Michael, I really love what you do with this channel. I also love that you're going or maybe have gone through a late onset Dead phase...because they're amazing. Your enthusiasm for the Dead makes me smile from my heart. But anyway.
I am writing because this is one of my absolute favorite stories in a song. I heard the Del McCoury version of it virst. Man, the way that they play it it really smokes. With this dude it smoulders...and that is amazing in its own right, right? I thought when I watched the video that it seemed like maybe you were misconstruing the story a bit, or at that point that it was not quite clear to you. Maybe it is sorted out by now...if not, I figured I would write how I interpret the story.
It starts off..."Said Red Molly to James: "That's a fine motor bike. A girl could feel special on any such-a-like". So...right off, you've got a woman who is not afraid to tell a dude what she's thinking, or start off a courtship, anyhow. And that's awesome. She gets it going. Then James let's her know: Hey, I've seen you around. You haven't escaped my attention. Then he hits her with one of my favorite lines: "Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme"...c'mon!
    Story continues.
James proposes. But before he allows her to say yes, he has to let her know...he's kind of a badass. He has a sordid history with the law, and he may not have left all of that behind him yet. Not only that, the very bike that they are riding, he robbed a bunch of folks to acquire!
    Story continues
Molly gets a call that James has been shot in the chest by the police and that he is in the hospital dying. She goes to be with him, she can see he is dying and starts crying. Then you get this line: "and he smiled to see her cry"...! Come on! That's such an amazing lyric. So, I take that to mean: he never had anyone really care about him, or couldn't feel it if they did anyway, so the fact that she cared this much about his spirit moving on led him to feel love and it made him smile. So he gives her the keys to his bike before he dies. But not before paying homage to his love for his specific brand of bike, and the complement of a red haired girl on his Vincent Black Lightning 1952.
Now...I know that you do an outrageously good job of letting us know what is going on with music theory. But I believe this to be a masterful bit of lyric writing, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it because I think that the lyrics alone could be worth a deep dive.
Thanks for what you do, brother. I ordinarily do not comment on things, and I know this is an outrageously long comment. Oh well. Hopefully it lands.

I used to hang with Sean when he ran a little weekly open mic at a tiny cafe in Troy, NY back in '09. One of the nicest and most down to earth guys I've met. I enjoyed watching him get really good really fast and release his Magic album. I went to the launch party and brought my parents out and they both fell in love with him. I lost them both a few years later, and remembering those nights with them watching Sean play live for a tiny packed house always brings them right back.

To truly appreciate how good this cover is you need to hear the original by Richard Thompson. A classic song performed beautifully. To take such an intricate fingerstyle performance and simplify it whilst magnifying the emotion contained within is an incredible feat. Richard Thompson's version was going to be my first request to this channel.
Edit: I just saw your video requesting links in comments so here's something to try out. If you like the lyrics and storytelling in this then you'll love beeswing:

Sean Rowe!! I'm a critical man, and a fan of Richard Thompson since back in 1973, but I have to shout, YOU OWNED THIS COVER, MAN! Really great. Really inspired, and your own honest emotional response to it is undeniable, PLUS you mastered the technique to pull it off, without losing it. That's not easy. It's the real thing. You served the song, and not yourself, and that means everything. Angels, and leather, and chrome, and your own personal flame-job on the Vincent. Pretty cool.

Well, boss. Nothing off Mr. Rowe (or you -mad props!). But I simply must insist that you explore Richard Thompson, "possessor of the magic touch", simply one of the greatest electric AND acoustic guitarists ever. AND a great songwriter. I had the fun of seeing him get really pissed at a show (electric, with full band). His monitors weren't working for a while, and when the house finally got them on, he launched into a 10 minute attack that went around the universe, never once repeating itself or quoting anyone else. His great song "Shoot Out The Lights" is a frequent similar platform for these live fireworks. Check it out, as well as his original of Mr. Rowe's cover. As always, kudos to your positivity and communication skill. Always a pleasure to see you at work. :)

I'm glad I did! You captured and explained in words so much of what I was feeling and reacting to with the video - thank you! I know this was done a couple years ago, but love that you are doing a reaction video to Sean doing this cover. I've been following Sean since the early 2000's when I first discovered his first album "27" (which can rarely be found anymore) on CDbaby. I was fortunate enough to have Sean play a backyard concert at my house in 2014 on his house tour. He finished his concert with this song. I had about 30 people over for the concert with Sean playing under the big maple tree in our backyard. Every song was fantastic, but he melted our faces off when he finished off with this track.

