Hey everyone! The "200lb MONSTER" in the title refers to both the fish I lost. I saw the first one come up, nose to tail, and it was a trophy (hence my reaction when it threw the hook). I didn't see the second lost fish, but I've only felt a hookset like that once... you know when. The fish I DID catch probably came in at just 100lb, which is still really nice, but you best believe I'm going back for those monsters! Also... when I said I had never lost a gar on the hookset, I was specifically talking about my line breaking. That's the first gar to ever snap my line (probably an issue with the knot)
What a honey hole you've found! Glad to know there is a possibility you catch another breaking news sized fish. Can't wait to see what more this year brings for your channel and all the amazing catches that will take place. Love the videos as always!
Just found you man. Very nice to see that you are so caring towards the wildlife. Glad there are people out there like that still. God bless. Happy fishing
Impressed again im wanting you to come to the Mississippi Delta and Catch some Aligator Gar there and it's 25 minutes as well I love your show and The things you do for the Alligator Gar Thanks again for another awesome show and Catch.
WILDLIFE! What's going on man! Those first two gars got off but the one you landed was a monster! Great catch man and great episode I loved it! Keep on getting down!
You are an animal bro. Landing these alone is very impressive. You are methodical with your approach and I really admire and appreciate that. Happy fishing from a fellow Houston Texan. Would be rad to meet ya some day! 🤘🏻
Generally speaking, there's a pause in their movement after they run for a moment, and that's the fish readjusting the bait further into its mouth. I wait for that and let the fish pick up just a bit of speed as it moves off again and that's when I set the hook.
I would really like to see TPDW or whatever to class all gar species as game fish. They have all the stuff to be game fish-fun to catch, hard fight, and they get enormous
Awesome video as always! Hope your knee is healed up soon! Question: For someone in central Texas, How far south would we need to go to find bait like bullheads, talapia, cichlids, and fish of that variety? In the Belton/Stillhouse lake area, we just have the regular carp, shad, and bluegill varieties. no skipjack or anything like talapia to bait with, and I've heard Talapia makes awesome bait for gator gar, and you seem to catch them pretty frequently.
@@wildlifefishingshow Excellent! Thanks for the info! One other question, I am trying to decide on a new reel, and I was using the KastKing Rekon's, which work well but have the same problem your salis x reel did. On the hookset, they peel drag, and don't seem to have a solid hookset. How do you like your Shimano tekota for a solid initial hookset? It looks like it performs better.
@Matthew Irwin Tekota is amazing in every way, it just doesn't hold as much line. Probably 200 yards of 80lb braid. If you're comfortable with that, it's awesome.
@@wildlifefishingshow Thank you for the heads up! I may just keep them on my catfish rods then, and find a higher capacity reel for my gar rods. Thinking about the penn squalls or fathom II's. I hear lots of good things. Tight lines man, and thanks for responding! Keep up the great videos!
Gotta question someone can help me with do yall think store brought carp or talipa from fiesta or heb would work as good bait for gar because i can never caught bait
First of all, EXCELLENT video. I've never been gar fishing but live in Houston. Will gar not bite a bait with a wire leader? Seriously, I have no idea.
They definitely will bite a wire leader but there's always a small risk of losing the hook or a break off (which happened in this video). A kevlar braided leader isn't going to be as bad in the fish's mouth as it clears the hook over time.
fantastic video, i hope your are ok. let us know in future videos. i really enjoy you catching these monstors. do all alligator gar fish get that large or is it only that species native to florida?
Well there are seven species of gar and only the alligator gar (atractosteus spatula) that get this large. They are native to the Southern US and have the strongest populations in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. I appreciate the well wishes 🙏
@@wildlifefishingshow how's your knee? the reason i ask is my brother recently moved to souhtern ill. 20 miles from padducah kentucky. we were fishing mermet lake and got our first alligator gar. it was 5.5 lbs and very skinny with a long thin mouth. i don't think these gar in sthern ill get too big but im not sure.

Yeah man losing massive fish sucks as a starter gar fisherman i went out and got 6 bites and only hooked a alligator snapping turtle thinking i wasted my time. i went back home discouraged but every lost fish is a lesson learned and im gonna try next weekend and hope for a better result
I didn't see where it was coming from, but it seemed to be bleeding quite a bit. I saw a bloody spot in the mud where you landed it and once you put it back in the water it was bleeding pretty good. Did you notice if it was injured on a rock or something? I'm just curious since I wasn't able to see. I know it will survive just fine.
No, just a bit of blood from the hook set. Sometimes when you're unhooking them out of water, the blood will pool in that pouch and the first chance it gets to leave is when the fish gets back in the water, so it looks like more than it is.
@@wildlifefishingshow ahh I see. Because the debris in the bayous I presume. Free line with no weight? Does the bait stay in place or does it move? BTW I won't say the location but I enjoyed the video you did in my home town on the border of Texas and Louisiana. That made my day. If you ever go back I know that road is bad but if you go all the way to the end there's great fishing to be had on that jetty.
You can tell the story to your kids about the gar that blew out your knee. Of course, you'll need to stretch the monster's size up to 300 lbs since all good fish tales must be exaggerated.

Really dude, what does taking a carp for bait, have anything to do with respecting carp,I respect whitetail deer ,but if I shoot one during deer season does not make me disrespect deer.
I do respect carp. I'll also occasionally use smaller ones for bait. They're an introduced species over here and are incredibly well populated. If I catch one that I suspect to be anything more than a couple of years old, I wouldn't dare kill it. But the smaller ones are one of the alligator gar's favorite prey items. I'm just facilitating what is normally a natural process.

Shimano Tekota on a Denali Bottom Feeder medium heavy rod

It does, yeah. Just try to be sure it hasn't been cleaned (you want all that blood and oil). Stores like 99 Ranch Mart or Jusgo have a good selection.
What kind of bait caster you’re using bro , in need of a good reference

Shimano Tekota 600
