    Nice video. I have found in my time in Austria (negative 10 down to negative 20 Celcius, 14F to -4F, many months of week-long trips) that a bivi can be used however you may want to consider either a raised bivi (hoop at head and foot) or a few strips of foam to use on top of your sleeping bag to keep the cold bivi off your sleeping bag - basically in very cold temperatures as described you will want to break the conductive connection between your sleeping bag and the bivi bag, especially if there is any wind - there is always wind. You will also want at minimum a (lightweight) tarp overhead to break the vertical cold wind which occurs because the air immediately around your body becomes relatively warmer and less dense than the surrounding air and therefore floats away, leaving a low pressure area around you which is constantly filled by fresh cold air. Another option for similar pack size and perhaps less weight might be a Dyneema tent like from ZPacks - more room and not cold wind but higher profile.

    A light tarp over the bivi gives better weather protection and storage space bud, nothing worse than climbing out your maggot and bivi in rain without overhead cover, my double hooped GoreTex bivi is my favourite bedroom in the outdoors but always used under a tarp.

    I have pretty similar sleeping gear and try to take the jaakari M whenever I can get away with it.
    Your setup doesn't leave a lot of space for very much of anything else though, does it? But I guess that doesn't matter if you just need your sleeping stuff and none of the rest.
    In order to have capacity for food, water, cooking utensils, extra layers and other bits, I tend to use the Defence 1 and make up for it's lack of insulation with extra layers. Why 2 mats? I tend to leave my klymits at home these days, instead taking the savotta's rollmat for the sake of simplicity. It is bulkier than what you use, but it acts as both a groundsheet and footprint for the biwi, and is surprisingly comfortable to sleep on. Of course, that being attached to the underside of the backpack rather than being carried inside it.
    If you find that biwi bit tight try the Observer Plus model, the increased headspace makes a LOT of difference when it comes to comfort.
    From size it also easily fits the larger L backpack and rest of the gear with you inside.
    Personally I prefer the M though, even overstuffed and heavily loaded. Such a great and comfortable pack!

    • @zufuss
      @zufuss  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jura
      Thank you for your comment and sharing your thoughts 👍🏻. For the video I have just stuffed the items into the pack… I love the jaakari M it’s one of my favourite backpacks. I have used it for many trips and I have additional pouches for extra items also I do take my time to pack it properly for a trip and not like on the video 😊.
      I recently bought the savotta rollmat but haven’t had the time to test it out yet.. by the way savotta is IMO one of the best manufacturers of gear 🤘🏻 I just love my savott gear along with my carinthia sleeping bags. Merry Christmas
      Lars

    • @zufuss
      @zufuss  2 года назад

      And yes I also do prefer the M pack, I also have the L version but for some reason it is for me not as comfortable as the M.. I like the less padded straps on the M better than the padded ones on the L… it doesn’t make sense but the M is just more comfortable for some reason

    • @apsynto
      @apsynto 2 года назад +1

      It really is! Even with 12kg on your back you hardly know it's there. 15 is a limit for me, but i seldom manage to squeeze that much stuff into its 20something liters. Super low profile and it feels like part of your body. Perfect for rough terrain. I have the L as well, but unless I really need the extra volume it stays at home.
      Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the Savotta mat when you put it through it's paces! It definitely isn't small or light, but it is so versatile, and as I said, surprisingly comfortable

    • @apsynto
      @apsynto 2 года назад

      @@zufuss I find the same. Even with the same weights, on the upper limit for M, I still find it more comfortable and stable. It just does not move when you adjust it properly. For rapid descents it doesn't throw you from side to side with inertia.
      My pet peeve with the L is that finding anything in the bottom of of it with its rolltop is like going on a caving adventure. Good luck without a headlamp, even during an overcast day sometimes.

    And what do you think about a bivy roll? Means le the hole set up as is (of course metal parts out) and roll it as smal as possible to a roll. And compress it with a back, to put it all outside on the backpack. Did you tried it? How big is it? Find only one video in RUclips about it. Cheers

    • @zufuss
      @zufuss  2 года назад +1

      It is possible, and if you roll it up with sleeping pad and sleeping bag inside you don’t need a bag for it.. the bivy will protect the sleeping bag from getting wet.. I will make a short video… give me some time and I will upload it in the future. By the way if you need a bit more space for gear or your dog please check out the snugpak ionosphere… best Lars

    This is the kit, I’m looking at. For fall, and winter camping.

    • @zufuss
      @zufuss  2 года назад +2

      Hi Bill
      Thank you for your question… I’m not sure a larger pack will fit in the headend of the bivy.. A medium size bag around 40 litter will b possible, but it also depends on how tall you are. I would suggest you to bring a tarp to put over the head end of the bivy if possible and to store your larger items under the tarp as well. I hope my answer makes sense. Best Lars
