the wedge You keep putting the tree over and over come on now
The first tree had me on edge. I was felling a dead oak tree about 3 feet in diameter and I wanted to fell (wedge) it opposite of where a heavy limb branched out (stupid me). I made my face cut with my Husky 395. While back cutting I used a single wedge to keep the tree from setting back. As I cut further in towards the face cut, the weight of the oak tree and the heavy branch set back really hard on my bar, pinching it, and the wedge. I tried hitting the wedge with a sledge hammer to no avail. I walked away from the tree to re-assess the situation when all of a sudden the tree broke at the hinge and felled opposite of the face cut. The trunk landed on my Husky 395, cracking the case in two and destroying my saw. No other structure or thing was destroyed. What a life lesson that was. I will never repeat that and I will be using a massdam puller in hairy situations ar as often as I can. Thank you for sharing this video. 🇺🇸🪵🪓🌲🪓🪵🌲🪓🪵🪓🌲
using the ole maasdam… love that thing when working alone.💪🏼
I love it even with help! Worth its weight in gold.
I really like the redheads wedges. something to see if you like them.
Seems like you got your head tied up progressing your falling career . For that moment it seemed to ignore the life ending consequences of losing that tree over your shoulder. Your first job should be to keep everyone around you and yourself safe. Nothing else comes before that. I love your channel and the work you do. Keep safety number one, and keep on chuckin' trees!
Thanks for watching. 👍
@@VeteranTreeService I know the judgment of the internet can be harsh en mass. I'm sorry if my comment made you feel bad. I think you already realized your mistake before you posted the video. I just felt the need to bring the dire consequences of that choice to your attention. Thanks for showing us all you do!
@@GreenTeaDigital All good here brother. 👍
Appreciate the channel and what youre doing! Great video man!
Thanks Nate.
When aluminum was invented it was great so I got a aluminum extension pole made up because it was light weight, before hand I used small trees to push a tree over, a 12 feet extension pole or more on your hip depending on the lean of the tree up a tree the leverage is unreal, 50 years ago were tough times .
Maybe you were using a left handed axe and that’s why you couldn’t hit the wedges lol.
Lol. Good one. 😉
Don’t beat yourself up to much any of us that do tree work have had a wedge bounce out and had a tree sit back. Awesome job recovering from it. I do have to say I would recommend practicing on some not as high stacks trees lol. I’m waiting on some axe heads to come I’ll have to build you a wedge banging axe because that was painful to watch. Good job sticking with it keep up the good work brother.
That would be awesome! 🪓 I like that this video shows how difficult it can be to fall a 100ft tree. Loggers make it look so easy. It would have gone much smoother had I had the right axe and decent wedges.
As stated, lowering your cut will increase the angle difference between your wedges and the axe face. There's so much to be said for practice, practice, practice, practice. You need to achieve that muscle memory of guiding that axehead to your intended target. Unless your one of about 5% of the population that has that natural hand to eye coordination. Keep working at it. Once you've laid a tree down, the remaining stump makes a great practice mock up for working on your precision. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
I want to stay positive dude. But I have a serious problem with you trying to justify walking under a tree that's cut, wedged, and has a tensioned rope on it for no reason. Why? Because it's the shortest path and quickest? Because you're lazy? And then trying to justify it that you could run at any time. That whole drop zone was covered in debris. You never plan to get your foot stuck in some brush or twist your ankle while the tree falls on you. You try to justify your bad behavior and you're going to teach the next RUclips cowboy wannabe to do the same and someone is going to get killed. Take the extra minute and walk a wide arc. Better yet. Don't cut trees alone so you're never in that situation to begin with. Be a better example.
Thanks for your comment. 👍
If you cut a little lower you can swing your axe on a downwards angle and not be strait on with the wedges, make it easier to hit them. Like your wedges are horizontal and if your axe is vertical some, it will be easier to hit
I need to start doing that!
I would say start with wedges that you can stack and maybe a smaller axe so you could actually hit the wedges
Never seen that before..crazy fall toward self ..
Brother. .. as soon as that first wedge didn't work the pucker factor would have been a 10000% 😯😯😯..good job nice come back...
Ya. Not something I wanted to see either.
Great video. Intense
Thanks!
Shorter handle, bigger head for wedge bangers. That Fisker may be the homeowners best friend but you won’t see it on any fallers belts. I promise. Or fiberglass handle axes at all.
