Always got that bivy sack, tarp, and jacket buried in the bottom of the backpack, plus that garmin is a godsend to drop a message to the wife. Walked back in the dark too many times to count, but as I got older I started taking just enough to get me through a night if I need to on those longer day fishing trips, especially the solos. That lust for fish is real, especially when the afternoon bite turns on!
I am glad I am not the only one! The siren song of more fish about crashed this ship into the rocks!
A good friend owns a bunch of that private ground. Been in there many times over the last 20 years, and am always awarded with something exciting!
I swear you just explained what each and every one of my fishing trips ever turns into😂 a rock climb and hike in and out. Worth it every time but none the less worked for!

Back in college (FSU), and my bass fishing days, I did some things in the quest for fish that were arguably dumber than your canyon escapade. Not satisfied with fishing relatively open lakes like Lake Jackson (just north of Tallahassee), I did some hiking and exploring, and found some dandy places that no one else fished; unfortunately, it meant getting in the water with the snakes, gators, and snapping turtles, but somehow I made it out unscathed, and I caught some really nice fish. I still get too obsessed with catching fish, and I lose track of time, but now that I'm 55, I pick my spots a little better. BTW - I've looked on Google Earth, and a lot of those "remote" places I found back in the 80s have houses on them now.
Maybe it is the restless nature of younger men to push towards the unknown! You wouldn't catch me dead in gator water that is for dang sure!
@@FLYALLSZN They normally aren't that aggressive, unless you tease one for an entire summer like I did. I used to fish this one pond, wading it. I had this huge 3/4 oz Johnson Silver Minnow that I used to throw for a home run bass; when I got bored, I used to tease this little 5ft gator that lived there...I'd cast in front of him, he would go chase the splash, I'd real up quickly and cast in the other direction, having that gator going back and forth. Well, he got his revenge one day. I hung a nice fish in the pads, and it quickly wrapped me up in the pads. I pulled up so hard, I broke my rod at the handle, but I could still feel the bass on it. So, I went after it, and wouldn't you know it was the one spot on that pond that I hadn't waded yet, and it was over my head. So, I'm out there, treading water in old jeans and combat boots (couldn't wear shorts because of leeches), and I could feel the fish - about a 5lb bass, nice, but not a trophy. Well, here comes Mr Gator, slowly swimming straight at me, then submerging like a U-boat. I figured it was the moment of truth; either I was getting the fish or he was. I wrapped the line around my wrists and jerked as hard as I could - the line popped, and I figure he got a free fish dinner out of me.

Been in that situation i too almost died climbing out climbing over a ledge realized from bottom looked diffrent now im standing on a two foot area with 5 ft tall rock cliff to pull up n over and a 80 drop straight down with tight wet waders ,hard to manuver, pull hsd to tie myself to a bush to rest literally was balanceing there,pulled myself over and its straight up tiny gravel slideing back as im going up with every fiber in my soul made it up lost 7;finger nails,climbing,and my rod, hard up to catch some fish,,,
Glad you made it out. Don’t fall victim to “ get back to the truckitis”. Pack a down sleeping bag and a space blanket and some matches. Also, don’t be afraid to backtrack. You’re very athletic and strong but even the best can fall !
I am always packed for an overnight just in case. But a down sleeping bag might be a bit too much! I already carry heavy as a rule. Again looking back, backtracking was the right call. But in the moment I was trying to avoid doubling back through rattle snake country

@@FLYALLSZN Yeah, I don't normally carry a sleeping bag on a day trip, but I always have a poncho and a jacket or two, and always lighters and a candle. I've spent a few nights trying to catch catnaps until the fire dies down and I need to feed it. Sometimes a night of little sleep is better than trying to hike out in the dark.
Love the “Free Solo comment, though Alex Hunnold has some serious rock climbing talent advantage. And Alex doesn’t climb with wading boots!! Stay alive so we can continue to enjoy your diatribe!!!
The wading boots felt like clown shoes half the time! I am doing my best Chapel!
I went down a steep face once thinking I could get back up. I was dead wrong. I had to take my waders off and swim the river and walk 5 miles up to the next bridge, then 4 miles back up. To this day I don’t chance the steep stuff, no matter how good it looks down below. I did catch some big Colorado browns though lol
It can be really tough to gauge in the moment! I bet that was one cold swim..
I can totally see myself in your great videos, the same enthusiasm and love of adventure. Here you put yourself in exactly the same position I once put myself in in Australia in 1997, a very dangerous climb out of a canyon after a day of fishing by myself. The water looked good and I just couldn’t get enough. But coming out I had to hold my rod between my teeth so I could use both of my arms to climb up a near vertical rock face and out of there. I learned my lesson that day. Fly fishing is a great life passion, but I will never put my life at risk again just to get a chance to cast at the next rising fish. There will always be another great fish tomorrow. I hope for your family’s sake that you reach the same conclusion. Keep on posting great stuff!

