- How will a Lehigh Maximum Expansion .45 Judge 220 grain slug perform when shot out of an AirForce Texan .45 Big Bore airgun? Let's find out!
This experiment with the Lehigh Maximum Expansion slug is actually the continuation of a multi year effort I have been on to find projectiles that will cause the maximum amount of blood trails and ethical harvesting of White Tail Deer here in Michigan. I have been advocating through the Airgun Sporting Association to the Michigan DNR to allow for air bolts and airbows to be used during all deer hunting seasons.
Specifically, I have been pushing for these devices to be used for disabled hunters during the archery season and for ALL hunters for all other seasons. There is a Michigan House Bill that stalled in committee last year, but there are signs it may move forward soon.
Until then I set out to find a slug that would be legal to hunt with for deer that could potentially perform like a broadhead. I think I may have found an option with the Lehigh Maximum Expansion slug for the Judge .45, but it took some modification and tinkering to get it to work in my AirForce Airguns .45 Texan.
So what do you get when you put a big bore deer hunting airgunner and a farmer into a room to brainstorm? You get this wicked Lehigh Maximum Expansion .45 cal. pill that expands to 1.75 inches at less than 1000 FPS with around 12 inches of ballistic gel penetration!
So I got to talking to a friend who is friends with a local farmer who powder coats some of his agriculture equipment. I called him up and got to brainstorming about coating options for these Lehigh Maximum Expansion slugs to bring them from .452 up and over .457 so I could size them down.
So he told me about this Teflon / Graphite powder coating concoction they use on harvesting equipment to make them non-stick to help clean up easier and moving material to slide along ramps. Sounds perfect!
So I gave him a handful of these .452 Lehigh Maximum Expansion slugs for the .45 Taurus Judge Pistol and he coated them for me. I just got them back and sized them .457. They had a bit of a rough texture at first but pushed super slippery though the sizer. If I had to guess they started off at .459 coated.
I will be taking them out for accuracy testing and to shoot them into some meat. If I could get 1 to 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards with Teflon tape - this should be even better! I am thinking about shooting these into a big ham to see how they expand.
Since the AirForce Airguns Texan .45 has basically the same velocity / power profile of a Raging Judge .45 pistol, I should see similar results which is down right MASSIVE expansion. The deer blood trail potential and terminal ballistics of these things are most likely the most devastating projectile ever to be shot from an airgun.
With that said, from my testing I would call this a very niche and specific use case ammo options for close range deer hunting similar to archery range type of hunting. About 40 yards and closer. These do not have enough penetration to consider them a good option out any further than that. The good news is most of the deer I have harvested have been within that close range. Stay tuned for more testing!
if Lehigh decides to make these for the .457 they should sell like hot cakes! those seem perfect!
Now this has tremendous possibilities. Great Find Chris!
KnifeMaker
I hope they have this in .357
Great video!!!!! And resarch
357 wouldn't have enough power to open up the slug
Good lord man! LOL! That's nuts, nice job 👍
Fkng OUTSTANDING!👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
One shot, one kill. 💪
I enjoy your vids and all you do. Wisconsin DNR stated “ we have no intentions of passing laws to allow Airguns for deer hunting. I would love for this to change could use some help on this.
That's okay use arrows in your air gun now it's a crossbow got you there Wisconsin plus the arrows are almost Unstoppable
Great review! Success!
The expanding ones are awesome they would be great for a turkey out of an air rifle like my aea 50 caliber
I just purchased a .452 airgun... might have to try this.
Impressive! I bet powder coating would also work. The pedals folding inward when hitting a substantial bone would seem to be advantageous versus the pedals deploying and limiting penetration. If accuracy holds out to 75 - 100 yds you would have one heck of a projectile.
Need to make a video of cleaning your gun after this. Need some lead-free ammo for my .45 Texan.
Love it ! I'd use them on javelina out of the bulldog 357
Very nice. That will drop a sizable creature. Nice exit on the butt roast.
Thank you. Hey I am still trying to find some non-lead ammo for my AF Texan .457. Lehigh only has .452 and .458. How terrible would it my if I shot the .458 in my texan? I really need to get some non lead to carry on public lands because I m in CA and the game wardens out here are often not cool. Technically the lead ammo ban does not apply to non fire arms but I want to have ammo on my person to show them just in case I get questioned. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I'd even buy a small amount from you if your willing to give them up. I hunt a lot and just don't want them to harass me or confiscate my Texan.....
