Hi Emmy! Thank you for sharing this recipe - thank you for showcasing Twinkies! Fun fact - all Twinkies are produced in only one bakery in the US, and I work there, it's a wonderful place.
The last pot luck that had a Jello salad served was in 1985. I’ve never seen one since. The jello salad (which was very good btw) was made by a woman in her late 40´s. Everyone loved it. It had walnuts, miracle whip, ( the use of miracle whip and walnuts was enough for me to tell she wasn’t a Southerner) I think it had seedless grapes, bananas, tangerine sections and pineapple chunks. All fresh. I remember it being dark red. Geez, I haven’t thought about this in years. 3 years later people were making potato salad out of tiny red potatoes in their jackets with sour cream and dill. I haven’t seen that for years either.
@@sonogabri1 Hi. while Red 40 was banned in some european countries ( Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Sweden), the EFSA overturned this decision in 2008 and the dye has been used in food and medicinal products throughout the entirety of europe since, only marketed under the name "Allura Red" and E129 so as not to scare consumers with the scary red40 name.
Forgive me if someone has said this already, but after watching, I feel like the whipped cream-and-cherry mixture could've used some unflavored gelatin mixed in to stabilize it. When you were lifting the springform off, I was watching that top layer sag because it was just...whipped cream with a liquid (cherries) added. I know you said it had been out of the refrigerator for a bit, but... I still think a tablespoon of unflavored gelatin would've helped the pie hold up a bit better. All that said, it did look appealing! Thanks for everything, Emmy! Longtime watcher, first time commenter! OH! And my favorite pie is chocolate brandy pecan!
Yep, instant puddings are thickened with modified cornstarch & gelatinized starch (despite its name it doesn’t contain gelatin), and some also contain gums (like carrageenan and alginates)
I know your video is about pies, but I just had to tell you something. What I wanted to tell you is I used the way you separate the egg white from the yolk and it is so much easier than any other way I've tried so Thank You. I made a cake for my brother who has been fighting cancer and had to put in 4 egg whites. Putting the eggs in a bowl one at a time and then reaching in with my hand and taking out the yolk was so easy. I am so happy that you demonstrated your way of separating the egg yolk from the white.
A great fun recipe! A good 4 hours sitting in the fridge would have helped this stand up to being unmolded. But, I do understand wanting to get to the pie quickly. It was very pretty! It would be very cute for Easter, too
A great stabilizer for whipped cream is cream of tartar. Probably would have helped here. Maybe a bit more whipping as well to make it more firm, didn't look like stiff peaks to me.
The whipping cream wasn't whipped quite long enough. To stabilize: Gradually add in 1/4 c. powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1/4 tsp cream of tartar to make stiffened peaks.
My favorite pies are my mother's blackberry pie, and her pumpkin pie. She passed away last August, and this holiday season is going to be lonely without her.
i know what you mean, my father passed away the day before thanksgiving a few years ago, this year i'm glad thanksgiving is later in the month and misses his anniv date. it was his favorite holiday because of all the delicious food! i'm sorry for your loss.
Since you didn't use the entire pudding mix, I would mix the rest of the packet into the whipped cream before whipping it to give it more stability. I was so nervous watching it sag! What a cute little pie, though! It sounds delicious
I was thinking something like that as well! My thoughts were splitting the cherry whipped cream (like 2/3 & 1/3 or even 1/2 & 1/2) and adding the rest of the pudding mix to the 2/3 portion so you still have the really airy fluffiness of the remaining unadulterated cherry cream to put on the very top, but it’s only a thin layer so it’s more stable
Seems like more of a banana split trifle to me lol my family has requested it for Thanksgiving so we will see how it goes!! Also my favorite pie is lemon merengue or key lime ❤
One of the Hallmark Holiday movies, had a part that there was grand party of a wealthy couple, which the mother had this fancy cake that she claimed to make but actually bought it. It got damaged, so the daughter & old boyfriend rescued the mother by making a fancy layered cake composed entirely of layered twinkles covered with a frosting. It was a hit, which some loved but couldn't place the flavor of the cake. The twinkle pie, reminds of an Americanized version of tiramisu. I'm sure Emi wanted to glam up her twinkie pie or twinkie layer cake, she's do an awesome job how to make elevate up with a few tweaks here and there. Not bad. I wonder if Emi could whip up one for lactose intolerance guests.
Wow. This looks so good. The Twinkies of today are nothing like they were when I was growing up. They were so good back then. Thank you for sharing this recipe. 💜
It looks like this pie could benefit from being in the freezer for a while before serving, just so the pudding and cream gets very cold and almost turn into a slightly melty ice cream. And as someone who uses whipped heavy cream (we're talking 40% fat content) for cakes and desserts, I also think you could have whipped the cream a bit more, it looked rather runny to me. When I make cake for birthdays and such, I used whipped heavy cream both for covering and piping, so you can probably imagine how stiff you can actually whip it without it starting to turn into butter. I tend to go by owl eyes in the bowl, when the owl eyes (the pattern made by the whisks of a hand mixer looks like owl eyes) keeps its shape and don't sag instantly and also keeps its shape pretty well when giving the bowl a gentle tap against the counter, your cream is perfect for piping and cake covering because it will keep its structural integrity very well
I remember watching characters in a Hallmark movie make a cake out of Twinkies once, and I have wanted to do it ever since. Watching you make this pie has made me so happy, and given me a great place to start
Some ideas to boost the flavor with the same ingredients: 1. Half of the butter (melted), plus the other half of the butter, browned... in the crust. If you have a stainless steel frothing mug, it's better than microwaving, since you have more control over the heat, and it doesn't take much longer. 2. Toasted (then cooled+crumbled) Nilla wafer crumbs (topping).
Thank you for always being the wonderful human you are. It is very comforting to know that I always have a kind, silly person to throw up on my tv when the nights are particularly rough. We love you Emmy💜💜
This feels like a trifle with a bottom crust. I'm also seeing ways to chang3e it up and use my own sponge and stuff to make something similar. Thank you for the video!
Looks yummy! I’d add more pudding mix to the same volume of milk, and a little confectioner’s sugar to the whipped cream. The extra gelatin and corn starch would help with stability. Also, I’d use strawberry purée instead of cherry. Strawberries and bananas go so well together.
I would us cool whip topping instead of whipped cream in this recipe. It is more stable. Also, maybe put the rest of the instant pudding in the pink part to stabilize it. I will definitely be trying this recipe! Looks delicious.
