- On May 5, 2013 I was lucky enough to be able to tour Amtrak's Maintenance Facility in Wilmington, DE. Built in 1903 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Wilmington Shops were the primary maintenance facility of the PRR for their electric locomotive fleet and passenger coaches. Today, the Shops are one of Amtrak's three main back shops, the others being in Bear, DE and Beech Grove, IN. Amtrak currently performs heavy maintenance, overhauls, wreck repairs and modifications to the AEM-7 AC and DC locomotive fleets as well as the HHP-8 electric locomotives. The Wilmington Shops also maintain Amtrak's work diesel fleet. Component overhauls and repairs for a wide variety of components are also performed at the Wilmington Shops. As well as maintaining Amtrak equipment, the Wilmington Shops also maintain MARC's (Maryland Area Rail Commuter) electric locomotive fleet. Soon, these shops will also maintain the new ACS-64 locomotives being built for Amtrak. This tour was sponsored by the Electric Railroaders' Association (www.erausa.org). The tour was given by Amtrak managers from the Wilmington Shops. These Amtrak employees were fantastic! They were very friendly and informative. They reflected very well on Amtrak and its maintenance facility in Wilmington.
Contents:
0:10 Diesel Locomotive Shop - here Amtrak maintains its work diesel fleet
1:11 Electric Locomotive Shop - this is where Amtrak maintains all of its electric locomotives as well as MARC electrics
3:11 Truck Shop - here you will see HHP-8 and AEM-7 trucks
5:02 Components Shops - there are many shops at Wilmington that maintain many different components. These include HVAC units, wheels, traction motors, electronic components, and much more.
11:12 Horizon Coach 54564 - this car is used as a test shell for mockup interiors. Viewliner 2300 is also kept at Wilmington for this purpose. Unfortunately it was getting its wheels worked on so we did not get to see it.
12:46 Outdoor Yard - you will see various locomotives in the yard that are at Wilmington for the moment
14:37 NEC Mainline adjacent to Shops - you will see a SEPTA Silverliner V and a Northeast Regional pass by the shops
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy!
If you like my videos, please subscribe for more great videos like this in the future!
If you have any questions about what you saw in the video, please ask! I will do my best to answer.
Right on, Electric Railroaders' Association! I see that you capture more motion pictures of other trains than just rapid transit cars.
I worked here 36 years ago as a hostler before going to engine man school upstairs with Al Graf. It seems like another life now, thanks for the memories, by the way operated most of the locomotives shown at one point or the other. I was the last to move "Old Ironside" the riveted GG1 before it went to railroad museum: a lot of history was made at this facility by a lot of great men.
Wow! Things have changed since I worked there. I hired on with Penn Central in 1973 and it sure didn't look like this. In 1986 I moved to work on Auto Train in Sanford, FL. Thanks for the video and bringing back some wonderful memories!!!
Thanks for sharing! It is always special to hear from railroaders that have personal ties with my videos. I guess that you worked on the PC GG1's when you were here--very neat! I am happy to share the video!
So what happened to u after Conrail took over
Nice thanks for uploading this. I really like the AEM-7 train. One of my favorite Amtrak passenger locomotives. I use this train a lot on Microsoft train simulator for the NEC missions.
Cool! Thanks for watching
Wow. What a privilege. Your video really grabbed my attention. Good quality and lots of interesting information! thank you so much for sharing.
You know what... I think i might wanna work at an Amtrak Yard one of these days, Thanks for sharing these videos :)
My brother worked here on Vandever Ave.. he took me up here.. great memory!
Hey man that video is amazing and what is the best part is that amtrak gave you guys a tour see that's what is going to make people turn away from the airlines amtrak is the best and always will be the best for traveling
Thanks! Testing for the ACS-64 has already begun at the Transit Technology Center in Pueblo, CO. Testing on the NEC will be this summer. The first train in passenger service should be this fall.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I found out about this tour by searching for it on Google. You should definitely try to go sometime, I'm sure they would love it!
Thanks! That's really neat that you were able to go along also. It was a great trip. I just tried to send you a PM but it said you had to add me as a contact first.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting, beautifully done !! Thanks sharing
Wow!!!
Amazing footage.