I'm past the half-century mark now and have a hard time remembering that when it comes to scouting new territory. I NEVER remember to pack enough water, and ALWAYS stay longer than intended. Great channel! Tight lines!

Always prepare to the stay the night out when your by yourself and fishing a new place!

I've had some sketchy climbs out of river valleys....nothing quite as sketchy as that. I've put my hands and feet into cracks and crevices that could have easily held a rattler or copperhead . Not getting skunked helps my attitude in those situations!
Oh man.. If I would have been skunked on top of that nasty climb.. I would have been so upset haha
Good video! I have had more than a few experiences where I'm doing something while going after fish and I think to myself, "WTF am I doing?! This is STUPID dangerous!"
It just happens sometimes.. I always want to kick myself when I get in those tough spots
glad you made it out ok... also i learned that fishing the rio grande is really tough... i walked in through pilar and walked up stream about a mile or so.... by the time i got out i had two busted rods from slipping so much...theres no trail and just boulder hopping..real easy place to twist an ankle and be really screwed..who ever plans on fishing that place please bring a flash light....good fishing though!..nice video dude
The parallels between the Rio & this Canyon are real! Those tough spots can be worth it but my god they will test your metal.

Great video! you have no Idea how much fun it was watching you hike in and out of that canyon, I grew up on the farm on the other rim, the area you were at we called 57 as that was how many acres was on that lot. I've taken my kids down and they also love that area but it is a beast! we called part of the trail rattlesnake ridge for obvious reasons. still my favorite part of the world to fish, I just hope I have 10 more healthy years that I can still get in and out. well done!

I was bit by a very large rattlesnake just a little over a year ago here in Utah while fishing stepping off of a bridge abutment. Fortunately for me it only penetrated my pants and did not get into the flesh of my leg. We were probably an hour and a half from the hospital. It could’ve been fatal.

110% Would have just doubled back to my known route and rolled the dice on walking through snake country. Because that night the snake ended up being the least of my worries.
Been there done that and we're not going back. It was a great adventure and I think we were Upstream further from where you were but not much better.

I've fished that area a few times. Never been there without hearing a rattler buzz at me from the brush. Sometimes it's a fine line between a new adventure and a disaster. Keep exploring!

Nice trip, good filming too…experience is what you get from dumbassery ( I don’t mean disrespect in that, but we all go from young bucks to graybeard the wise) and the secret ingredients are obsession, planning and willingness to take risks to explore (aka dumbassery). My only 2 cents, wading stick is invaluable and actually speeds up hiking and wading (maybe you can figure out how to attach the GoPro to it and get rid of tripod?) also maybe a pair of quarter top light hikers with a carabiner and webbing strap to hold whichever shoes you aren’t wearing. Lots of trade offs to consider, lifestraw, headlamp (rechargeable and key), maybe a flint just in case? Keep up the good work! I wish I was still in my 20s, I still take risks but I move more slowly :)
No disrespect! I know what you mean Evan! All the suggestions are much easier said than done unfortunately! For what I do and how I do it would push me over on weight or put my at a disadvantage as far as gear goes!

I saw some MASSIVE fish down there so I don't doubt it at all!
Tensleep canyon here is VERY steep and difficult to access. I was at Fremont Canyon last summer on the rim looking down wondering how I could get down. Admiring all the fish I could see from way up here when all of a sudden a BIG rattler swam right across the river below me!! it had to be 6 ft, it was huge from way up there... and it was quick! after that I fished somewhere else lol...
It’s tough to weigh out the risk with a measured head when big fish are nearby

I’ve been into that canyon multiple times and I’m pretty sure I know right where you parked. It’s a nasty climb, but there’s nice trout in there because only idiots go in there that aren’t floating through in a raft 😂 so you’re in good company! Tight lines ✌🏼
I almost died in same situation as you..in chama below El Vado. I lost my rod and 7 fingernails.i still get whimmys thinking bout it..ther still lays a sage and ross.if you can get down to a insane cliff. All for being hard up as we fly fisherman are.
Recently discovered your channel and really enjoying you vids. Must say I have put myself into some situations due to fish lust as well. Little bit more careful now as I get older but easy to make a bad judgment call now. I always carry a personsal locator beacon and an emergency kit with me pretty much anywhere. Hopefully I'll never need to use it. Tigh lines look forward to you next vids while I enjoy you old ones.

