GrumpyOldMan (my husband) had surgery on 11-14-23. He had Nissen Fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair. He's almost 69 years old. So, today is five days since the surgery. He has done fantastic. He spent the night in the hospital. For three days he was on a liquid diet which also included Jello, yogurt etc. Day 4 we went to soft foods such as soft scrambled eggs, instant grits, mashed potatoes, soft-cooked veggies, cottage cheese, etc. He is also a diabetic, which causes us to be especially careful with his diet. He had normal pain and soreness. Today (day 5) we are weaning him off of pain meds (only in the morning and before bed). We will do the same tomorrow. And then if needed only before bedtime to help him sleep. He would have been off pain meds possibly on day 4, but the medicine is also helping with the shoulder pain that he was already having due to an old injury. He hasn't had any heartburn, etc. He had a lot of ulcers in his esophagus because of the acid coming up from his stomach. Hopefully everything can heal now. So far, so good.

Hey all sorry bout long delay in update. So it has been six months and I am happy to report I am for most part back to 100%. My diet is back to more or less normal, I am active again in fact I just ran a 30KM race recently. The only lingering effect is the gas lol Having a understanding girlfriend sure helps there! Do I still get heartburn? Yes. That is not uncommon. But it it is light years away from before where I was taking to PPI pills or more a day. Now 15 pills last me 30-40 days or more. Food is back to normal although bread and some things do get caught still. Cant burp to save my life and I am super paranoid about ever having to vomit but my life is sooo much more improved! Don't regret it one bit only wonder why I waited so long!

On day 6. My surgeon dismissed the dietitians mashable diet and wants me on soups, jellies and yogurt only for 4 weeks. He is top bloke in London and he has a marvellous team. No painkillers. Mashable foods start on my 5th post op week. Can't fit anything in anyway as, in his words, 'I've stitched you up real tight' He want's the op to be successful for me so I am happy to follow his instructions. Changed my plasters yesterday after a shower. Slept last night after the morphine had worn off and given me terrible nightmares. Had full hernia repair also. Pain tolerable and I walk about when I start to feel brethless. I'm not overweight so the weight loss will hit hard I expect. I work with small children so it's a few weeks off work.

I know this is two years old but that's great news that it worked. Is it still working? I take acid reflux medicine every single day I am sick of it I could not take proton pump inhibitors because they gave me psychiatric problems not that Zantac doesn't sometimes. My surgery is scheduled for this week coming up and I'm getting hernia surgery at the same time. You seem like a really sweet guy I hope it worked out for you! I've been on these drugs for most of my life!

Thanks for putting these videos together, very helpful to confirm it’s normal to feel so terrible.
I am two days post surgery and feel like a train ran me over nice to see that it seems fairly normal.
I can absolutely relate to everything you talked about. I did the surgery to stop acid reflux but also to stop the progression of Barrett’s esophagus. Let me tell you, last couple of days made me question if my decision was the best one because this is brutal

I’ve also regretted this several times. I’m currently Day 6. Had my 2 year olds birthday party today. I over did it. 2nd worst day of recovery so far.

I am 8 days post op and like you I began questioning why I did this, but I’m glad because I can now sleep flat and haven’t had one Gas x or antacid since I came home. Just like you I have to relearn to eat and take it very slow. The mashed potatoes is one I haven’t tried but I did have a scrambled egg today with avocado but it might have been too much. I’m having to take Milk of Magnesia everyday to stay regular and I have an increase in gas. Suture areas are tender but I’m starting to feel better.

@@samss9744 it's been a learning curve. I've had to relearn how to eat but just getting to eat has been a huge step. I've had persistent diarrhea and have been told it's not related to the surgery but that's the surgeon, his partner says this is normal and so did a radiologist. I'm back to exercising, lots of walking, and I still eat soup or popsicles because food really fills me up. My meals have gotten very small and I am good with that. I am eating solids but in much smaller amounts. I'm back on Gas X to control gas and diarrhea. My weight is down 15lbs. I'll be at 6 weeks post surgery on 02/28 and I just have to be patient. Hope that helps answer questions.

@@ahmedelkmisi5814 Thank you for asking, I'm still on a learning curve but it's gotten much better for some things. I've lost 65 pounds and I can workout daily without much problem. I've had reflux at times but I just have to remember to eat slowly which can be challenging if I'm with friends eating out. I try not to"stuff" myself at meals by having small snacks throughout the day. All in all I'm glad I pursued it but I found out I had to have my gall bladder removed and I might not have needed the surgery but I can't unring the bell.

Yes I had this happen and I had to induce vomiting to get what turned out to be a very small piece of chicken. The size was smaller than a pencil eraser. Be safe and eat very slowly and chew until food is liquid in your mouth. It was a hard lesson to learn.
