    • @markantony3875
      @markantony3875 2 года назад

      Because the PRR was only a 50 mph top speed freight RR. In most cases, their 2-10-4s (basically a copy of the C&O T1) performed just as well at a lower build and operating cost at PRRs freight speeds, which was typically well below 50 mph. The Q2 was a cutting edge, end of steam design that the PRR didn't need. The PRR ended up just cutting them up to get some money out of them for scrap steel. Preservation was not in the though process.

    @09trainfan I've done some calculations and figured out that an Q2 wasn't even capable of producing more than 6000hp!
    Let me explain, there is 3 reasons. 1 it wasn't even moving in the test. Which would cause it to lose about 200 hp with rolling friction weight and aerodynamics.
    2. The PRR would overfire their locomotives in tests. Some say about 20%+
    3. This is @cylinder hp not DBHP so it will always be lower.
    Now we're talking about 5600hp!
    I'm not surprised the boilers were short on these locomotives. And even if they produced more than 6000hp it had only 5 axles.

    • @torquetrain8963
      @torquetrain8963 2 года назад

      This argument you make is very flawed and very weak. Are you a certified engineer? Do you have your own test equipment used to measure the horsepower of the Q2? Apparently you are much more of a skilled technician even in modern day than the experts back in the peak of the steam era? Totally unconvinced by your argument. Q2 registered more horsepower than any other steam locomotive in history. It's well documented. I suspect that perhaps this is an emotional reaction of sorts because your favorite locomotive cant match the stats of the Q2. I believe that the Q2 had a larger diameter boiler than the Big Boy. The Virginian 2-10-10-2 actually had the largest boiler ever placed on any steam locomotive in history, as well as the diameter of around 120 inches. the low pressure cylinders at 48 inches 4 ft. Also the most tractive effort of any steamer in history. The AE class 2-10-10-2 built by Alco is definitely a winner in many categories.

    • @abeda1636
      @abeda1636 2 года назад

      @@torquetrain8963 nice all this is true but the q2 was measured in @cylinder not dbhp, @cylinder is usually much less than dbhp, dbhp is how much power u got on the wheels which is more important but u overlooked it, the big boy has around 5600dbhp and 6290top, but it's @cylinder is around 7000dbhp, see the difference u bozo? Q2 is the most powerful steam locomotive ever built. Cut the cylinder static h.p./drawbar h.p. debate. I'm sure the engineers and mechanics and railroads of the past would have posted it. Q2 had 115,000 lbs of tractive effort. Allegheny had 110,000 lbs. The Q2 would have dragged the Allegheny back in its tracks. Q2 had a bigger boiler. Q2 had almost 2000 hp more than Big Boy also. Q2 is King of ALL locomotives. Period. All other engines bow down now. Q2 would pull the statue of liberty off of it's useless platform too. Q2 is King ,mofos.