Impressive
Now that AF has the new CF Bottle and the TX2 Valve, could you possibly revisit this video and possibly do a Part 2 with these? Would love to see how well they perform. Or maybe fire them in a .50 Cal using a Sabot?
Go look through my channel. I did extensive gel testing with the CF TX2 and the .50 cal with these
Yeppers NSA 240 grain shooting out of aea 50 caliber Challenger Bullpup will leave a fine blood Trail and super expansion plus it's accurate.. only wish they made a 350 grain
That’s insane! Hello big game world!
What a round!!!
Jst got my challenger 457 a few days ago and this bud came to my mind. Luckily I had it saved from whenever ya posted it. I’m somewhat ignorant so bear with me…..What do you mean by “sizing” the bullet, post powder coating? is this a tool that you need to use?
You should compare the Teflon coat to a hightek bullet coat!
Man you were on for this years before anyone haha
Dude, Now I'm going to need to try this for my 457 SS. You should show the process you used to coat and size them.
Just spay them evenly with John Deere Graphite coating and size them like normal: www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deere-Graphite-Lubricant-TY25797.html
Could these be shot from the upcoming Texan cf .50 with a sabot? Do sabots harm the Barrell or do they recommend against it simply due to fouling?
Do they have these in 357
Challenger. .457 with power valve. I need some of these. 600fpe
Just getting into big bore airgun. I also live In Traverse and have a couple questions about where your filling your tanks at and your long distance range spots. They look familiar from where I hunt at. I am planing on hunting this year with a 357 hatsan carnivore.
Go to SCUBA North
Meat punching sounds like something steven seagal does in his 80s movies.
Steel is significantly harder than a shoulder blade don't you think? Do you really think that you will get the same results in bone impact as steel then?
Steel? You mean lead right? With big bore Airguns I’ve found double lung shots are better than high shoulder shots. Better blood trails.
@@UpNorthAirGunner no the steel gong 13.37 in. You say that bone hits give similar expansion as shooting at steel gong. But i do not think so, would therefore have been super interesting to get a shot to meat and bone, 🙃
jean-pierre hemmingsson ah.... when these hit bone they won’t open up, they will just deform. Watch some of my more recent ballistics gel testing this ammo. Wicked results, but just poor penetration out of an Airgun. I would only shoot these with Deer with 50 yards and closer shots perfectly broadside.
I would gladly field test for you on large Florida hogs. I average 26 yards.
Always wondered what tungsten would do . Obviously be more towards the penetration end of things but it’s heavier than lead.
Expensive though. How about solid gold hollow points 😂
Imagine tungsten might destroy your barrel!
Interesting. I got a talontune heavy hammer and spring for my condor. Thinking a .257 barrel ? I'll run down your power mods. Nice looking rifle.
That's awesome! Could you try them out to maybe a hundred yards and see how they perform?
I would like to try these for bear.
WOW 😮
Do they make these anymore? I can’t find any
Just wondering how much these would expand out of a Evanix Rex P .50
You mentioned that the pushed thru the sizer super slippery. What is a sizer? Sorry if that's a dumb question
Here is a video that explains what a bullet sizer is: ruclips.net/video/rhQAzV4KeDs/видео.html
Could you use a wide from .45 cal muzzle loader bullets to bring the size up ?
That would defeat the purpose. The increase contact with the lands would increase friction and lower velocity greatly.
Question i Text Airforce this is what they say. Good Day,
We only recommend compressed air or dry nitrogen gas for warranty purposes.
Thank you, So with Helium. The gun will resist the more pressure from helium. It will cost any damage. Let me know. And have ya done accuracy on the gun with helium
That was interesting what exactly did they coat that with to get it up to the right diameter.
John Deer Graphite Coating for agriculture equipment
Hi there
Very good video and very good explanation.
I have a Texan 457.
I live in Caracas Venezuela.
You have the possibility of 50 bullets for me.
Exclusive use of Deer Hunting
Just tell me please what would be the price.
Thank you for your help.
You have a happy Easter
Excuse me if i bother you
I'm amazed at those numbers! $1.99/lb for pork shoulder!?!? How did you do that?? ;-p
Ha! All for the sake of airgun research!
