Those are mule deer in the background.
I was shooting 30 grains of FFFg for both because in my revolver it's an accurate charge and it's the max charge that will allow the conical bullet to fit.
Paul, long time fan here, perhaps you recognize my name. I noticed you very slowly lower the gun before each shot. Is this something you do intentionally or instinctively? Judging by your ability to shoot so well, it seems to be an effective technique and it intrigues me. It makes sense, you gently (or naturally) decrease the tension in your shoulders or arms or back, seems much more stable and reliable than say trying to slowly raise the gun as this would require activating/contracting said muscles which I would imagine would lead to much less controlled movement.
@@yugen It may be a matter of getting clothing out of the way.
I found it interesting that you didn't mention the difference in percussive force applied to the target. I know you mentioned that the foot pounds on target were significantly different, but you didn't mention it after the meat target. The conical projectiles knocked the meat target clean off of the table. Do you suppose that would make a difference, say if you were deer hunting? ..perhaps obliterating a whole lung, instead of just punching a hole through it?
@@Crogon Pushing the target off the table had more to do with the orientation of the target, and how it was sitting on the table than with the amount of force.
@@PaulHarrell Interesting.. thanks for the response! greatly appreciated. :)
You know the ammo shortage is getting bad when Paul starts doing Black Powder reviews.
.......what you don't realise is that Paul has stacks of raw material at home for making the projectiles.....from all the Terminators that have been sent back to take him out..........my money's on Harrell.
Just try to find some percussion caps.
Ive wanted 2 1858s for a while, one Army and one Navy, and that was befofe the ammo issues.
Problem is I have nowhere to shoot them. Only range close by is an indoor, and I guarentee they wont let me shoot em even with BP substitute.
Few months and we'll be down to sticks and stones.

Yes indeed. Thanks Paul and crew for another really informative and entertaining video.
Thanks for making this particular video. I was considering casting conical bullets as I have never seen them for sale & figured they would offer more accuracy. Time will better be spent loading more 44 Mag.

I assume he mined the lead as well.

He just picks up previously fired projectiles and squeezes them into shape, recycling from previous range time.

Come on, his shots aren't that impressive... I can do that with my modern pistol at 5 meters, easy! :D
I would agree with that statement." Group? What group? I'm on paper!":-)
I'd be happy if my shot group was made up of Paul's fliers
Im sure we could all get there if we could afford to shoot as often as he does
All his flyers in in the same two inch group. He really only has one flyer.
All it takes is practice and dedication.
You need more range time and maybe some class instruction, eh?
To quote the Marlboro Man, " I read the book, it came with the gun."
Paul won't admit it but on the second target he was playing tic tac toe.
@@JCE3000GT Sometimes i'm left feeling unsatisfied over things like that
He didn't hit the 'X', but that thing was _terrified..._
I almost thought he was circulating around that X on purpose....
When he has a misfire you can see no flinching whatsoever.
Sorry to hear that you're a flincher. Best get out to the range some more, eh?
IDK, but I think the misfires may actually have been empty chambers
left that way on purpose, but again, I don't know that for sure
Yeah SpecWar has a tendency to make you a cool cucumber
Shouldn't you count to ten before advancing the cylinder? This isn't a battle field.
@@norman_sage2528 It happened more than once, he only loaded 5 of the six cylinders. It's a common safety thing with black powder firearms, a lot of modern reproductions are safe to carry hammer down on a loaded chamber but Paul may prefer to always do things the same way to avoid a moment of negligence with guns that can't be carried on a loaded cylinder. Or tbh he may prefer a 5 shot group.
So basically Paul admits he did this presentation because no one else wanted to because it's a royal pain in the ass. Beautiful job and never disappointed with your presentations. No task too hard for Paul Harrell.
Even worse than the .22LR reliability video, which had to be a royal pain in the ass in it's own right lol.
Well he spent decades in the military which is fucking full of that kind of work

Yup if you really want to draw them run a chainsaw too.
My deer hunting property borders a range, its amazing how used to gunfire they get
I keep looking for bigfoot sneaking around in the background .
I built a berm behind my house, and they started feeding in between it and my shooting line. I had to shoe a buck away. Of course this was not during hunting season. They never showed during that time. That leads to the theory that they put on disguises, hotwire some dude's old beater truck, and drive to a local convenience store and pick up a copy of the DNR books with the schedules in them.
Some friends and I were in the woods in Idaho target practicing, and sighting in a 30-96 rifle, when a black bear walked between us and the target. The bear just looked at us and kept walking parallel to our shooting table...LOL
Whenever Paul points at himself and references "the average shooter", I understand the point he's making but I still think to myself well if he's average then I must be the equivalent of a corpse
ummm that's makes the two of us. I am amazed at what this man can do with a firearm.

