    Finally some Mandolin Orange. I share the same sentiment as the guy who recommended on being appreciative of the genuine passion from Michael. Fun to watch him break these great songs down. I personally dont think Mandolin Orange have a bad song and some of the more interesting arrangements for me are “Paper Mountain”, “When She’s Feeling Blue”, & “Blue Ruin” if anyone is looking for more recommendations.

    Never thought I'd see Mandolin Orange on this page. The Paste performance is my favorite version of the song. Absolutely pertinent to these days.

  • @awsumawstun
    @awsumawstun 4 года назад +92

    I don't like a lot of this "reacting to" trend that many RUclipsrs do these days because most of them just watch or listen and make weird faces and then the video is over, but you take the time to make out their choices in songwriting and appreciate the music for what it is. Your analyses are always spot on, but I love that you understand when you run across some truly beautiful and remarkable music and sit back and enjoy it. Anyways, keep doing what you're doing, brother.

      TOTALLY agree! I'm not a musician by any means, I don't play any instrument and I think the reaction videos are just...who cares. But this guy...LOVE his videos. Don't know what it is about his videos that draw me in more than any other...maybe because he really is a musician himself, maybe his reaction feels real and genuine...first video I watched of his was reaction to Tyler Childers "Nose to on the Grindstone" and he looked like he was crying! From that point I was like " this dude understands, he gets it" beautiful, story telling music.

  • @travisschieber
    @travisschieber 2 года назад +6

    I don't play an instrument, but dude I watch your videos all the way through. You shine the intricacies in music that I can hear but don't understand. You give me a greater appreciation for all music and for that, I thank you!

    Another NC resident here who shares the same sentiment as the person who requested this. I heard this song for the first time back in ‘17. Loved it. Listened to the whole album many times. I then decided to cover this tune in a set I played in Shelby, NC. Actually playing it live I got choked up and almost cried. Weird experience but I felt like it was a long overdue apology for the way I used to behave and things I used to say. To the person who requested this, “of the times” is hitting the nail right on the head.

    • @clericus9

      The poetry of this song is amazing. In very, very few words it portrays the Confederate experience in a "from the inside" sort of way in the first verse. Then the second verse sets the listener up for a surprise-- "too much money rolled in to ever end slavery".
      The third verse's "pride has a way..." speaks to us all about our Lost Cause legacy and points to its fallacy. The fourth verse allows for the retention of being a son of the South without having to be a supporter of secession/racism---- all that, and "the day old Warren died hate shoulda gone with him" gives us an opportunity to be rid of all that mess. Such a beautiful song. And so, SO smartly crafted.

      @@Guitargate Hey buddy, I think what you're doing is great! I had another comment on this video that I dont know if you saw, but you should REALLY REALLY watch Mandolin Orange doing Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan...not even to do a video on...just for your own pleasure. It made me cry multiple times. Usually a song might make me tear up the first listen, but this one did many different times of listening to it. Its actually the first song I saw the band do and its AMAZING!!!!!!

    I play mandolin and Andrew Marlin is by far my greatest influence.
    They are now known as Watch House and are my favorite group right now.

    Incredibly refreshing to see critiques that CELEBRATE music! Love it. Can't believe you didn't comment on this guy's tremolo picking though. It has the perfect amount of swing.

    Another great NC group to check out would be Mipso. Both them and Mandolin Orange are from the Chapel Hill area (go Heels!) Three of the four members trade off on vocals across songs, solid bluegrass tunes all around. "People Change" is a personal favorite - raw, emotional, beautiful. "Louise" or "When I'm Gone" for their classic sound, "Your Body" for a peek at their upcoming album.

    I've been touting Mandolin Orange for years now, everybody who loves music should know about them. Also try Little Worlds, Waltz About Whiskey and their astounding cover of Boots Of Spanish Leather. Love them!

    Great breakdown of their performance! I knew Mandolin Orange was one of the best I've heard in terms of true talent and musicality but you did a tremendous job in explaining the method to their genius! Well done!!

    I just came across them a couple weeks ago. I've played them throughout the house while we clean, paint, play, etc... Love their sound, lyrics and all around vibe. Our 6 year old loves it and that says something. He just likes good music

    Thank you Michael! Checked these guys out for the first time because I saw your video. From my home state of NC Too! I've listened to 3 albums of theirs and I haven't found a bad tune. Great band.
