exactly they could have told him to take off the lights and disable the Siren, hell my boss runs a Chevy 4x4 with a push bumper and has red and yellow on the back of his rig and that legit in Shasta county here Californian.
The whole point is to see if he has used it to stop people though. The lights may be the only thing illegal on the car itself, but if someone came forward and said that car stopped me and the driver looks like this, with an accurate description of the driver, then more charges follow, impersonating an officer, attempted kidnapping (if he threatened to arrest someone, or handcuffed someone and released them). The point isn't making a big deal out of the car, it's about finding out if the driver should even be on the streets.

Nick Flamand, It was my Demo vehicle. All equipment installed was done professionally in our shop to display our expertise. This was an absolute witch hunt. A bored officers imagination of being a hero cost me not only more than $8,000 of impound fees but affected the business I worked very hard to build from the ground up. I have always supported lew enforcement(all decals on this vehicle were memorial decals remembering officers that served and lost their lives on duty). This is a situation that should not have never been allowed. kinda stupid to have impounded the car before they had proof he impersonated a cop. Most places it's legal to have all that on the car as long as you don't light them up on the road. I had a similar setup on one of my previous cars and only used it in car shows or meets.
don't forget kids, the government HATES competition! but seriously, having lights and a push bar on the car shouldn't indicate he's impersonating a cop. as long as he's not using it on public roads and pulling people over in one, then he should be just fine to put that stuff on his car.
Very interesting. I think in Texas, you can have all the police equipment you want in/on your car or truck, as long as you don't activate it while on a public roadway (or maybe even while it can be seen from the roadway). If the car doesn't have the word "POLICE" on an emblem or decal, I don't think you're impersonating police until you turn on the red & blue lights and/or siren.
At first when Bellvue was mentioned, I thought it was Washington, then 'constable' was mentioned and thought "Who uses that term in modern times?" then I heard that it's in Pennsylvania and saw the rear plate and totally explained it.
I can't believe this vehicle was impounded. Those lights are simply a ticket in Ohio. That's the only crime committed. Minor misdemeanor. He should have just used amber lights.
those lights are not illegal unless turned on or have a blue or red lens. but they are clear and only red and blue when activated. So as long as he did not turn them on while on a public road it is totally legal. that's why they want to find if he actually pulled anyone over. otherwise there is no real charge and he can beat it in court.
That is total BS!! He did not have the lights on and said he was not a cop so no crime was committed. If he was riding up and down the roads with the lights and siren on then it would be different look how many cars they have on craigslist that comes with a roof light bar better arrest them also!!
Just curious, if the man was refueling at the gas station, what authority did they have to seize his car? The lights do not display red/blue when off so I'm not sure what suspicion they would legally have to stand by. There are literally hundreds of thousands of tax-cabs and privately owned ex-police vehicles on the road....
I can see the news story now... shot and killed for talking on the cellphone, failing to follow an officer's orders while trying to find out if the car and the cop are real... yea right...

When I did my Mad Max car I usually keep a cover over the dash mounted blue light. Saves a lot of trouble. Now as to what was on that car? I typically suggest to upfitters that they use colors that are non police in nature. Have an ex cop car daily driver with amber colored Hella 550 fog lights on it. Saves even more headaches cause they don’t look the part
In New York you can't even have the word POLICE in any form on a vehicle that's not an active police department vehicle. In the 80s I had a CVPI that even had the words Police Interceptor at the bottom of the front Windows. The factory put them there.
Depends on the state, in mine for instance it's illegal to have blue lights installed in any vehicle that's on the road and isn't a police car. If you wanna be safe, amber/white lights should be okay to have installed.
same thing pretty much, ford police interceptor is just a bland term for ford fleet law enforcement vehicle(s). it's just that the news is vague sometimes, especially when it comes to cars.
It actually is a Police Interceptor or P71. It literally says 2011 Police Interceptor on my registration. P71 is simply the VIN designation for the CVPI although it was changed to P7B for the 2009 - 2011 model years, which is what mine is. What's weird about this whole story is the dude getting his car impounded in the first place. If he was honestly trying to look like a cop, he wouldn't put that stupid aftermarket Ford badge on the trunk - no Police Department would ever do that. So if he was honestly trying to fool even the keenest observer into thinking he was a real cop, why put stupid shit on his car that he knows police department don't do? I also find it strange they impound his car and then ask the public for evidence after the fact? If those lenses are clear, shouldn't it just be a fix-it ticket? Unless he was using them on public roads, I don't see the problem. The cop even said he simply saw him parked at a gas station. I took all that shit off my car; the push bumper, spotlights, antenna's, etc. not because they were illegal but because this is the exact shit I didn't want to deal with. Granted, that dudes car is setup but still... this isn't minority report.
If he is not pulling people over or bothering anyone and he is not using the lights on public roads these cops should leave him alone. He could have built this vehicle for show purposes or as a tribute and may not actually be doing anything all that wrong.