You familiar with the "bag of holding" from D&D?
Thank you for the presentation Paul. As I was under 21, I've kept a steel frame 5.5 inch barrel .44 1851, loaded with 6 shots of .454 round balls on 32 gr of Pyrodex, under my pillow for years now. Now that I'm 21, I am finally going to be getting an auto loader.
This is very helpful for those of us who couldn't get normal cartridge guns, whether it be age restrictions or just strict laws.
Its a good day when "gun dad" gives us a life lesson. I was always curious if switching to conical would be worth it.
If you are asking about the price, a pound of lead cost around $3.25 a pound. 100 Hornady round balls are about a pound. A lot to invest into the mold, lead, and melter. But the cost goes down a lot.
I only shoot conicals out of my Dragoon, but round balls out of my Remington New Model Army.
Cant think of anything fun or engaging. Just leaving a comment for the algorithm. Another great video.
If only other people were as honest as you
I would be interested in a presentation on the effectiveness of flat nose projectiles in common defensive calibers like 45 acp 40 sw 9mm 380 acp and 357 magnum
From experience;Hardly any difference to round nose.Even the famous Elmar Keith Semi-Wadcutters do not have any additional benefit!--Why? bullets for muzzleoaders are from soft pure lead, that will flatten;bullets for modern calibers are either jacketed or hard-cast lead;which, both, nearly do not expand at all!
@Name BS! In 9mm the Hornady Flat Nose was/is decidedly more accurate than the usual ogive bullets;but they did not have any more stopping power!
Like wad cutters?
I shoot 200gr LSWCs in my 1911....for target work..... being almost pure lead, they would be really nasty on a "meat target"..... Those 200 grainers do similar velocities to my 200gr Conicals in my Remington percussion revolvers (around 1000fps) and I see no reason for he terminal effect to be significantly different between the two.
I'd certainly not feel undergunned with my BP revolvers compared to my 1911, although the Remington only holds six rounds (one or two less than the 1911), but if I have a loaded and capped spare cylinder handy, I can change the cylinders in about 6 or 7 seconds and be ready to go again... slower than a mag change, but in the real world, not that much difference.
@@KathrynLiz1 I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either one. 😕

Wow, I wasn't expecting results like that👍. Oh and Paul..."PLEASE" never again refer to yourself as a "average-shooter"🙏
I love that this presentation was finally done. I bought two 1851 navy's one with a five inch barrel and one with a eight inch barrel and I've come to find the balls are still available unlike 9mm 380 22lr and 45acp. And still a box of one hundred balls at fifteen dollars at most. I'm still exploring the legal side of it all but it did solve the scared feeling of being defenseless because I only have enough ammo for a few mags for all my other guns because I've never been a hoarder.
When I used to hunt/shoot with black powder, I learned a lot about bullet style, velocity, and rate of spin that also translates to modern guns and ammo. Round ball needs a longer twist but I won't bore (pun?) you with details since you probably already know it. I really enjoy smoke poles and miss them at times.
Old Italian repros have a slower twist 'cuz they figured customers were just going to use round ball (if they use a projectile at all-- remember these companies started up to supply reenactors). Then folks graduated to casting conical bullets (modern or historical) and those 1 in 30" twists weren't working. Nowawdays they're 1 in 16 to give conicals better accuracy.
Those Ruger Old Army's are the finest BP revolver ever made. I love mine, even with a slightly pitted barrel (i bought it used), it is still as accurate as ever. best part is when you cock the hammer is goes Click,,,,,Click,,Click.
Well, I hope they're the best
They were made over a century after most traditional designs
Lol
I wanted one back in 83 they were about $275, now i payed $700 for a used on and i was very happy to get that one, it was just dumb luck!
Really wish Ruger would make them again along with factory conversion cylinders. That'd be some awesome versatility.
I agree, very solid and well built black powder revolvers. Some say they are the best design of a black powder revolver ever made. I bought mine new in 1986 because I was under 21 and could not buy ammo and this allowed me to shoot regularly while in the military at a private range. I packed it up in storage in 1994 and just got it back from my parents house and cleaned it up in Dec. 2020. Just in time for the ammo shortage! By the way, I used Rig on the gun to preserve it and it looked like new once I cleaned the grease off. I will swear by Rig from now on!
Even with all the headaches, I would still take a Walker over the Ruger. It was the most powerful hand gun for almost 100 years and is still more powerful than anything that isn’t a Magnum.
I could honestly watch an hour or two of Paul talking on pretty much any subject, but what I really want is a couple of hours on the development of firearms in the black powder era, with or without demonstrations 'coz I find the subject fascinating and I'm sure Paul would be very informative on that.
Andy, I second your suggestion.

