    I bought one of these recently to add to my small collection. While it's time deviation leaves a bit to be desired, the overall look, fit, and finish are exceptional! It's also a very comfortable watch to wear.

    I have the black/gilt dial version (SRPE57) and IMO, the Seiko bracelet is very low end, so I removed it and fitted a nice 20mm honey tone leather strap. Now it looks like a $500 watch!

      I have the same watch and also took it off the bracelet and on a leather strap. I bought this watch for my groomsmen as well and they wear theirs all the time. Definitely not the most accurate watch in my rotation, but it’s a looker!

      @R Silk just a tip: next time, consider buying your Seiko (or Orient) on a rubber strap (you'll save a couple bucks), and pick up a compatible bracelet from Long Island Watch or from Uncle Seiko

    The Seiko is really a very nice everyday watch. But a better price-performance ratio has the Citizen Tsuyosa. The watch has recently built the 8215 movement with hacking second and the watch has sapphire crystal.

    I have owned this watch for a while now. Got to say it’s my “go to” watch, just can’t help it. Out of the box mine is a mere +3 seconds!. The bracelet is actually very good and I have no intention of swapping it out for an Uncle Seiko or similar. The clasp micro adjustment could be better but hey. Uncle Seiko has a coupe of additional dial options if you want to mod it. I’m leaving mine stock as it scratches that “Explorer” itch quite well. My other Seiko’s don’t get much wrist time since buying this! Same for my Tag and Constant etc. great watch, great size, great looks, it just works!

    For those of you new to the hobby, Seiko a few years ago was like, we are offering way too much for way too little, so they started offering way less for way more. Your best affordable options are now with a Japanese company under the same group, called Orient.

    • @jannisn454
      @jannisn454 Год назад +14

      Perfectly phrased. Seikos reputation for selling watches easily worth double what they ask for it is definitely gone, you get way less for your money nowadays.

      @@jannisn454 True 100%, my SARB017 Alpinist cost $400 around 7 years ago and the SARB line was crazy in the value prop. The new Alpinist costs $725, is larger, thicker, and has a mismatched date with a cyclops that just doesnt look great. Same thing with these seiko 5s, you used to get them for under $100. Sure they didnt hack but they were 1/3rd the price.
      Sadly I wouldnt really recommend Seiko as the entryway to watches anymore. There are some really cool microbrands Id much rather go to for the sub $500 category

      I tend to agree with this comment. I've owned several Seiko's over time (still own two, one being an SKX007) and I like them, I just don't like them enough to buy them any more when other, better, options are available. And when you can buy an Orient Kamasu for sub $300, given what that watch offers, its hard to make an argument for a Seiko instead.

    I own a seiko 5. I am not a watch expert, but I would not care about the movement for a daily watch, but rather the durability : Titanium case ? Saphire glass ? Strength of the lume (weak) ? The annual review ? At this price, I think better options are available (notably other brands like Citizen BM-8560, Casio Edifice).

    The DressKX, particularly the 61, is the classiest budget watch I know and the only current Seiko 5 I can take serious. To me it looks even better than the Tudor Black Bay. So clean, so iconic, so modern, so versatile. A tad large for a minimalistic three-hander, but in the end it’s a semi diver.

      If you want accuracy get a quartz watch. Almost every mechanical watch , and certainly in this price range, will be off at least a few seconds a day, usually less than 20 seconds--but not always. Even very expensive COS certified mechanical watches may be off around 5 seconds a day. People get mechanical watches because they prefer them, (for no logical reason I can see), but we enjoy them. I think Teddy recently did a video in which he described accuracy as an overrated feature--but of course that is a matter of personal preference.

    Like some of the other commentariat, I am not sure what the point of this Seiko is, at least not for me. I bought a Seiko 5 Sport (7S36-03J0) back in 2013 for maybe $129 US and it has worked just fine ever since. I don't think I would pay around $300 for a Seiko of this type. For a nice dive watch at a budget price, I would go with a Vostok. I have 2 and they work just fine as a field watch. For a bit more you can get a Hamilton Khaki Field variant. Or as someone mentioned upthread, you can get a nice micro brand somewhere in this price range with a Sapphire Crystal. or something like a basic Laco Flieger with a Miyota movement. Or maybe a Seagull 1963 for something that is a bit dressier, less expensive and works just fine.

      re: Hamilton, I've not heard of Seiko 5s fogging in humid conditions so there's that.

      @@Horizontalvertigo where are you getting this information from? I'm no Hamilton expert but I've never heard of this are you sure it's not anecdotal from somebody's nephew's third Uncle who had fogging after they didn't replace the caseback properly?