Alex The lights are only illegal if they are turned on in road use. The K-9 plate signifies nothing, and neither does anything else. Those cops just had blue balls and wanted to be jerks.
here in PA it was all legal, idk why it was taken this route, they would just say to not use them, your aloud to drive EX-police intercepters, there’s a few people that I know that drive them, push bar, spot lights, red/blue lights, everything exterior wise, and also a few still have the center console, cage, even the plastic seat in the back
From what I see here, he said no I'm not a cop I'm not a constable therefore he did not identify himself as police officer therefore it is not impersonation as long as the lights and siren wasn't actually on then you can't charge him with anything for all you know this could just be a rally car or a show car
How can you not know that an actual law enforcement officer may spot you? Especially if you have a car decked out like one of their own. Hmm. The plate will give you away. Law enforcement here in Tampa Fl have a specific yellow plate for fleet vehicles.
Yeah not anymore 😂 the first thing people look for in old dirty vics is any lights but that's rare these days and you usually see a skinny twig teenager or some old fat guy which both don't match descriptions of your common police officer.
That fake police intersector doesn't have the correct Pennsylvania license plate. Most of their police cars and cruisers from the Pennsylvania State Police would have a license plate that says "Municipal". Not a regular license plate with "visitpa.com"
i se so many police 🚔 car privat with no sign police on his car only some light inside and the guy wearing uniform normal and stop cars on the hwy and street i thought if hes coming to me with privat car police probably i wont stop im right tell me ??
This a lame. Thought this was a free country. Wtf. If he uses it then it’s illegal. If it’s just at car shows no harm. This is a waste of tax money. Seems like the guy has pride in police by stickers. And the police spit on him. I feel for the guy that lost his car over a jerk officer. Sad 😢. I hope this guy gets a good attorney and sues the shit out of that police station. It’s not illegal to have them. It’s highly illegal to use the, on public roads though. Thought this was USA. Why are we acting like USSR?
This is why the law says that traffic police cars must be marked except for under cover detectives to protect the public....but police departments ignore this law
In every area I know, an unmarked car can be the one certifying your speed, but only a marked car can pull you over. The unmarked car will radio in marked car but the ticket will be written by the unmarked car law enforcement officer.
How did they know they were red and blue? Also, if it was something besides that Crown Vic he was driving and not a charger or something, no one would have even noticed.
Nope, I'm pretty sure if anything, blue is the only light that's illegal to have installed. Red is okay in quite a few states as long as it's facing the rear
I had a 2009 Crown Victoria, black with silver doors an ex police car, it had no warning lights on it but the spot light. Local police gave me more trouble than it was worth so I. Sold it.
Shouldn't it be the other way around? Agreed it is not illegal but impounding the car and Tring to figure what if any crime he did commit after the fact is disgusting.
Hmmm. "Officer noticed the vehicle with lights on it" -> Plenty of vehicles with clear lightbars, etc. Are we to now assume all of these vehicles are impersonating police officers? "Driver was not wearing a police uniform" -> Plenty of plainclothes officers, detectives, officers off shift with take-home cars. Combined with the above, not really reasonable suspicion. "I asked him if he was a police officer" -> Driver is not obligated to answer that question. "Police say driver has a criminal background" -> Sounds like discrimination "Maybe he has things like a badge, etc." -> So now all police halloween costumes are illegal too. Guy needs to lawyer up immediately. Unless the officers witnessed him using the equipment on the car or someone reports him of doing so, I don't see what grounds they have to impound the vehicle unless the driver willingly let the officers search it.
Agreed. Walking up and asking him to incriminate himself is a bit odd. Besides, him not wearing a police uniform is a plus, is it not? Further proof he wasn't impersonating a police officer. Asking the public to give them evidence after the fact is very strange. I owned a 2004 black P71 with blacked out windows but I didn't have a single piece of equipment in the interior or any exterior lights. Literally just left over antenna's, dual spotlights, and the pushbar - that's it, and I still got pulled over without probable cause easily two or three times a week. They wouldn't even have an excuse ready. They would walk up and I'd asked them why they pulled me over and they would stutter through some stupid excuse like, "Ummm you were going a bit too fast on the blvd." It was really disgusting. I own a 2011 CVPI now and took all the shit off because I didn't want to deal with being pulled over for no reason. I just like the car. I should be able to drive the fuckin thing without being pulled over for no reason. If they caught me with my tinted front windows up, I wouldn't complain at all. If the stop is reasonable - no problem. It's the cowards who think they can stop whoever they want that really chap my ass.
Ward413 Now for the sake of being impartial I will say that the officer didn't seem to do anything wrong and had every right to ask the motorist questions in a consensual stop... but people please, know your rights.

I took all that shit off my car; the push bumper, spotlights, antenna's, etc. not because they were illegal but because this is the exact shit I didn't want to deal with. Granted, that dudes car is setup but still... this isn't minority report.
It's a CVPI. Crown Victoria Police interceptor. It is a Ford. IE= Ford police interceptor with the P71 package.
