Most of the lords at the time the war started did not know about the Republic, and they were not that keen on starting it. Not because they loved peace but they were neither untied (Naga Sadow had his enemies) and because they saw that as risky. It was Naga Sadow who tricked them into joining the war by using a republic-made weapon to murder a important Sith, using this "attack" to rally the lords to his cause and start the attac. By the way in legends a "few" years (compared about the times we speak here) before the Mandalorian Wars there was also the Exar Kun Revolte, which saw a huge amount of destruction, the order almost getting destroyed.

I though he found the empire and came back to conquer the jedi because he knew they were ill prepared to take on the sith smpire and hoped to take over the republic so they had a standing chance against the sith empire. But then malack turned on him and the rest is history. Least that's what I remember

Considering all the xenophobic Human Empires throughout Galactic history, it's suprising and fortunate for Humanity that most of the other species haven't banned together as a balance wheel to take on Humanity. A charismatic/messianic Alien leader or council of major non Human races could have gone on a crusade at some point when Humanity didn't have the upper hand, or even as a reaction in self defense. Or a advanced species could have engineered a highly transmissible virus that has a high fatality rate among Humans. It would have taken out the Empire, or even the Republic during the Clone Wars (most of the CIS being Alien). And what if in addition to space whales, there are space dolphins?