Paul, pretty please do the talk on YOUR experiences with black powder weapons.
As usual Mr. Harrell's videos are exceptional. You sir are a true professional and one of the best on Utube.
If I spoke half as well as Paul does in front of a camera, I'd be making a living at it! He breaks down information so simply, analytically, and consistently. I love the material and the delivery of the commentary! Keep it up, Paul!
I've been hoping you'd do an episode putting round ball through the meat target. It's interesting that the damage wasn't far off what I've seen with some modern cartridges. While a black powder pistol would not be my first choice for a defensive arm it wouldn't be because they're ineffective.
In Canada that might be the only firearm we are allowed to buy after bill c21.

Infrequently I carry a BP revolver for defensive purposes. I use a hard cast 180 he SWC. In my testing it’s given good results-averaging 850 FPS over 30gr of 777 out of a 5” barrel. Same load sucks out of my 3” Avenging Angel..so that one gets round ball
that's weird. You should be getting 1000ish fps with that charge and projectile weight.
It’s the short barrel. Kills the velocity. But don’t get the wrong idea-I would not want to get perforated with it.
One of my customers loaded my 240 grain Universal Bullets in his Pietta 3 inch 1851 Avenging Angel
Which had a 30 grain charge of Pyrodex P.
The 240 grain RFN Universal Bullets were cast of hard Clip On Wheel Weights. Loaded with a Tower of Power.
Within 20 yards he shot into an Oak tree. Later he cut open the area of tree and retreived the bullet which penetrated 5 inches into the Oak tree.
@@MrKaido93 mine are lighter and a swc profile. They get good penetration but more importantly, they make a cookie cutter hole going in. That makes for rapid fluid (blood) loss. While I d love a good JHP-in a Bp revolver your not gonna get enough velocity to ensure expansion. So the swc is next best thing. Which gets me to thinking-how about a .44 cal 160-170gr full wadcutter or hollow base wadcutter. Should still get good velocity, reasonable penetration and a nice clean cut at point of entry. 🤠

I also have done very similar testing in my history with this awesome pistol, and I have found that my pistol seems to favor round balls over the cast conical bullets for paper targets, but when hunting with this pistol, yes I have hunted successfully with it a few times, I do prefer that harder punch that the conical projectiles provide.
Thank You Paul for taking the time to do this testing, I am all too familiar with the time consuming task of reloading as well as the mechanical frustrations (darned #10 caps) that come with the territory when you use one of these awesome pistols!

When conical bullets were introduced and used in muzzle-loading RIFLES users noticed significant if not dramatic improvements in accuracy at long range. The fact that such differences are not apparent here is a testament to the inherent differences between pistols and rifles and how they are used.
I think there might be some help to conical vs round balls, but a well fitting patched round ball is plenty accurate. The big change came from a smooth bore compared to a rifle that using mini balls could be loaded as fast as a smooth bore
Would love a handloading tips and tricks presentation with maybe a "hot or not" aspect to handloading. As always my day has been improved by the lack of nonsense. Thank you

As usual , very well done. The heavier bullet printed higher because it spent longer (time wise) in the barrel. The forces of recoil (newton law of motion) being equal.