Looks like Bitch Creek to me but the opposite side. :) There is an easier way in and with hiking poles safer up and down. Just spent 2 days in there. 20 min down and 20 min up. Learned from last year. Rule of thumb down there is you set an alarm and leave by 8pm regardless. You had bear spray and the Garmin. Tell ppl where you are in case you don't come out. One fall on those ledges and you could be bear food! There are SICK honey holes down there! :)
Bitch Creek is a lot of fun! But this is the main section of the Teton. I think I had started to make the right moves around 8 but the vertical climb slowed me down big time. I send out a few pins before I drop in usually!

I've been there..hiking in the middle of nowhere with that dumb gotta catch that trout passion.
I'm in my late fifties with severe Dad bod. I still never will quit the strive for the perfect fly catch experience. Cliffs, snakes, cranky farmers, possessive bear, bobcats and moose be damned. That one perfect catch is always worth it!
Stay safe and think before you step man. Carry bear spray!

On the vertical? I may have to push back.. As hard as I had to work to get up and around, I can't imagine a snake would be willing to exert the same level of output. Plus there was hardly anywhere for prey items to hide or eat with the harsh angles. Once I crested though.. Prime prime snake country.
Do it while you are young. I try to get off beaten paths too but at 70 it’s getting harder. I’d be creeping out if I knew a rattlesnake could be by any sagebrush or any rock ledge your hand was grabbing onto hiking out that canyon. When climbing out did you pack away your camera/tripod combo and your rods?
Young legs might be the only thing that got me out! I packed them both up! I needed both hands for the entire climb

Crazy man, I'm needing some good gear, I fish in some creeks in South west louisiana and we have some nasty Cottonmouth, ground rattlers and diamonds backs. I'm always holding my breath until I get into the water. I need some proper protection I can hook to my legs and my wade boots

In the summer time I leave the waders at home! I am mainly using boots and wading socks right now.
You know we all do it , it must be some defective gene that drives us to sometimes make decisions that aren’t in our best interests. But that being said I have been doing it for 72 years and have had more fun then a person should be allowed. The saying do something that scares you every day will help keep you alive may not be exactly true I have many friends who are dead but at least they had fun living. Thanks for the video

Head lamps don't take up much room!
Head lamps cant save you from stupidity. It is usually in my EDC for day trips.. but my head lamp was at the bottom of my backpacking kit in prep for a big trip that weekend.
I hope you were scoping out new water while scoping out that new DGD album!

Perhaps invest in a small drone with a camera. You might have been able to scope the landscape and your path and could have seen a bit more detail (10 minutes flying time) before making the descent. Google maps, even in the 3D view, does not give you the clearest picture of what you're getting yourself into. Just my thoughts. Great video and thank you for sharing.
Easier said than done! Especially with tricky airspace laws all over the country! A drone would be a great tool though!!

I think you are beating yourself up a bit. This is just some good ol enjoying the outdoors!
This is a physically demanding one. A young man's thing. The only way I could physically fish that one is either float it in a boat or my preference is to fly a helicopter in since I fly helicopters. So yeah maybe and it's a big maybe a 500 C or D would be the machine of choice. If you don't you should carry a couple of ace bandages in your pack, should you get tagged. I don't know what your finances are, but I think if you continue to go way off the beaten path, I do myself, I have a sat phone alone with the personal locater. The snake bite is no joke. And on top of all of it all the stuff you carry to boot. On the other hand, we are lucky here in the States- all we have to deal with is rattlers, water moccasins, copper heads, and the odd coral snake. It's way different if you chase trout in Australia, Tasmania or the warm water stuff in South America.
This was a mega grind George.. I think the next time I go back I will have to find a helicopter myself! I have a full first aid kit with enough to mark and bandage potential snake bites... but as far as perspective goes you are 100% correct. We are extremely lucky there are only a handful of critters and crawlers that can kill us in the states.
Why don’t you bring camping gear when you make these insane canyon drop ins?