I own a 2008 and my title says ford police interceptor
If he is not pulling people over or bothering anyone and he is not using the lights on public roads these cops should leave him alone. He could have built this vehicle for show purposes or as a tribute and may not actually be doing anything all that wrong.
Only things illegal on this car are the red and blue lights and the parking ID everything else is legal to have.
Alex The lights are only illegal if they are turned on in road use. The K-9 plate signifies nothing, and neither does anything else. Those cops just had blue balls and wanted to be jerks.
There are too many lights, I would know right away that something is off.
here in PA it was all legal, idk why it was taken this route, they would just say to not use them, your aloud to drive EX-police intercepters, there’s a few people that I know that drive them, push bar, spot lights, red/blue lights, everything exterior wise, and also a few still have the center console, cage, even the plastic seat in the back
take that car and put it in service ASAP
From what I see here, he said no I'm not a cop I'm not a constable therefore he did not identify himself as police officer therefore it is not impersonation as long as the lights and siren wasn't actually on then you can't charge him with anything for all you know this could just be a rally car or a show car
How can you not know that an actual law enforcement officer may spot you? Especially if you have a car decked out like one of their own. Hmm. The plate will give you away. Law enforcement here in Tampa Fl have a specific yellow plate for fleet vehicles.
I drive a retired Crown Vic. They are great cars. People tend to show a little more respect when they see you coming.
Yeah not anymore 😂 the first thing people look for in old dirty vics is any lights but that's rare these days and you usually see a skinny twig teenager or some old fat guy which both don't match descriptions of your common police officer.
"Unmarked" police car.
Is blue and white lights Illegal? If so what about just white or just blue
Varies from state to state.
now they have a new and free police car to their fleet
Did James Dewitte say: SGT SGT!!! Ha!
Why not sell it to a police department elsewhere?
Lock him up and seize the car. Please pass on! If your not sure if it's a cop don't stop and call 911.
UPDATE?
That fake police intersector doesn't have the correct Pennsylvania license plate.
Most of their police cars and cruisers from the Pennsylvania State Police would have a license plate that says "Municipal". Not a regular license plate with "visitpa.com"
I hate people who drive these cars always get my hart rate up for no reason 😂😂
THESE CRIMINALS ARE SCARY AND NEED TO BE LOCKED UP!!!
Having a vehicle that looks like a cop car is not a crime
LOL even the cops couldn't tell
Atleast they get free lights
Is he never identified himself as a police officer then why is there a problem?
What's wrong with a computer stand in the car? Didn't think that was illegal
Only the lights are illegal.
In my city the law in is you can have lights on your car you just can't drive with them on
Take off the illegal bits and give the guy his car back.
It's not illegal, I've got one... try and take my car, I fucking dare you!
i se so many police 🚔 car privat with no sign police on his car only some light inside and the guy wearing uniform normal and stop cars on the hwy and street i thought if hes coming to me with privat car police probably i wont stop im right tell me ??
Just give the poor guy a job even as meter maid already.
Well I hope the Police officers kept it !
He pulled me over a lot of times
They are in a nanny state thats why its such a big deal
its illegal everywhere to have red and blue lights on a car, not only in Penn.
Nope, I'm pretty sure if anything, blue is the only light that's illegal to have installed. Red is okay in quite a few states as long as it's facing the rear
Please provide sources to every jurisdiction on Earth indicating that law.
Why don't the police just use it instead of impounding it?
Wow that guy has to much time on his hands he needs help
If I was the arresting officer id say "thanks for your servic, but your tour of duty it over"
It looks pretty real except that bottom long lightbar...
looks like the one that tried to pull me over last year in girard PA last year
I had a 2009 Crown Victoria, black with silver doors an ex police car, it had no warning lights on it but the spot light. Local police gave me more trouble than it was worth so I. Sold it.
Impersonation is a misdemeanor and he will pay a fine, that is about all.
Impersination is a felony
Not illegal to have these things as long as you don't use them to impersonate.... that's why they are trying to figure out if he did or not
Shouldn't it be the other way around? Agreed it is not illegal but impounding the car and Tring to figure what if any crime he did commit after the fact is disgusting.
Blue lights mounted on a vehicle for use on public roadways is certainly not legal, even if they are not turned on.
The car does look convincing.
What about volunteer firefighters they can't have lights
"Police say driver has a criminal background" -> Sounds like discrimination
"Maybe he has things like a badge, etc." -> So now all police halloween costumes are illegal too.
KevinSun242 hahahha...dude, that comment about police officer costumes on halloween = straight laughing my ass off
I'm the owner. I own a legit Emergency Fleet Upfit shop that not one day is going to sell equipment, daily sells and installs this equipment. It was our demo vehicle and I was in the neighborhood on a friday night picking up my twins for the weekend from my ex. I did have a drinking problem in early years and I got a few dui close together and thats the criminal backround in which they speak of. But not in 2018 it has been 11 years since my last alcoholic beverage and worked my ass of to build the company that they almost destroyed.