Agreed
Enjoyed the video. Your planning was right on. Your swinging of the and the too small butt on the axe was one of your problems. And second, get those wedges in quick....even just hand shove in. Then keep advancing them in as you cut. That's it! I would have put lines in both trees seeing as how you had the power lines and traffic in back. Ropes are good. Do a few more. Get a real axe and practice swinging it. 👍
👍
You gotta remember that The wedge is not an axe. If they're bouncing out and you still have a gap, you need to cut a little more. You need to cut a little and then pound a little cut a little pound a little. Looks like you have 3-4 inches of holding wood which is a little too much?
Ya, I'm with you. My wedges had a terrible taper. I couldn't get them to bite.
Better call up Madsen's and get you some K&H wedges!
👍
Oh man, this hurt to watch. There isn't a worse axe to use. Also, those K&H wedges are expensive, but boy are they worth it. All the other wedges just don't work right. Second place goes to those wedges with the little barbs on one side. Then when you double stack you can put the barbs on the outside, and sawdust in between.
Couldn't agree more.
The more tree videos I watch, the more I realize what a real pro August Hunicke is.
He's great for sure! One of the best! With that said, I could have edited this video in a way that looked like I hit the edge every time and didn't struggle at all. Which would you rather see? 😉🙂
@@VeteranTreeService with all the required editing to do so would it have qualified as a short? 🤪
Killing me!!!
Need some wedges from sappy supplies!
Wait, Shouldn't Jacob Rogers be the one making this comment? 😀 @GuiltyofTreeson
@@VeteranTreeService 🤣
Yeah you do!!! :D
I ain't a professional faller, but I was wanting to jump in and help you on this one.
Thanks man.
Stay safe Man!
nice
Yer bro a line in before doesnt hurt just use if needed. Good vids thanx'
Ya. I always had that option. I wasn't ready to throw in the towel though. It wasn't going backwards on me with the amount of hinge I still had left. Worst case, the wedge would have popped out and the tree would have sat on my saw.
That was different.
Slick wedges suck. They’re down now but a little stressful on that first one. Nice work
Ya. Different is good though. I'm back in 2 tall trees today. It's raining. 🙄
@@VeteranTreeService lol
Back in the element & kicking it I’m sure
wow that live traffic lane looked a little close, it was giving me the shiz
Can you imagine the tree falling towards it. 😳
Nice
Check out the zeppelin bend for joining two ropes together. One of my favorites-the 69 knot!
Thanx for showin it cos happens. Always had big allow wedge with us. It just stayed when in an yer i like a hammer just no bounce back edge. But im no feller. Cheers
Man. That was painful to watch. Definitely chalk that up as a learning experience. Nothing was damaged and trees hit the ground with no damage. In a way, job well done.
Great learning experience!
Oh man, that was like taking a knife to a gun fight. Get the right equipment for the job and practice in a less deadly environment. They call it driving a wedge for a reason. Get a five pound fallers axe and when you hit the wedge keep contact even after the initial blow this will drive the wedge and keep it from bouncing out.
Still won the fight. 😉 Thanks for watching.
Always use a fallers axe and proper wedges PLEASE - this is a good example of what not to do while falling trees - clean up ur work area Sir Please
Ya. My title wasn't click bait. 👍
I just keep watching and watching. I know. I keep Commenting that bark inside of your back cut is burning you. Every time you try to put a Wedge in , you can see it. You should have tried to get the out of there somehow. Never leave that in there, never learning experience, that's all.
Point the handle at the ground and you'll quit missing
Definitely need a wider face on your striking tool, axel or sledge.
Agreed. That was so frustrating!
Get yourself a felling axe. Second one was easier than the first.
Agreed
I wont bust your balls, you kept your head and kept working it over until it went.
And while I don't ever offer advice to other tree cutters, I do sometimes share what "I do" in similar situations.
And in that situation, when the wedge won't go in because the tree sat back on you for whatever reason, I either pull my bar or if its pinched because the trees sitting on it, I grab my back up saw and do a slight bore cut straight in where I want the wedge.
Not all the way, I stop way short of the hinge wood but far enough to get it started without it bouncing out. It won't impact the hinge wood strength, you're just boring out a small flat slice to slip the wedge in deeper, as long as you stay well short of the hinge wood.
Cool video, tense moments there on a tall one but you stuck with the tree and got it done.
Thanks man. Thanks for watching and commenting.
A little too much risk involved on trying something new with those trees. Glad you knew to put a rope. Dont get to comfortable with a low anchor with the winch line. Line angle that steep helps about as much as your poor wedges. Get longer 3 strand and some new wedges and safety factor would increase a lot 🤙
I had that line set 50ft up on a 100-125ft tree. Maybe I didn't do a good job showing that.