Body ya have to see this 👉🏽 Airforce Texan Lss.45 Cal - A quit Powerhouse of an Airgun! 👈🏽. Ya have to do a video of this with NITROGEN. the barrel will be best for NITROGEN 🧸👊🏽
Nitrogen is just a dryer gas with a slight and I mean VERY slight difference in molecular density that will have very little affect on velocity. Now with Helium.... that is a game changer. Check out the few videos I have done with Helium.
I want to buy some
Would you be willing to get several of those Lehigh's made and sell them?
Chris- any luck utilizing your secret system to enlarge the diameter of the projectiles?
I actually tried the powder coating you recommended and I can't get the temperature right on this little toaster oven. Waiting on another batch of slugs to hopefully not screw up. I did come across another method and that was just to load one with NOTHING on it and put a foam earplug pushed in behind it. It seals perfectly and is a much easier approach to the sealing issue.
@@UpNorthAirGunner When you look at the rifling dimensions of the barrel, and the dimensions of the slug you're using, there's a problem. Even though the rifling (the lands) may engage the slug, the grooves do not. There's a .003" gap around the circumference of the slug. In relative terms, when you put 3000 psi behind it, the gap is immense. The higher the pressure, the smaller the orifice needed to release to allow it to escape. So I do understand why you would use an earplug. It's indicative of using wadding behind a musket ball/slug. However, I think the pressure behind the earplug will actually blow past it through the small gaps around the slug where it's not contacting the grooves of the rifling. If the pressure behind the slug isn't concentric, and it's already at a disadvantage because it's only engaging the lands and not the grooves, it will definitely effect long range accuracy.
If you want to experiment with powder coating, use cheap lead slugs to experiment first. Especially if you cast your own. You can re-melt them and scrape off the powder coat as slag when they liquefy. But by doing that you can refine the process. Watch elvis ammo on RUclips. He preheats his slugs at 140 degrees for 4 minutes, then tumbles them. When they are nice and warm, the powder clings to them much, much better. Especially the Eastwood powder you bought. Also, tumble them for a while. Don't be scared to let them go for 30 minutes in the tumbler. See if you can thicken up the powder coat that way....
If that fails, there IS another way. You can buy the HF powder coating system that uses high voltage, low amperage to positively charge your powder and negatively charge your slugs. The you can methodically control the thickness of the coating.
Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater Chris. Play around with cheap slugs until you find what works. It might take days or weeks of experimentation. Use a caliper to measure the diameter before and after the coating to see if you can achieve desired thickness.
@@trinitymaker5833 I just need to practice powder coating on some cheap slugs I have laying around to get the temperature right. Thanks for the tips!
@@UpNorthAirGunner you can also try an old black powder trick and wrap a layer of paper around the slug to fill in gap
great info. perhaps in the future just a tiny bit less talking🙏🏻
Ya I get yappy sometimes! Thanks for watching!
First off no sir no sir an no sir I belive it should be archery period not even crossbows during archery
Sorry HELIUM I mean new for 2019 Lss.
Has no one bought a mold and mass produced these. Ill bet you in 1 year u could make enough money back to pay off mold 3x over and buy a few more high end pcp guns
Its the cost of hunting nowadays its not affordable in the least thats why hunting has declined imo
I not sure your stats on hunting pressure is correct. But, the same slope came into the hunting season in Colorado years ago. Well it took a bite out of the bow season, 4th week had modern so called primitive weapons in the woods with bow hunters. Same with cross bows, now this. Not saying it is not a noble cause in your mind or reality, just another application of high tech on animals. The the one thing I do know, the pressure for elk tag is Wyoming is astronomical and gets more expensive each year. And more yahoos trying to shoot elk at ridiculous ranges with piss weak 6.5 Creedmores. They leave wounded animals behind and go shoot at another one. Hunting is not for everyone. Noting personal, just hate all the technology brought to bear against game animals, not about making it easier.
Why is he shooting towards a house and cars ?? This is a very irresponsible way to showcase any shooting device. Always use basic safety especially on video. Crazy 2.00 min mark
This will get your trolling juices flowing even more... During hunting season I shot a Deer in the exact same spot to the right side of the house.
Try them on a hog !!!!
