two things you forgot to mention was that you can see what letters have not been used on the keyboard below. I find this helpful when try to decide which letters to try next. Also if you get a green on a letter, be a consonant or vowel, does not mean that there might not be another one of those letters in the word. For example ladle ... has 2 "l"s and if you got the l in the first box you might not consider there could be another one in box 4. That caught me out a few weeks ago on a double "e" word. Good tutorial. P.S. My start word is raise and so far got a 100% solve rate. Love it.

Hi Claudia! I’m a massive fan and I just wanted to share my starting words which are:
    1. Adieu ( it has 4 vowels so it’s super helpful and quite a common consonant )
    2. irate / orate ( my personal fav is orate cos o is commoner than i and it has 3 vowels and 2 very common consonants )
    3. Opera ( it has the 3 most common vowels )
    4. Atone ( all of these letters are the top 6 most common letters - i not counted )
    5. Stoae ( 3 most common vowels and s and t are extremely common consonants
I hope this helped you and have a great day!

I always start with a word that has 3 consonants and 2 vowels, focusing on the letters: R, S, T, L, N, C and E, A, I, O. I always used coloured letters on the next line (hard mode) and have had much better results this way than when I used to start with vowel-heavy words.

Wordle looks like a game I used to play in the 70s called Mastermind which used colors instead of letters. There was a Super Mastermind model with 5 pegs in the row (the regular model had 4) and an extra color . We played with some pegs upside down, essentially doubling the number of colors, and also allowed doubles (2 or 3 of the same color) and blanks (essentially adding one more color). It was a challenge to get it in the 12 rows.

I just always start with 'ARIEL', 'YOUNG' and 'DEPTH' as my first 3 words. This move decides the fate of 14 letters.. you usually have a good idea by this point in the game and can start using your guesses to rearrange the letters you know will be in the word. If not, you can use 'MUCKS' to decide the fate of 4 more letters. There's a really high probability you have all the letters in the word right now and 2 more chances to spare, so you can guess the order of letters for the word

The other point is that letters guessed correctly can be in the word more than once e.g. you might guess PLAYS and the A is highlighted then you guess ATLAS which is the correct word. Or is that really obvious and didn’t need mentioning? If so....sorry🤭

A recent Wordle showed the pitfalls of a template like S_ILL. If it has taken you 2 or more guesses to get there, you have the potential to lose because so many words fit the template (SHILL, SKILL, SPILL, STILL). The better way to approach this, then, is to try a word constructed of the candidate letters (HKPT) so as to eliminate the bogus ones, e.g. guess KAPUT. Whichever of KPT becomes yellow shows the solution; if none of those become yellow the solution is the unused letter H.

    • @andhisband

Oops! Forgot about SWILL. So you might need to follow KAPUT with another flush-out word.

UPDATE: The version in the Apple store with all the ads may not be the official version. Furthermore, it is used primarily to track your activity on the web. It is true that NewYork Times purchased the website version.
This is now an app you can get in the Apple iTunes Store. However SAVE yourself the effort and frustration of downloading it. Evidently, very recently, the creator sold the game to the NewYork Times and they made it into an app. Problem is the ads greatly outnumber playing time. Almost every five letter combination you input will be followed by a minimum 30 second ad. You can be subjected to three ads for every round. Not in between rounds, multiple ads within the round. It’s horrific! I’m used to ads, and understand why they’re needed for a free app, but your concentration is broken repeatedly.

Great video! You explained it very clearly. After watching the first couple of mins of your vid, I tried it for myself for the very first time and got the word on my 3rd try and for my 2nd time got it on my 2nd try. My 2nd try I started with the word SLATE. Those letters are generally used during the final round of Wheel of Fortune.

According to 3Blue1Brown, CRANE is the optimal starter. I mostly hit par (4) or birdies (3) with it though the occasionally bogey or double bogey happens.

What you want to do us "Wheel of Fortune" this. Best starting word is S-T-O-R-E, or S-T-A-I-N. You knock out a whole lot of possibilities or you get letters to use.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL!! 1000👍!
I can't tell you how dense I was starting to feel... I finally found the game, but zilch on instructions/objective/rules. Just the board.
    Again THANK YOU. 😊

I always start with AIMED as it takes care of 3 vowels using hard mode. For the second guess, I try to use the 2-3 of the following consonants in a word: L, N, R, S, T. I'll add a O or U, if possible. I usually solve the puzzle in 3-4 guesses taking up five minutes or so..

Thank you for explaining WORDLE for me. I was about to play it, but wanted an explanation of the rules and how-to's. Now that I understand how to play, I realize what an utter waste of time it is. Thanks!!!