Like I am there.
Thanks
Wow! Great workshops!
Great narration Bob👍
Yes, the AEM-7 and HHP-8 carry all trains on the NEC that are not Acelas. This includes the long distance trains such as the Silver Star and Silver Meteor.
Great Video! Actually I was there for this tour. I think you were next to me when I was photographing the Horns of the HHP-8 .
awesome footage
I just toured this same shop 1 month ago on the Farewell to the AEM-7 excursion.
I loved your video. I wish there had been more 'conversation' in regard to the areas which we were fortunate enough to see, as guest viewers! I was fascinated by the motor-rewinding facility-among others. The wheel shop was very interesting. Joe Boardman, we know you have a very busy operation on your hands, but in all sincerity, I believe, that a really informative film-documentary should be made, of "What Makes Amtrak"! We support Amtrak in many ways, and, through the efforts and generosity of folks like 'acelaphillies', and the other 'Societies" and folks, which were mentioned, (to be able to have arranged this tour), I believe that 'Your Public', needs to get a better feeling for what you and Amtrak are all about! Great video. Please keep them coming if you can.
+Sol Carter Sol, thanks for watching! I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully I will be able to do more tour videos some day.
Tank you for all you have done so far! These videos are so educational and informative. People take so much for granted when they see a coach or a locomotive, but seldom do they ever consider how these 'things' came about or what makes them tick! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
I didn't see any train washers here at Wilmington. They do that at Sunnyside and places like that. Yes, the AEM-7's are dirty, but they are run hard. Better for your train to be on time than look fashionably late.
Thank you!!🤗
Thanks for the compliment. Believe it or not, these ads really do benefit me as the producer of these videos. I am happy to provide free videos on RUclips but I will keep the ads because they do help me out.
Great video! Very very cool.
Awesome video!!!!
Awesome video!
Search Google for Coney Island Shop Tour. Unfortunately I don't see any coming up right now, but just keep looking every now and then. That's how I found this tour.
Awesome video!!!! :)
The 1100 is actually a 80 Tonner, and yes they still use it as a shop switcher.
Assembled using metric threaded fasteners & components. Big chuckle on my face.
就u
awesome video.
Thanks!
Nice cheers Steve ..
My friend lost a medium sized bolt in that shop. So if you find one, it's probably his.
Mike Day oof
The first one will probably be here next month.
Awesome!
Thanks for the great video. How did u hear about this tour ? I would like to go sometime with my father and maybe my nephew.
the toasters are being stored here once ACS testing is complete the toasters will be cut up and scrapped some of them will go to museums.
I WISH they would repaint that hhp-8 #690 into a shore line east hhp-8. And it will be remembered into 700

I can't reply directly to your comment because of your Google+ settings, so hopefully you get this. The tour did cost money, however your bigger issue is actually finding a tour. Amtrak does not directly offer tours, rather this took place through a 3rd party: the USA Electric Railroaders Society. (www.erausa.org) Your best bet if you want a tour is to monitor the trips that are taking place with the local RR associations (ERA, NRHS, etc.). That's what I did. It took a few years of waiting, but sooner or later a tour will probably pop up. Thanks for watching, and I hope this helps!
Me in the future: alright train time to go to Wilmington. The train: Nooooo
Wow those loco's have my name on them! Interesting video. But indeed the camera movement is a bit quick. Hope to be traveling on the Acela in the near future.
Great video. Definitely something that you don't do everyday. Did you happen to find out when their gonna start using the ACS 64 engines?
I see no one working how is maintenance completed?
new engines are already dirty (depending on where it goes) from 3-6 months after being bought.
they got a fan too
definitely cool but i am also wondering what happens to old trains are there special junkyard or boneyard equivalent for these vehicles or are they completely recycled for new trains? Basically are there designated junkyards for trains? And if so where are the junkyard usually located?
I Wish they would restore that HHP-8
"Eyesight is priceless (we don't like insurance payouts) protection is cheap ( so we'll leave that up to you)"
Cool tour. Like how he doesn't talk to you like you're an idiot.
Thanks! The Amtrak employees were definitely a highlight of the trip!
