The final verse of 'In the bleak midwinter' by Harold Darke, from King's College Choir's new album 'In the bleak midwinter'.
The album reflects a Christmas that was unlike any other in recent history. Much of the music on this album was heard around the world as part of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service that has been broadcast live from King’s on Christmas Eve every year since 1930.
But for Christmas Eve 2020 in the face of a global pandemic, the continuation of this uniquely long-running tradition was not possible - not sung live or with a congregation in the Chapel as well as the global audience who have long listened from around the world. Instead, a full service, with lessons, carols, organ voluntaries and prayers, was recorded in an empty Chapel. For its millions of listeners, the broadcast meant the continuation of a Christmas tradition in a year when so many were without their friends and family, and without so much of what makes Christmas special.
This album contains music from the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols together with a selection of specially recorded tracks. It marks the beginning of a new era for the Choir of King’s College under the direction of Daniel Hyde, with this his first full album at King’s since his appointment in 2019.

one of the most christmas-est songs ever
"Christmas-est"! I like that!👍
I first saw the chapel and heard the choir in January 1971 on my first trip to Cambridge. I believe that Sir David was directing them at that time. It was such a wonderful occasion that I have returned many times for evensong during the course of three sabbaticals in Cambridge, both to pray and to listen as they prayed in song. It never gets old. The choir is a well maintained treasure.
Sir David Willcocks' arrangements made an Anglophile out of me, back in 1994. And I love the Chapel architecture as much as I love hearing the choir. If flying didn't torture my ears, I'd have visited Cambridge by now.
I am a lover of Classicals. It's not much loved here in Nigeria but after my voice broke and I started to sing low parts, it was so devastating. The only way I can remind myself of how I use to feel is to listen to youngsters like this sing. I'm 19 now and I have promised myself to visit Cambridge or England or one of these countries just to hear them sing.
I feel you.. One day to listen to them live at Christmas
Tenors and basses can sing beautifully also and there is beautiful music written for them. Don't despair.
There are communities that adore classical music in Nigeria, find them. They abound.
Rather amusing that Tom Pickard has a "mini-me" version of himself in the choir 0:39! The circle of life continues! Lovely performance by all.
사람은 인생을 살며 참회를 할때가 있어야 한다고 보는데 참회할때 이 노래가 좋은거 같다.
I'm an atheist. I love music for aesthetic reasons.
This tune is in my Top Twenty favorites. It's a zillion times times better than that dirge that Gusty-Tempered Gustav Holst composed!
❤🎼
So incredibly beautiful! I needed this today….so many thanks from way across the pond! Your voices are so incredibly soothing….. so needed in these difficult days with COVID and, unfortunately, I’m listening to this wonderful video on the night of another school shooting in America. Your voices are a balm for one’s soul. Thank you!
It truly is a bleak bleak winter for those poor families.
I'm so sorry to hear of these terrible shooting in the States. If it helps, and as you like this clip you may wish to know that the BBC broadcasts the festival and carols live from Kings College on Christmas Eve (3.00 pm British time), it may be possible to stream it via the BBC app. I hope that you have a good Christmas and best wishes for 2022.
Best wishes to you

@@sallysailor5642 it is horrible times but I'm an atheist; therefore I have no interest in reading the Bible.
Christmas ain't over till the King's College Choir sings. Many a Christmas Eve I have tuned in just before midnight. Lights in the darkness.
Christmas hasn't _started_ until KCC sings: it begins the moment a boy begins "Once in Royal David City!"
Christmas hasn't started until then.
Actually, Christmas doesn't *begin* until King's sings. After all, it's only the *first* day of Christmas 🌲!!
@@brookeggleston9314 Roighte you ahh, gov'nor!

I am so moved by these beautiful voices, enchanting harmonies and musicality of this choir, that I bought the CD immediately. Can recommend it to all of you, no Christmas without this music.

@AndrePost Tenor
I fervently agree! I've been an Anglophile since 1994. Thanks to the King's College Choir.
It looked like an opening scene of a fantasy mysterious movie. Serene.
The superior version! Way better than Holst imo
Holst's melody is awfully depressing!
Stephen Cleobury was always a very hard act to follow, but , Daniel Hyde, again perfection. My Christmas starts at 3p.m. Christmas Eve.
Beautiful🌷 greetings from a Swedish choir singer! 🇸🇪

Lindo demais!!🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵
Hogwarts castle with choir kids lol What is there to not like.
I grew up hearing Kings College Choir........ I wonder what ever happens to them in the future? The Best time or place I like to listen to this type of Real Christmas music Or Sacred Singing is in a place like the middle of a golf course late at night looking up at all the stars. Kind of like listening to the Angels sing ;)) PS AND no man made light pollution!
Sound fabulous
Oh my wow. Heaven
That is SO heavenly and beautiful !!! Thank you.