So, I saw this for the first time 2 or 3 years ago and have been showing this to anyone and everyone. It's actually my favourite performance on RUclips. I'm not even a Sean Rowe fan, but the lyrics, the delivery, the emotion is ...out of this world.
It reminds me of sitting by my mum's bed as she passed away and it brings back so much raw emotion that it brings me to tears every time. What performance is there that has this effect for anyone else? I mean, it's cathartic in a way, not depressing by the way! Thanks for reacting to this one. Get the lyrics and read them. Then watch the performance without pausing or playing and see how it goes...

I'd recommend reactions to Richard Thompson's "Beeswing" for an example of his fantabulous fingerpicking and heart-breaking songwriting. But you've also got his to get stuck into his unique approach to electric - perhaps on a wild wig-out like "Can't Win".

As a forager, Sean Rowe's (he pronounces it rau) are dirty from picking dandelions and mayapples in the forest. Thanks so much for picking one I hadn't heard out of Sean yet!

First of all, joining the chorus of voices screaming for you to listen to Richard Thompson's original. Second, if you're giving Thompson a listen, you HAVE to see/hear what he can do with an electric, because ye blessed Odin's gravy boat, he is from another world. Check out any live version of "Can't Win"-this one cuts off most of the song itself and jumps right to the 8-minute solo (!!!), which he manages to pull off without ever repeating himself, or anyone else on this gods' green earth for that matter: ruclips.net/video/D4Rjk8yN-Pc/видео.html

Michael, you calling a songwriter's approach of letting the words dictate the changes "visceral" and saying you really like that is pretty validating. Thanks for that! Doesn't always come off that way. I think of it as an inside-out vs. outside-in approach to building out a progression.

Sean Rowe does a great version of an impossible song. The original Richard Thompson song is a one of the greatest guitar songs ever written and the guitar is seriously impossible to replicate. Hats off to Sean for making the song his own.

This. It's my favorite thing about the song. You can hear that old Vincent roaring around Box Hill as Molly rides to escape her loss.

Here's the thing. This is a great and different version from the original. But as many people are saying, you really need to hear the Richard Thompson original version. As a guitar player you will not be disappointed. Thompson is a one off and an inspiration to many other players that have sold a lot more records than him. The first time I saw him play this song live I thought there was two guitars playing! Nope. Just RT. Check it out.

oh yeah!!! A motorcycle song! Looking forward to this one... I wonder if he has a fishing pole attached to his Vincent Black Lightning?! ...after watching the entire video, I was very disappointed by the lack of fishing from his Black Lightning. ;)
Great tune from an honest musician... no tricks, no pizzazz... just straight ahead truth in folk music.
Thanks to Kevin and Joshua for this one! Cheers !!!

Richard Thompson - the original version, Rowe - the one man wrecking machine version and Restless Kelly - the anthem band version. All great versions of a great song, but hearing RK sing this live with a thousand friends, it just doesn’t get any better. Loved how you were stopped in your tracks when he flipped from the major to flat. We’ve all been there the first time we heard too. 👍🏻

Have to pile on and insist you listen to/watch Richard Thompson. He is a great guitarist (acoustic-finger picking and electric) as well as a songwriter and singer. His career spans 50+ years and he is still creating new albums.
Sorry I can't afford to buy your stuff but I hope you listen to all of us on this point. Thanks!

Just checked the list...no Richard Thompson! The man is a legend. Iove Sean Rowe's work and it's great to see him tip his hat to probably one of the best songwriters of our time. Someone once said Richard Thompson can write songs that say more in one line than most writers can hope to say in an entire song. As for the cover, thumbs up. Definatly plenty of passion for the original I'd say but it does feel like he is using a hammer to beat the song into submission at times. Thompsons greatness lies in his ability to combine the emotional depth of his storytelling with his musicianship as one of the world's most influential players.
