  • A test of my new Panasonic VXF1 camcorder during a short break to the Lake District in January 2019. Main finding was the auto white balance did not give true colours, selecting manual and using the cloudy or sunny white balance options were much truer to life. The camcorder is also pretty robust, I accidentally dropped it (on rock) and is still working OK, I would not advise you test this yourself. 4K is good but use slow pans or avoid panning altogether as you will get judder, setting the shutter speed to 50 helps.

    Where on Earth are 4K60 camcorders at the ~£600 mark?! I've been waiting for a 4K60 camcorder around this price range for about 8 years now. But every year all any of these companies seems to do is rebrand their 4K30 again!
    The Sony AX-53 came out very late 2015 / early 2016, which in itself was a refresh of the AX-33. Are Sony really saying they have no better sensor and processor to make a new camcorder in 2020? So what do Sony do? They remove the EVF from the the AX-53, call it the AX-43 and then charge the same price as what you can already pick up the AX-53 for anyway!
    Why is 4K60 taking so long to arrive at a non-pro price point? Phones and GoPros have been doing 4K60 for years and in many cases have even moved from this to 4K120 and 8K30. When are we going to see Panasonic or Sony bring this to ~£600 price point? HC-VX2 or AX-63? They wouldn't even need to spend that much money developing them either, they could keep the lens and OIS and body and everything else the same, just update the sensor and processors to give us 4K60 using H.265.
    There is no technical reason they can't, heat has nothing to do with it as I said phones and action cameras have done it for years and have a much tighter power/heat envelope to work within.
    What annoys me most is all these companies keep crying out that 'phones are stealing all their customers' but then they are so slow to give us new features such as 4K60. Phones come out every single year and move things on significantly every single year, so is it really a surprise customers forget amount them?
    For my use-case which is filming low league football, handheld, pitch side you do need a proper dedicated camcorder because the image stabilisation is much better on these than it is on a larger sensor mirrorless camera plus the fast electric zooming and super fast focusing is very much needed too. I just wish someone brought out 60fps version because I often need to slow down clips for goals or fouls, a 4K60 version of the AX43 or HC-VX1 would be a perfect camcorder.

      @@MrDogtown22 from a sensor readout jello effect point of view or just because the OIS judders a bit? I think we will start to see more and more global readout sensors moving forward but even just a fast stacked memory sensor would be good enough.

      @Speak_Out_and_Remove_All_Doubt I just cannot see why there is no 4k 60 option on Camcorders in this day and age. Most only offer 25p which just looks horrendous when panning is introduced. Especially when viewing on an OLED screen.

    Great video, reminds me how beautiful it is around there.
    Was the shot where the robin eat some of your biscuit on auto or had you locked it to a certain exposure as the left-hand-side was very over exposed but it was in direct sunlight with dark water and mountains in most of the shot so it might have just been the limit of the dynamic range of the sensor.

    Hi Matt, Thanks for your video - I'm researching different manufacturers / models at the moment and found it really helpful to see the results from your test.
    Not sure how long the std battery might last (different settings / usage etc...) but wonder if you have any issues with 3rd party batteries, if you have used them?
    I have several cameras and use non-genuine batteries without issue, but I believe that Panasonic have disabled their use through firmware - not that they would be the first / only manufacturer to do that....
    Thanks again, really helpful video!
    Martin

      Thanks for the comments. I've not used any 3rd party batteries. I'm still using the battery that came with the camera and get around an hour of shooting on a full charge. For me this is enough for capturing family and holiday memories. I think you may be right about 3rd party batteries being disabled, but I can't confirm for sure.

      I've no experience of the ax50 so can't compare. Previously owned Sony camcorders and been happy with them. I'm sure both would do the job. The only issue on high speed pans is frame speed. Both shoot 4k at 25 fps or 1080 at 50fps. Lowerframe rate does give some jarring. Guess it is a trade off, 4k image quality so much better than 1080 so I tend to stick to 4k but don't shoot a lot of fast moving objects. I went Panasonic because it was newer tech and a bit smaller so sat better in the hand. I'm happy with the axf50, focus is quick and picture quality is good.

    Hi guys
    I use elements 2019 too, and also frequently shoot aircraft. I’ve found shooing 4K but editing at 1080p allows me to a) zoom in 100% without degradation and b) smooth out any wobbles. It also means I don’t have to zoom as much when I shoot with the risk of the plane getting away from me. Regarding FPS, unless you tweak the settings you’ll always be shooting at base 25fps in the UK with PAL. You can shoot at 50fps with AVCHD if I recall but you won’t get native 30 or 60 with PAL. A cracking camera so far and a successor to my TM700.

      Hi, do you know if it is possible to add the external mic VW VMS10 and the external light VW LED1 to the camera at the same time. I can only find one one shoe mount. I have purchased both items as they were recommended for this camera and unfortunately I am unable to find any information regarding how they can be both fitted at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Great footage - the helicopter shots are weirdly serene with the blades aliasing. It's a shame the wind noise cancellation isn't better on camcorders, but I suppose you'd need a big wind sock to make a noticeable difference

    • @mattlee9934

      I agree the onboard mic is bad in any wind. I've since bought a Rode VideoMicro Microphone which is a lot better especially in wind.

    Beautiful shots. What a magnificent machine the VXF1 must be. Wind noise to be expected but I thought the camcorder would have suppressed this more? Have you found it necessary "to take steps" in this regard and, if so, how have you done this bearing in mind the guard over the microphone?

    • @mattlee9934
      @mattlee9934  5 лет назад

      Yes the wind noise is bad especially in open areas. I bought some wind muffs for a lapel mic from amazon - £5.99 www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BTNC4MG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and snipped the elastic so it covers the external mic and then used a rubber band to secure in place. This works most of the time. I also bought a Rode Micro external mic which has a much better wind sock which I use in really windy conditions, and where there aren't that many people about. It is not very subtle.

    Very nice video. I bought a VXF1 myself recently, mainly for capturing aircraft. I am still getting used to it. I live at the southern end of Windermere so recognised a lot of the places in your video. I thought the robin was especially good, I presume you were using a tripod. What are you using to edit your footage as the edits seem very clean. Also what FPS were you generally using.

    • @mattlee9934
      @mattlee9934  5 лет назад +1

      I used a small gorilla pod to get steady shots, which nicely fits into a ruck sack. For editing I use Adobe Premiere Elements 2019, I didn't want to pay a monthly subscription for premiere pro. Shooting 4K the FPS is limited to 25 so I manually set the shutter speed to 1/50, I found the faster the shutter speed the more jarring the video. 4K is good if you don't have a lot of movement but personally I've gone back to 1080 at 50 FPS, it took me a while to get use to the camera, I spent a lot of time trying different settings. Hope you get on with it OK.

    • @wrongway2001
      @wrongway2001 5 лет назад

      @@mattlee9934 Thank's for the reply. I wanted Premier myself but like you don't want to pay a monthly subscription. Been there done that and got stuck with their annual contract. As I am playing around with 360 and VR180 video at the moment I keep getting tempted by Premier but managing to resist.
      I am wondering if 30 and 60 fps will work even though I am also in the UK. I think flicker is only a problem with lights causing strobing and older TV sets. Most of the videos will probably end up on RUclips or similar which is American frame rates I think. I suppose 1080 at 50 FPS could be a good compromise.