Hi Emmy, I would love to see you make focaccia bread. Maybe with some home made garlic butter or roasted cherry tomatoes and rosemary on top. 😋 I don’t think you’ve ever made that, if so forgive me but it just looks so so good and would love to see that. ☺️
Sorry to be a "well, actually" person, but I think you'd appreciate it: Instant pudding doesn't have gelatin in it. The thickener is modified cornstarch.
3:08 Fun fact. There is a reason cherries smell like almonds. They’re in the same family. They’re all stone fruits, along with peaches, plums, apricots, etc. Think about what is inside a peach pit- looks a lot like an almond. Some things we think of as ‘almond’ flavoured, are actually from apricot kernels - such as Ameretto!
But we're talking industrial maraschino cherries though... They smell like almonds because there actually is almond flavoring in the liquid they're soaking in. Unpeeled cherries barely even have a smell in their natural state
But, I can't say that I didn't love them, my parents owned the corner candy store when I was growing up, my treat at the end of the night was a little carton of chocolate milk and a package of Twinkies. 😁 Trust me when I tell you, I earned it.
I think this could also be done in a baking dish, if you don't have a spring form pan. Might call for a little more creative layering, but it would work.
i would add the pudding to whipping cream , or add little bit of gelatin into whipping cream. those both should stabilize the whipping cream and stop sliding
In arab culture we make so many desserts using ready cakes or biscuits. Most of our desserts are made that way we rarely do anything from scratch it saves so much time and effort and they always end up tasting amazing 😻
She didn’t set enough cherries aside. You need a few for snacking. ;-) I think for something like this, a fake whipped cream (Cool Whip) would work better. The whipped cream seemed a little under-whipped for stiff peaks and got a bit deflated mixing in the blended cherries. A little cream of tartar helps stabilize whipped cream too. Refrigerated to almost frozen might help too.
The cherries smelled like almond extract for a reason! Cherries & almonds are related, and share some of the same flavor components. In fact, cherry based recipes often include almond extract
Ohhhh my goodness,😮, I’m going to make this pie 🥧 for thanksgiving ❤I think it will be a hit!!!!!!!! I had to send this video to my husband and Daughter. I’ll edit this post after Thanksgiving ❤
🫢 thank goodness for butter, milk, bananas, & sugar. In the meantime, I’ll take my Twinkies straight up, hold the ‘nilla. 👏🏽 for reviving memories of adolescent snacks 🙏🏽
This reminds of a Twinkie dessert I tried making ages ago in college with twinkies, Cool Whip and strawberries & strawberry jello. That one was definitely sickly sweet and not well-balanced 😂 Kinda cool to see that this one was actually good. I love that it looks like a Dr. Seuss dessert!
I wonder if slightly upping the amount of pudding mix or perhaps popping the whole pie into the freezer rather than the fridge might help with the texture of the pie setting up a bit more so that it holds it shape better? The flavors definitely sound yummy together though, almost like a banana split! 🙂 I bet a little bit of fudge or ganache, with or without some chopped nuts on top, would make it even more banana-split-esque. :) My favorite pie is usually butterscotch or strawberry rhubarb, but I'm also a big fan of coconut cream and banana cream, especially in a pie shake.
The FDA defined Maraschino Cherries in 1940, they are "cherries which have been died red, infused with sugar and packed in a sugar syrup flavored with oil of bitter almonds or a similar flavor." The red dye has been changed a several times (1960, 1965, 1976, 2010) but in 1975 FDA added "if artificial bitter almond flavor or any synthetic flavor is used, the product must be labeled artificially flavored." There are also the abomination known as green maraschino cherries.
Okay I was just looking up ambrosia salad recipes and I couldn’t find any on your channel. Forgive me if I missed it, but I think it’d be interesting to see you do one for your retro recipes. Also, never been a big fan of twinkies, but this looks pretty good.
When I was was sick and in the hospital for 5 weeks, I wasn't allowed to eat but got nutrients through an IV. All I could think about was my Mother-in-law's Lemon Meringue Pie! Unfortunately she has never given the recipe out!
That pie admittedly does look fire, something I'll definitely have to make for funsies sometime [and share with my friends :)] Eta- Favorite pie is a tie between Rhubarb and peach
Is there an alternative for the cherries? Because I'm allergic to red food coloring... Because this sounds like something I would like to make ....but not died doing it 😊
That would also be lovely with pineapple in the middle instead of banana and coconut in the pudding mix. You could do lots of swaps! We have something called Angel Delight in 🇬🇧 I haven’t seen pudding jello - so I will try a 🇬🇧 version - thanks Emmy
Twinkies were delicious when I was a kid back in the 1970's. They don't taste nearly as good now as they did back then. A good substitute for the twinkies would be ladyfingers. Ladyfingers are small long narrow cakes, they are delicious with whipped cream and berries.
My favorite pie is the modem version of Mincemeat pie, using only fruit. I have enjoyed it the old fashioned way with meat, but I prefer it with just fruit.
I haven't had it for years, but my favorite pie was walnut cream. KFC used to have it to buy. You could buy it by the slice or a whole pie. I've looked for a recipe for years that sounds like what I remember. The last time I bought Oberon from KFC was in the late 80s in Idaho. I have developed an allergy to walnuts now, so I would need to substitute pecans. I would love to find the recipe or a recipe that looks and tastes like this pie.
Share with me your favorite pie!🥧 I'll go first: strawberry rhubarb.🥰
Lemon Meringue!
And Pecan!
French Silk
Coconut cream
Pumpkin, followed by apple
Hi Emmy! Thank you for sharing this recipe - thank you for showcasing Twinkies! Fun fact - all Twinkies are produced in only one bakery in the US, and I work there, it's a wonderful place.
That’s so cool!
This dessert feels very retro. Like something that would be served back in the 1950s.
I would have said the mid 1960 though early 80´s
I thought that, too. It has a retro vibe to it.
The last pot luck that had a Jello salad served was in 1985. I’ve never seen one since. The jello salad (which was very good btw) was made by a woman in her late 40´s. Everyone loved it. I haven’t seen that for years either.
It looks like it should be on the set of Edward Scissorhands.
I think "twinkie pie" would be a great endearment. I'm going to call my cat this when she is being particularly cute.
YES, I love it! Too cute.🥰
As someone who doesn't eat gelatin, and by checking the label. JELLO instant pudding does not have gelatin, it's thicker is "modified food starch"
i thought so !! i make the chocolate cook-able one for pies...never saw jello in the ingredient panel.
This reminds me of the best parts of Midwest cooking, taking the most processed ingredients ever and throwing it together and calling it 'cooking'
However, the red dye in the cherries worries me. Why is it still allowed in American "cooking" ?
@@sonogabri1 Hi. while Red 40 was banned in some european countries ( Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Sweden), the EFSA overturned this decision in 2008 and the dye has been used in food and medicinal products throughout the entirety of europe since, only marketed under the name "Allura Red" and E129 so as not to scare consumers with the scary red40 name.