@VeteranTreeService you showed that well enough. The rule of thumb I was taught was greater than 1/2 the height and no more than 2/3. So just a little low from your numbers... my main recommendation of a longer rope is to have the winch at least a tree length to 1.5 away. With enough rope you can redirect the winch closer to your stump when you are cutting alone helps not having to walk as far between winch and wedges 🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing just trying to share my experiences 👌
@@codblkops85 👍
Not to be ranting here since most reasonable criticism has been expressed already.
But I want to put the emphasis on the hundreds of cars passing right behind you, minding their business not being aware of the hazard.
Powerlines can be repaired.
If you put yourself in danger, that is your own call.
But in my opinion, those people well within the dangerzone is an absolute no-go unless you go the extra mile. Mind how tree contractors implement traffic control for jobs near busy roads.
Since you didn't have that, you have to be extra careful
If it was me, I would have gone up both trees and set a proper hard tie 2/3 up in the tree.
Winch them both.
100% control.
Minimal risk.
No ego, getting it done.
Would have taken you just as long as banging those wedges forever
That's what professionals do, right?
Get the job done safe.
I know you didn't mean any harm to anyone but this is a good time to grow and turn pro. I know you are not bad at what you are doing.
Just poor judgement on this one.
All the best
@@treeglidertas8336 well said. It's different whenever you start creating unsafe conditions for the public that probably had no idea what was happening right next to them.
Dude that truck is sick, where did you get it?
Custom built Ram 5500 4x4, 12ft box, ladder box deleted for extra chip space. I ordered it from different places and had it all put together. One of a kind. 😃
Very cool man. I love it. Every thing black is sick.
I love you brother but it hard to watch you start this job and not be prepared or understand what was going on. Also the timing on when you strike the edge makes a difference. Best of luck going forward but get some time with a shorter handle pounding axe and better wedge
Both in the mail. They would have made all the difference.
All of my fingernails are gone and my teeth hurt…..
Haha. That's funny.
You scared me doing that one lol get you a bigger hammer from one tree guy to another don't do it by yourself be safe
👍
Also, buddy, you need to get better wedges. I like to use k and h. And I have really nice axes. Wedgebangers from Jeff Schroeder.
Jeff just mailed me an axe.
@@VeteranTreeService Yeah, buddy, I have about 15 axes from him. I also collect them plus I use them every day. They are amazing, he does wonderful work. You will love it what kind did you get
@@br-dj2ti A arborist jersey axe. Way better than what I'm currently using!
@@VeteranTreeService Oh yeah that's a nice axe
Dude......for one thing you need a different/much lighter pounding device. Your hit ratio with that long handled axe is around 6%. A 2 or 3 pound mall would suite you well !! It was painful watching you continually swing that axe and continually miss the wedges !
Ya, painful. how do you think I felt. Haha. I'm replacing the axe and wedges.
Upgrade your axe!! You hit wedges worse than Tube-salad!!!! Get some new wedges from SappySupplies?! Practice hitting a metal pin into the ground with your new axe. Worked on a concrete crew for about a month and a half in my younger days......you get good quick....cause replacing sledgehammer handles sucks!! Axe handles suck more!! Have a great week!!
Yep. Upgrading the axe soon. Already bought some new wedges.
I mean, you have lift. You can see that every time you put a wedgin. It's banging out that's because of you have bark inside of your cut. That's exactly what it is, I'm telling you the truth. God bless, buddy, sorry for all the comments. Just trying to help great job.
Thanks for the comments. I like to hear everyone's ideas and opinions.
Yikes, you need to practice wedegmanship and swing an axe.
At 8 minutes you cant hit straight and never have. Please please go and practice u may be a veteran but you are not a veteran tree feller. 55 years ago when I learned the hard way to use a club hammer and chisel to de flux metal cutting of girders and tidy up the holes I nearly cried by the end of the day. Stay safe and start slowly it will come. God bless take care
Yikes! That was sketchy!
Falling trees is not easy. 👍
@@VeteranTreeService Definitely not easy but fascinating to watch!
That's exactly why you made 2 cuts in the back. Not good to do, buddy, I'm sure you know, God bless stay safe.
Ya, it can create more problems with wedging as seen here.
Why don't you use a hammer on the wedges.😮
That would work. Or a short mallet.
Dude! Dont ever do that again! If you hit the wedge, it will work
Lol. I don't get it. But your comment is funny. 😂
Thats why I always use the aluminum wedges with the deep grooves, those darn plastic ones are garbage.
Omg how many misses jeez
All the misses!
"Any landing you walk away from is a good landing..." Maybe; but if it isn't textbook, you have lessons to learn. And this job has a few lessons, eh? 👍🇦🇺🪓
Not only did I experience it live, I got to watch it back many times. Now let's go fall something BIGGER! 😂
