Fed up with Richard's shady way of doing business, his lies, and his putting their lives in danger, Maggie leaves Richard, and takes the boys to Falcon Crest to live temporarily until she can decide where to go.

This was the only time Maggie's mother-in-law, showed a lot of empathy to Maggie, although her mother-in-law (Angela) is worst than Richard. It's DNA.