Paul: let me do a presentation of ball vs bullet.
Paul is truly the man.
Two years later just watched the video a lot to take away from your comparison thankyou something I've been noticing in alot of comparison videos the heavier loads tend to make the difference in the higher grouping I see the barrel raise considerable to the lighter load, again thank you and God bless.😊

Great presentation! You got similar results to my cap and ball shooting experiences with round ball and Lee conical castings with actual black powder loads. I've gone to using 777 for greater higher energy output. I was able to get an average of about 1150 fps with a round ball with 30 grains 777 out of my Remington NMA (8" barrel), although it is possible to get 40 grains behind a round ball for even more power. But the most powerful load I've come up with is 30 grains 777 behind a Kaido conical bullet giving me an average of 958 fps for just over 500 ftlbs of energy! The extra mass of the Kaido slug gives plenty of recoil, shifting the point of impact up and to the left. They're also much more finicky to get into the loading port without slight modifications to the revolver frame. But this is the load I practice with and prefer.
Yep, Kaido bullets are a go to for power. I got a high of 480 ft/lbs with 3F swiss powder.
I am able to have my Backbored Ruger Old Army cylinder fit 40 grains of Triple Seven 3F powder and my 255 grain Big Daddy RFN Bullets.
This makes for an extreamly stout load that should be used in ROA's with Pachmeyer rubber grips.
I finally bought some Swiss powder and holy shit...The report is significantly louder as well as a sharper recoil. I haven't chronographed the difference but I'm sure it's more powerful than Goex. Jake at Everything Black Powder has probably done a chrono test.
Thanks for all the diligence Paul and crew!
Pretty good printing with that piece! I read an excerpt from a union civil war cavalry officer who stated that though conical were heavier, that a “round ball would take the fight out of a man faster”.
Wild Bill died with a brace of 1851 Navy pistols on his belt. He thought the round ball .36 was the best tool for the job, even after the .45 and 44-40 were common.

They have been used to cleanly take wild boar, deer and even a 2000lb bull that went crazy and dropped each animal cleanly with a single shot out of percussion revolvers.. the Kaido bullets are the pinnacle of conical bullets for percussion guns made today.
Thank you for going through all the difficulties you did to make this terrific video, Paul!
Thank you for your diligence on getting this video out, we all appreciate it.
Traditional conicals often don’t do as much soft tissue damage because their long noses don’t cut through like a RB; Kaido Ojamaa has designed RFN conicals for C&B revolvers, however, that address this issue. I’d love to see a video comparing the traditional conical to Kaido’s. His bullets have found much favor among BP hunters
I use a 200gn hp made for a 45 acp
I would've thought for conical to have greater accuracy but I was wrong it seems
It is known, that the conical have a tendency to be seated "off"-bore,when rammed in;additionally Paul does not seem to be a good bullet-caster;I was shocked, when he called the various weights of the bullets.
Not with a revolver at short distances. At longer ranges, with a rifled barrel, the difference is huge.
Most likely, the rifling twist was optimized for round balls. There is a big difference in rate of twist for a round ball and an elongated bullet. Like 1 turn in 60 inches vs 1 turn in 24, for instance. The patched round ball needs a really slow rate of twist, or accuracy just disappears. More people shoot round balls, so the gun makers compensate. A 1 in 48 twist or thereabouts is a good compromise for both, but not optimized for either. Hope this helps
@@tommylitchfield3450 I never heard of anyone using patched balls in a BP revolver. Also, civil war era revolvers were nearly always used with conical bullets in paper cartridges.
1. It varies from individual gun to individual gun , and how much effort you put into respective load development .
2. Original Guns used Gain Twist Rifling , replicas use conventional twist .

Which of course would be +P compared to 30g , that's assuming the pistol can handle it , but it is a modern Ruger so it could probably handle a good bit more due to modern metals and the product liability factor that is built in these days by manufacturers to avoid being sued .

Aka the Colt Old Model Army revolvers: the Walker and Dragoons charged to 50 grains of powder.
I have a great time watching your videos, thanks for all you do!
Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation on this topic. Thanks.
Now that metallic cartridges are a thing of the past I guess we're all going back to cap and ball now?
Probably flintlock, no percussion cap/primer needed.
No more spare 15 round magazines, we'll bring back wearing dusters as a trend and carry 4 revolvers a la Josie Wales. Soon Paul will demonstrate the differences between shooting the cap and ball revolver while holding it vertically vs while holding it canted at 90°, 'gangsta' style.
lol! try to find blackpowder now!
@@michaelharris1455 easier to make it than find it right now
I bet that part of the woods smelled soooooo good that day.
Edit:
I miss the smell of gunpowder 😢
We do give our thanks for you doing these for us. We appreciate all you do for us. Unfortunate that those things happened. But super thanks for trucking through to bring us the education!
I have the same mold in 229gr. For my .44. They shoot just fine out of my pistol. I also used them in my Air Force Texan 457 air rifle. I took a nice sized hog a few years ago with the air rifle with Kaido here in Florida. Love them in both weapons.