Agreed! The sagging made me really anxious 😂 i think the whipped cream could have been whipped a little bit longer too perhaps?
Great idea!
Chocolate brandy pecan pie sounds so yummy!
She didn't use all of the pudding mix, and I thought it would be used in the cherry whip for that reason.
Pumpkin pie here. 🎉
@@DanMan869 Store bought pies are frozen in pie plates.❤️
Burnt Sugar Pie!!! Recipe from my great great grandmother and I'm 71!!!
Ooooh, I've never had that pie before.
Please share the recipe if you have it.❤ I would love to try making it.😊
Yes please had it once before I remember a butterscotch taste
Instant pudding mix doesn't contain gelatin. The thickener in instant pudding mix is cornstarch.
Yes I was a little confused when she said it had gelatin. I always thought it was cornstarch or some sort of starch that made it thick.
Yep, instant puddings are thickened with modified cornstarch & gelatinized starch (despite its name it doesn’t contain gelatin), and some also contain gums (like carrageenan and alginates)
4:15 New word of the day, and by far the lewdest thing I’ve heard come out of Emmy’s mouth😂

If you let the Twinkies stale a bit and then soaked them with some rum you would have a Twinkiemisu.
The Bananus quip cracked me up!!!
I had to go back and relisten to what she said. 😂

