@@Jones3DModelingClub lol official top speed anyway. the J's were designed for 140mph and no engineer was brave enough to try for such a speed. There are plenty of former engineers that said they pushed them past 120 before they ran out of track. The fastest I heard was 127mph but I doubt that because that's faster than the world record and would have probably made headlines if it was. The T1 on the other hand is rumored to have actually hit 140mph. I don't know how true that is for the same reason as before. All the engineers made the same joke about J's though. Their max speed is only limited by the nerves of the engineer. Edit: Roanoke native here. Where the 611 was built and operated out of and still sits when it's not on the rails. Lot of people say a J can't even hit 100mph because the drive wheels are too small but when you study up on the way they were built you would know why n&w made that line of thinking obsolete.
@@nayrusama8378 If it was for safety reasons, I can see why the engineer didn't take the risk. The same thing also could be applied to many other express steam engines. Besides safety reasons, riding quality (especially for overnight sleeper trains), maintenance costs were also taken into consideration. We had steam engines that were capable of hitting 100mph+ but was there any manufacturer produce coaches and sleepers that could provide comfortable riding quality at such high speed? The N&W Class J was arguably one of the best, if not the best 4-8-4s ever made in the States, they were tailor-made to run on N&W's routes, thus the 70" drivers instead of 80". In 1944, the N&W Class J #610 hit 111mph with 11 cars behind (probably a mixed consist with heavyweight cars) when she was being tested by the PRR, The pros and cons of Class J operating at high speed, including the reason why the PRR picked the T1 instead of the Class J can be found in this article: csrail.squarespace.com/s/WP_SLRWD_1.pdf : )
I just noticed that the PRR T-1 has 12 coaches and the daylight has 14. I know why daylight lost. You did not realize you put 2 more coaches on daylight or you did that on purpose. Anyway, Nice video!!! :]
I think it's mainly cause of there high speeds or something that same thing with the Milwaukee road 4-4-2 that only has a air horn no whistle cause it high speeds for it can be heard more farther down the line than a whistle for people and motorists to hear

That train was the Lark, the overnight train between LA and SF. It was painted Pullman Pool two-tone gray as was the road's Cascade Streamliner. SP never painted a GS steamer in gray.

Thanks! I think the fastest steam engine was the PRR S1 or T1, though it wasn't official. The top speed of N&W Class J is around 100 -110mph. : )
