- Food52 Resident Drinks Expert John deBary shares a beverage we all need this winter, a hot buttered rum. The main idea behind this cocktail is the harmony of butter and rum, cushioned by brown sugar with hot water providing the space to expand. In addition to tossing in some warming spices, butter is infused into the rum itself to give a richer dimension of buttery goodness. GET THE RECIPE ►► f52.co/3rGtKGl

His make up is so elegant. Almost didn't notice, but that lipstick just pops
Their makeup is always incredible - especially the statement lipsticks! I like how this color pulls together the lilac hair and the blue on their sweater 😊
Thank you! The lipstick is from my friend Junior Mintt and the lip kit is from her line, Mintty Makeup (I can't put links in youtube comments)
I need that sweater
Me too, but what if the sweater-maker anticipated this and wrote “PAWS OFF!” on the back
Me too. Garfield fueled my lasagna/cheese addiction as a child 😂
@@yessarah He is less of a role model and more of a rolls model.
Heck yes
@Food52 The people have spoken, John, and I do indeed need that sweater
If I make it up tonight, it will be ready for breakfast. I can pour myself a cup and start that new book I've been lusting after. I'll start up the fireplace, throw my red plaid blanket across my lap, and cuddle up with my dog.
Don't judge me...I'll need sustenance...early in the day. An ice, then sleet, then snow storm is predicted, so hot buttered rum sounds perfect. I'll want something to warm me up when I come in after moving the snow...I'll probably have to go out there twice...better make a double batch.
Thanks for the recipe. 😊👍
That sounds wonderful! Stay warm and stay safe over there 😊❤️
Sounds llike a perfect day
I'd like a coffeed version. Sounds amazing. I just need to be able to drive at any moment.
Tbh butter in coffee is delicious! And I don’t see why you couldn’t take that first step of infusing the drink with butter in the fridge, and just replace the rum with good strong black coffee 😋
@@SwitchelSweets I actually thought about testing out a non-alc version with coffee instead of rum, but ran out of time!
@@jnd3001 I have an idea that the butter would also catch the little stray grounds that my French press lets through sometimes lol. Not sure on that but I’ll be trying it to see how it goes! 😊
@@SwitchelSweets keep me posted!
@@jnd3001 oh you need to do this with coffee!! It has left all the pleasant acidity and flavors while taking out that bitterness at the end of the sip. And the final rest in the freezer helps filter out ALL the extra bits, even that weird sediment that happens when you put fine grounds in a French press lol. Now I thought my fine mesh sieve for stock was going to be fine enough for the strain, but I did end up with a little extra butter in my cup so you definitely need the coffee filter! But this is delicious. I can drink this black. I think I might add a spice sachet for the fridge rest in the future to make it more of a treat - a lil vanilla bean, a bit of cinnamon, maybe an allspice berry. Long story short: You gotta try this 🥰
I’ve never heard of or seen this person before. But my gawd they’re BEAUTIFUL
crying thank you
Brilliant! Even though I subscribe to Food 52 (vía email), I don't recall ever seeing a video featuring John DeBary concocting a drink. I found this video to be both educational (loved the descriptions of the complexity of the flavors involved), and also quite light-hearted. Love the hair & the sweater!
I know you casually mentioned it in the video, but would you ever brown the butter for this cocktail? Great episode as always, John.
Thanks! I haven't tried it, but I imagine it would be great. I just lack the discipline to brown butter without burning it lol
Loved everything about this. The coffee filter is such a good tip. I cant wait to try making this
My husband is the Art Director for Garfield/Paws Muncie,Indiana Interesting Sweater! Looks Great on you !
I see him, I click. I don't drink alcohol but I love watching him present his drinks. Could you do some (more) virgin drinks as well, John?
Absolutely. I'm hoping to have around 1/3 of my drinks here be non-alc....
@@jnd3001 I'm looking forward to that ☺️
Mouth. Is. Watering. Thank you, John! Love the idea of the make ahead batches of ‘batter’ to go with the prepared rum. 👏
Was so excited to see you had a new video! I can't wait to try this! I like that these challenge me and I've learned a lot more about cocktails along the way. Also your fashion is everything :D
I love hearing this! Thanks so much for watching.
I love a good buttered rum!
I always feel like a more wholesome and wise person after watching your videos. It’s like learning white-magic healing potions from rpgs
It's funny I always played a black/red deck back in my Magic the Gathering days...
5:43 Huh! It’s so interesting how the rum extracts everything good from the butter while the butter simultaneously absorbs all the worst qualities of the rum. You know, like a terrible relationship.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody!! 🥰
Thanks. I needed a good laugh today.
Oh my goodness. This comment! Lol . I love it
lmao exactly
I’ve always wondered how to make buttered rum, and now that I know, I will try and do it.