COOOOOL
Doesn't cost anything for the tour or what? I'm just curious a little. Because I really want to take a tour. Then I'll upload them to my channel. Please let me know. Thanks!
When will the new fleet arrive to amtrak
travel sonic, the buildings are 1903 era!
How old are these facilities? As in, were there any new buildings put in, old torn down, or are these the same buildings the Pennsy GG-1s were worked on up until the early 80s?
Is there any way I can get inside the NYC subway shop in Coney Island?
Wait they still have E-2s or what
10:21 A wild toaster appears!
How do you get a tour? I wanna see Inside too
Great subject , but I got sea sick watching it. Move the camera slowly . Don’t give everyone whiplash.
I will call the union pacific railroad to let up 844 go to willmington, DA and it will stop outside and it's driver will tell Amtrak stop scrapping An Amtrak hhp8 659 and it will be repainted into a regular hhp8 and Amtrak 737 will take it outside and push it into up 844's front and it will take it to roanoke, VA and it will be displayed in the middle next to 1218 & 2156 and 844 needs to move some locomotives in the middle and put them outside and hhp8 659 will be displayed in the middle and also Amtrak 145 will take an Amtrak amfleet coach to the ivy city yard to be repainted into an acela regional coach and it will be taken to Roanoke, VA and it will be behind Amtrak hhp8 659 and Wabash 1009 will be behind the acela regional coach and n&w 1776 will be behind 1009 and hhp8 659 will be displayed there for 15 years until it runs again
There was hhp8 659 in the electric shop and also I want it to be moved into the Virginian Museum of transportation in roanoke, VA and it will next to n&w 1218 and 2156 and also when 611 is there is can be behind 611 and also it will displayed there for 15 years until it runs again and also 844 will go to the ivy city yard to let it's driver tell the people to paint an Amtrak amfleet car into the acela regional amfleet paint scheme car and it will be repainted Inside the shops and also when it"s done being repainted it will dry in the sun and it will dry for 1 hours and after 1 hours 844 will take it to roanoke, VA and it will couple behind hhp8 659 and it will stay there for 15 years until 659 pulls the train when it runs again and hhp8 659 needs to be displayed in the Virginian Museum of transportation in roanoke, va
Elijah Trofort VMT has enough
Does anyone work there? I see a lot of stuff and such but no workers.
Nobody works on the railway. We just show up and cook food.. maybe look at the machines? But that's about it. We are worthless and proud of it.
Are any of Amtrak's E8s still around?
Not on the Amtrak roster, no. Thanks for watching!
acelaphillies At least they weren't all scrapped.
amtrak uses genset's?
Yes, they use them for switching duty mostyly on the West Coast. Although, I am not sure there are any in this video?
why is thare a marc hhp-8 thare?
MARC outsources it's maintenance work on electric locomotives to Amtrak because MARC does not have the assets to maintain electrics. Thanks for watching!
1:22 what's that?
WTC WHY ARE THERE MARC HHP8S THERE
Because AMTRAK operates them for MARC - they are driven up from Ivy City for that.
the only problem with this job is i'm not a very good maintenance worker
A Delaware LLC
Poor audio and picture
Nice! This is so cool. I have a tour of the Beech Grove shops on my channel -- check it out!
Thanks. I checked out your video as well-nice! I always enjoy shop tours!
I find that the motion of the video camera is very distracting, to much jumping around and very unstable camera movement. It would have been more enjoyable to watch if it was shot by a professional photo journalist .
or at least a steadicam or monopod. The other thing that really bothered me was how bad the sound was, it had weird distortion.
Too bad.
I had to stop watching...the motion of the video camera was terrible. Maybe the cameraman needs a course on how to use it before attempting to do this again.
wow. the lot of you are a bunch of ingrates. load up your own , or cut out the armchair criticism and just say thank you for the free video by a well meaning guy. not everyone on RUclips is Steven Spielberg. If you are seasick, take a Dramamine and move on.
+acelaphillies
And just like any other government entity, there's a whole lot of nothing goin on...
Thanks!
1:33 what's that?
marc hhp-8
I am trying to figure that out too? It is the shape of a turbo after cooler but I don't think that's it. Can't get a good look at it... Some type of rectifier assembly?