That looks so interesting. I have several favorite pies, pumpkin, coconut cream, rhubarb and peach are my absolute favorites.
Sounds gloriously scrumptious to me!
My mom’s coconut cream pie with toasted meringue is probably my absolute favorite, but a close second is my Grandma’s pumpkin pie!

I like different pies at different times of year. Most of the time it's French Silk.
Caramel pie is definitely my fave ❤
Blueberry and pecan pie side by side!! 💙🤎 a little bit of each in a bite 😍 its not the holiday season until I’ve had that bite.
Personally I love a savory pastry! Like an onion tart with endives hmmm or any quiche or cheesy pie😋
I would add gelatin to the heavy cream cherry mix and maybe a bit more to the vanilla and heavy cream mix to make it all stay together better.

I think this could also be done in a baking dish, if you don't have a spring form pan. Might call for a little more creative layering, but it would work.
Twinkie Pie was my nickname in college
i would add the pudding to whipping cream , or add little bit of gelatin into whipping cream. those both should stabilize the whipping cream and stop sliding
That looks delicious!

O my goodness! That looks soooo good. 🍒
In arab culture we make so many desserts using ready cakes or biscuits. Most of our desserts are made that way we rarely do anything from scratch it saves so much time and effort and they always end up tasting amazing 😻
It reminds me of a desert sold in one of the supermarket chains when I lived in Northern Indiana called an Atomic Banna Split.
She didn’t set enough cherries aside. You need a few for snacking. ;-)
I think for something like this, a fake whipped cream (Cool Whip) would work better.

Pecan pie or banana cream pie are my favorite. Pretty much everywhere here in the south those are the favorites or at least the most common.
"Bananus" 😩

This is so fun! We usually freeze it!
This is a grade school child's delight! (But I, as most adults (whether they would admit it or not) would still like it.)
I think it could be in individual serving cups, or even as a cupcake cups. Might be a good frozen dessert too, e except for brown bananas.
I wonder if slightly upping the amount of pudding mix or perhaps popping the whole pie into the freezer rather than the fridge might help with the texture of the pie setting up a bit more so that it holds it shape better? My favorite pie is the modem version of Mincemeat pie, using only fruit. I have enjoyed it the old fashioned way with meat, but I prefer it with just fruit.
Twinkie tiramisu is pretty yummy!
Awesome as always thanks ❤
I haven't had it for years, but my favorite pie was walnut cream. KFC used to have it to buy. You could buy it by the slice or a whole pie. I've looked for a recipe for years that sounds like what I remember. The last time I bought Oberon from KFC was in the late 80s in Idaho. I have developed an allergy to walnuts now, so I would need to substitute pecans. I would love to find the recipe or a recipe that looks and tastes like this pie.
Favorite pie is key lime with cherry closing in at 2nd.🥧
My favorite pies are apple and chocolate French silk 🤍🥧