“If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing” I guess that explains that WILD sweater 😜💕 but legit, this looks incredible! The step with infusing the butter into the run reminds me a lot of a clarified milk punch. Is that a technique you’ve ever played around with? I’ve seen RUclips mixologists get some beautiful results with it, and in fact they’d probably be thrilled with that liquid gold you filtered out 😍
Yep, very familiar with milk punches. It's another drink technique that sounds a lot more complicated and intimidating than it really is.
Just had to say how much I love your sweater.
I love your videos! This one literally made my mouth water! I'm so glad you stalk the comments! LOL
hiiiii
I really can't wait to try this - I'll experiment with using apple cider instead of water (a tradition in my world) but I bet it's great as-is and doesn't need that extra flavor boost.
That sweater is AMAZING!
Great drink. AWESOME Jumper!!! 🤩🤩🤩
I have never tried this. I will now.
Like Hi friend that looks Delicious absolutely delicious absolutely amazing thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👈👈👈
On point as always
Such a delightful video!
Loved you on Feeling Asian!!
Thank you!
Sweater games always on point.
LOL its 82f here in AZ, I think winter is already over
Have you considered blooming the dry spices in the melting butter before combining it with the rum? I will probably give this a try. Thanks John!
Sounds like a great idea!
JDB❤THE SWEATER❤BUTTERED RUM
Great video 😊
Yum buttered rum😊👍
YUMMMMMMM!!!!
I have been doing buttered rum drinks for a long while...southern boy from Texas loves his buttered rum🤣 but I must admit as good as mine is, I tried yours and you have a few steps that makes yours much better..... mine is faster....but like you said, with a little organization it's not difficult.
Would love to know what warm cocktail you would recommend during the summer....I love warm drinks but I don't want Xmas in a cup while enjoying the evening summer breeze at the beach....so no cinnamon, nutmeg, etc....(it almost pains me to say no to these spices....luv em!) Thanx for all your efforts......
Ps....do you sell your books direct (would love an autographed copy)?❤😀
Hello! I know that Kitchen Arts and Letters in NYC has signed copies right now (I can't put the link in a youtube comment). And I will have to think on the idea of a warm summer cocktail, perhaps something with berries and black tea....
@@jnd3001 thank you for your time😀.... I will check into the location you mentioned and thanx for the summer drink idea....😉👍
never heard of this, interesting!
O-O-O-H! Can't wait to try this!
I’d like to try with either a golden or dark rum. I think they’d play nicely with the brown sugar. Also- are you familiar with the batch drink Tom and Jerry? Another winter warmer made from a batter. Any tips to make it more interesting?
Yes! This is pretty similar to a tom and jerry. And to mix things up a bit I would play around with different spirits like Cognac or Scotch ;-)
I know nothing about rum, like what's good and what's not going to work well with this recipe. I rarely drink, but this concoction really appeals to me, especiall in February here in Connecticut -- and being stuck in my apartment during a pandemic. Suggestions?
I'd say any dark rum of reasonable quality will work well. Especially considering the butter and sugar--they smooth everything out.
Today we answer the question: would Garfield drink hot buttered rum?
Happy V day ❤️❤️❤️, thank you!
does the buttered rum work at a smaller ratio if I want to make less drinks with it/try this drink for the first time?
yes, this scales!
Oooo yes please! 🤤
i clicked on this for the knitted garfield sweater.
I love your lip color! What is it?
It's from Mintty Makeup!
I watched this twice and never saw how much butter is added to the brown sugar mixture
One time for Ten to One rum.
good catch 😉
Any thoughts about a non- dairy version? EVOO or coconut oil sub for butter plausible?
I've done both but not for this drink specifically, should be fabulous
oh you are precious.
and second of all, i think adding the butter to the rum, is similar to a milk washed punch, right? where the whey from the milk solids is able to remove some of the tannins from the rum, right?
It's similar, yeah, but I know that milk punch more works on protein coagulation acting as a "filter" for the sprit and in this case it's more transferring flavor TO the spirit.
@@jnd3001 y hello john. well yes, i understand that is the majority of the good reason to let the butter steep in the rum is to transfer the alcohol soluble flavors in there. the milk solids "clarifying" the rum was a distant afterthought of what's also happening. and one of the reasons i thought the butter tasted so bad after you filtered it out.
@@igiveupfine I think that's definitely what's happening to some extent!
💐💐
If you don’t mind my asking John, what are your preferred pronouns? When I point people to your videos I want to be sure I introduce you properly 😄💕
I don't mind at all! I go by "he", etc.
You mentioned other spirits, but didn't elaborate. Are there other spirits that work with this process?
Cognac, apple brandy, anejo tequila, maybe even a nigori sake....