It's in my Top Ten favorites. It was also Sir Stephen Cleobury's all-time favorite, according to an article I read in 2018.
Incredible.. the setting and video are great as well.
😍❤❤
I dont know anything except that this is so beautiful
Daniel Hyde - is this the Daniel Hyde from St. Thomas/NYC? Bravo and God bless.
Si, Senora
Yes it is, He has come home as a former Organ scholar.
@@xtrahandz I was so blessed to be there at the the time I was - we had a triumvirate of extraordinary priests and the wonderful Mr. Hyde as choral director - had no idea how lucky I was, that was before everything changed.
Love from 🇺🇸
I'm American but I've been an Anglophile for 30 years. It was Sir David Willcocks' arrangements, sung by the King's College Choir, that made an Anglophile out of me after I first heard them on the radio.
So moving. ❤️
Thank you ever so much
Aye Christmas is coming
Really AMAZING!! Thanks!!
I sang that many times with the New Sussex Singers in England. In that last verse, I was always in danger of choking up, and had to concentrate hard

What can I give him poor as I am If I were a Shepard I would give a lamb, if I were a wise man I would do my part yet what can I give him , give my ♥️
Thank you for sharing.
Such a polished full smooth glorious sound the choir has. Looking forward to this year’s nine lessons and carols to experience more of this wonderful singing.

voci angeliche.
My all time favourite Carol. Only the last verse though? Well , at least it was my favourite verse.❤
Disappointed this video isnt the music complete. Its one of my favorite Christmas pieces. Thankfully it can be found elsewhere on youtube by other choirs too.
It isn't Christmas without family, Charlie Brown, preforming in my high school winter concert, and breathtaking choirs such as this 😌♥️
Sublime.
Could it be made available through Bandcamp?
Wonderful ❤️
In Ab rather than G? Sounds good!
Do you have perfect pitch William?
Wonderful
the 16' pedal in the organ at the end, from the sublime to the epiphanal.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Don't they know the beginning? What they know is rather spectacular.
Where can I find your complete version of this work?
The best choir in the world ☺️❤️
No. That title belongs to their neighbors: Trinity College Cambridge (and director Stephen Layton). It is all in the ears of the listener, isn't it? Blessed Advent, Ebenezer.
Unfortunately, I disagree. This very choir is the best.
@@evelynboateng8023 That's not unfortunate. As I said earlier, beauty is in the ears of the listener. I love KCC, too! (Don't miss Trinity's Advent Lessons and Carols, posted two days ago.) Blessed Advent to you.
Trinity the best amateur mixed voice choir, without a doubt, but can you compare a mixed choir to all-male anyway? King's now sounding pretty awesome again though, back to the heyday of Ledger
@@marks5203 you mean back to the heyday of Willcocks, whose arrangements made an Anglophile out of me in 1994. I first heard the King's College Choir on the radio then and I loved their singing and Sir David Willcocks' arrangements immediately.
So beautiful and filled with blessings and encouragement.

Belíssimo
They sound so much fuller, so much more natural. Good job
Please visit my country south korea 🇰🇷
I am so happy tho hear that King’s trebles have started to sound beautifully at last ! Congratulations to Mr Daniel Hyde ! I look forward to future recordings in other repertoires such as Renaissance music.
Thank you! For a few years, I've ached over the frail, strained sound of the king's top line. This all transformed the second Mr Hyde took the helm.
Also, I'd like them to record Mundy's Vox Patris
@@el7284 A view held by quite a large number of people.
@@ds1868 I honestly had no idea that this was the case. Usually, if I tried to bring it up, I'd be shot down immediately. Well, that's over.
Cheers to good music!
@@el7284 I didn't notice that the choir sounded less pleasant under the direction of Sir Stephen Cleobury, but I don't like that he commissioned new carols. I love TRADITIONAL music.
But at any rate, Sir David Willcocks'arrangements made an Anglophile out of me ever since I first heard them singing Sir David Willcocks' arrangements on the radio 30 years ago.
Just glorious.
