      Yes it is! There is something about a "bombproof" bivy, isn't there? It's good to go anywhere. Thanks for commenting.

    Take a wax candle and rub it along the zip and you wont have any issues with any snagging or water ingress

    Use it for many years already, have my fourth one already as i did long-distance Walking projects months in a row. Condensation can not be prevented it's all about the environment you are in. It's a nice bivvy but they make it lighter and more fragile over the years...

    Brilliant review Paul . No such in-depth review on RUclips, so absolute credit to you. Like yourself being looking at this for 4/5 years 😂 I have an Elan and thus bivy camping has me hooked. How does the space equate to the Elan ? Gear junkies anonymous 😂Atb Tony

      Thanks for the comment Tony. I appreciate that. The observer is higher and wider about your head and body. Plenty of room for gear at your head, for boots beside you and rucksack at your feet. It is actually possible to get dressed in it, even for someone my age. You either keep your sleeping mat outside or if you keep it inside, then deflate it. TBH I haven’t used the Elan since I got it. Ever since the night in the snow. It was a terrible night and morning but I was snug as a bug in a rug.

    Nice review. Im considering this bivy.
    Do you reccomend to have an extra ground cover for it, or is it sufficient as is. At this kind of price i wouldn't want to puncture it. 🤑
    Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴

      @@SilenceSupreme hello. I use a plastic sheet underneath mine in case of thorns puncturing my mat.
      It doesn't need extra cover because it will handle rain or snow well, however it is nice to have a poncho or tarp for yourself to do cooking if it is raining. You can stay inside and have a stove at the top opening but you have to lie on your stomach. It's possible but not fun for an old guy like me.
      If you are looking for a bivvy take a look at the Alton walkabout swag. I haven't used one but the specs look great.

    You look really chilled! I have a British army Goretex bivvy. Very basic, but just about does the job. Toying with the idea of buying the Carinthia Observer to upgrade. Watching you enjoy the small things with great kit has got me decided! Be nice to have you comment on your other kit too and how it works for you on solo camps. Thank-you.😁

      Ho new subscriber here, thanks for the excellent video . I was gonna get this bivvy , but I cannot now go ahead with my purchase as I'm disgusted by the bug net mesh size .
      There's NO WAY any home mods should be required on a £750 bivvy ..
      I really appreciate the accurate review you're obviously very knowledgeable..
      My carinthia dutch army single hoop bivvy has super small mesh as standard ...I'm sticking with it ..Happy new year .

    For such an expensive piece of kit I always wondered why they didn't give the option of a left or right access zip? If you use a left hand zip sleeping bag it's awkward to get out!

      I am a great fan of some of the German channels. I like the way they do things. What I have to say now, a couple of months down the line from this video is that condensation is as much of a problem in this as in any other shelter I have. To give the Germans the benefit of the doubt, perhaps the climate here in Ireland is a lot more humid than in Germany. In Ireland/UK, during the winter you have to manage ventilation and it doesn't matter how expensive the kit is, you will get condensation and the Observer is no different. Is it damp? Yes sometimes is. Is it bad? No it's not. It's unreasonable to expect it to be dry when absolutely everywhere else in the forest is saturated.
      I was out one night before Christmas and it was bone dry, I was out after Christmas, it rained half the night and my sleeping bag was wet on the outside with the condensation. The bag has a pertex outer so it didn't really matter and soon dried.
      Thing is, I would rather be honest if someone comes here wanting to know how it really performs.... anyway, that was a bit of a ramble lol. Thanks for commenting,👍🏻

      @andywalker7582 7 месяцев назад

      @@paulkennedy5021 Thanks Paul. Their website makes great claims about the breath ability of the material they use, so it's interesting you say condensation is still a problem. With that in mind, I wonder if the extra expense is justified over, say, a Alpkit Elan or Snugpak Stratosphere. You seem to rate the Elan highly.

    • @paulkennedy5021
      @paulkennedy5021  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@andywalker7582 I rate the Elan from the point of view that it doesn’t pretend to be awesome. It’s watertight, it’s light, the couple of times I used it condensation was very low but I put that down to ideal weather…lastly it only cost me £60! If you suffer from claustrophobia you might have a problem. Maybe what I would say is I will overlook the shortcomings of something at £60 a lot quicker than the shortcomings of something at £600. Again, don’t get me wrong, If it’s a bad night, the Observer will definitely give you a way more comfortable night, but at that price it ought to…BUT…you cannot just zip it up tight on a cold winters night and think you will have zero condensation. There was just something about the Observer that made me love it but I still want to give an honest review.
      BTW. My next project is to put a bug net on a British Army Bivy bag with a zip to close it up. I have it made but haven’t got to try it out yet or make a video.

    • @npwn6569
      @npwn6569 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@andywalker7582 I have both the carinthia observer and the elan. The Elan definitely has a lot worse condensation.

    • @ashab1
      @ashab1 3 месяца назад

      Did you get the bivy project done? I had a similar idea of a three quart length zip and mesh at the opening. I have also heard of people using the Elan with a goretex bivy bag inside in extremely cold weather, it would double the weight but see how it might work not tried myself yet though. For me using a bivy has only been between 2 and 8 degrees C I can imagine lots of condensation any cooler and it being a literal sweat bag any warmer.
