  • David Cairns explores how in one of Harold Lloyd's most ambitious sequences, the silent-comedy legend throws his innocent “glasses” character into a death trap of a setting.

I absolutely LOVE Harold Lloyd, and this sequence is one of his best. I have the seven-DVD set that includes this film. It was costly, but I highly recommend it to anyone with the money to spare. (I'm actually watching 'Doctor Jack' as I type this, and just finished watching 'The Kid Brother' before starting it.) He was an extremely talented man, and everyone ought to know his name.

I watched the film today on the Criterion Channel. I now I have a favorite Harold Lloyd film - this one. The film is almost perfectly structured, acted, photographed, and directed. Carl Davis's score is brilliant.

@@davidparker7216 "The Freshman." I've also seen "Speedy" and, of course, "Safety Last." This film - my opinion - is better written and structured with a better blend of gags and drama.

If you've never been a fan of Harold watch this film. But first listen to David Cairns. He explains how in some ways this is the anti-Harold Lloyd film. By that I mean the last third of the movie is more film noir with contrasting lighting and shadows and horror (and a violent murder not played for laughs --so unlike a Harold Lloyd movie). Take away the cute monkey gag and our Harold is menaced by a human gargoyle who looks like he came to the movie set from another movie. A horror movie. Here no gag is going to save Harold. You feel he really is going to get killed off in the story. But even before the abandoned ship horror movie aspect is the pathos.
Yeah, we thought only Charlie C. did sadness and sorrow. Nope. When Harold's family rides off to find the bad guys they leave him behind telling him he's not man enough. Leading lady Jobyna Ralston has a heartbreaking scene with Harold who confesses his family thinks so little of him and they're right to think it. Harold hiding his face against a tree gets emotional and starts to weep. It's not played for laughs at all. Again so unlike his other films.
