I especially like the lesson on how the strings work in relationship to the pickups! Thanks Dave for the clear explanation..... Every little bit of understanding helps...
Last Friday I went up to Solo to see Dave, he wasn't there. Let me tell you it was not a wasted trip. Awesome store! Everything you could need and more. Nice people there too. I will catch Dave in February sometime.
@@roymontero4066 I believe Dave lives in downtown area of Toronto. Solo is in a suburb city of Vaughn in the neighborhood of Concord, just outside of Toronto city limits.
I had a 1999 American Deluxe Tele before the S1 switching, with an ash body and Tortoise Celluloid binding, The grain in the wood looked Bluish gray as it aged.
And another terrific video. I was hoping you would have had to work on the first fret height on the nut, as this is the one thing I still have to do with mine. Great info otherwise and very entertaining.
D'Addario has action string gauges that I think are better than you know who. It also has metric measurements and they're a little thicker too. Use mine all the time.
Hours and hours of watching Dave I can almost keep my guitar playable now (ok, I really should learn to play it as well). Two questions (probably derived from missing bits -sorry Dave) 1. 12th or 17th fret for measuring string height? and, 2. Are all the strings set at the same height as each other, so as to follow the fretboard radius or are the 'higher' strings set closer to the fret board? Many thanks for all your work. Paj
12th fret for measuring string height. No, the strings are not all the same height. Use a radius gauge for the right height. On Teles it's a 9.5 inch radius. The low and high E are the same, the D and G are the same and the A and B are the same height. A set of radius gauges are less than $10USD and well worth it. Set the string height properly and it will play like butter.
I know SOLO is Canadian brick & mortar but I'm in Winnipeg not TO so I'll keep using their online service. So, listen up, when is SOLO going to get their fecking HOSCO TLNF10 EDGE CUT NUT FILES SETS in? I've been waiting forever! I even tries to do an end run and contacted Hosco direct and they told me to WAIT!! Put in a good word for me Dave. C'mon buddy ;)
Dave, really like your videos. Do you like any of the Solo bass kits? Thinking about screwing one up as a project. Not going to screw it up intentionally, but realistically it would be my first kit assembly, so I'm anticipating a learning experience. Anyway, recommendations?
It's a sweet Tele, binding, belly cut , and WTF switch. 4/64's , it is Dave's World after all. 3/32's ahh shit! What the F is that switch Dave? Hope all is well, ✌💀👽🎸

Hi Dave, what height (what size gauge) did you use to measure the curvature of the neck (after you put the strings on?) What height should it be at the 7th fret to bottom of string?
a 64th equals .0125 thousands 5 64ths equals .0625 the thickness a US quarter is .069 thousands,so that being said,you want a quarters thickness at the 12th fret bass E side.
I'll be looking forward to the videos from Solo guitars feb 7th, the day before here in Ireland we try to vote out our crap government. Good stuff as ever Dave.
The tools from the Ohio place are always great quality, it's just the prices that confuse me. How they can ask $40 for a string height gauge, I don't know. Maybe, since they're ostensibly a supplier of guitar shops, there's some markup because they figure if you're making money with the tools, you'll pay more. I don't know. As I said though, always good quality stuff.
Hey Dave, I’m a bit of a setup n00b and would like some advice. I recently bought an Ibanez for my birthday. The thing is great but the saddles seem to be put in all f*cked from the factory and both the action and intonation suck. Now here’s where I’m at with it: I want to set it up myself but the problem is that my neck has a 400mm (15.75”) radius but string and neck radius gauges, even from “those assholes that sell overpriced shit”, seem to only come in either 15” or 16” radius. So I need your advice: what gauges would you use to have the strings to closely match the neck radius? Or if you be chance happen to have measurements close to stock, I’d appreciate that. I currently put in 9-42 strings but I’ll be switching them back to “like factory” 10-46 (rookie fuckup, I know). Anything you can tell me that’d help me to unfuck it would be greatly appreciated. Guitar is an Ibanez Gio RG Mikro.
I run into the same problem. Some of my guitars are 13.7 radius. Do you have a string action gauge? What I do is what Dave says, set each string at the same height and go from there.
Josh Strain he may, or he may not. The least he’s going to do is ignore it or tell me to go f*ck myself… I don’t know. But he did say in previous videos that a comment, like and subscription helps so… here I am doing all three.
Hey Dave, will they let you vlog from Solo's repair shop on Friday's? Perhaps you can include some footage of happy customers playing and commenting on their new setups and repairs? I retrieved my shit from the lost and found. I'm much better now. How many smidges in a 1/64?
Can see a reflection from the switch plate and pick guard of a bright blue sky out the window ! I though Canukistan was having sever shnot shtorms this week ?
Somehow, watching Dave setup a guitar is almost as relaxing and therapeutic as watching Bob Ross bang off a painting with a dozen happy little trees.
Something about those blade gauges satisfies my soul.
Bob Ross is not grumpy☺

you make it look so simple, but if not done in the right order like you do you have a mess. I learn every day watching the master Dave. thanks
Never been a big Tele fan , but that is a nice one !! Great combo of suburst color , rosewood fingerboard and binding . Classy
Dave you add serenity to my world, just to know there is a guy out there who know WTF he is doing.
Gotta love a bound body Tele! Nice set-up, Dave! Thanks!
Love your no-nonsense approach, Dave. Keep it up daddy-o.
That was a beautiful Telecaster!
Thanks Dave. You've taught everything I always wanted to know about setting up my Strat. Yep. I didnt know a thing. Great videos.
Dave snuck a physics lesson into this video along with the usual tips and commentary. Keep up the entertainment Dave.
That tele sounds wonderful.

Nice tele. I'm usually a Gibson guy but really nice ax.
Those ass one switches in a guitar are as reliable as a Yugo was in cars. :-)
Does it make any difference to check string Heights at the 12th or the 17th fret or is that just a preference. Or is there science.
I assume the math behind it designates it to be the sweet spot. Maybe because thats were the relief tends to end?
Ah that makes sense. I always check it at the 12th 4/64ths but I get what you're saying. So at the 12th I may be checking in the dip.
17 Fret for Fender because it a longer scale neck and 12 Fret Gibson because it has a short scale neck.

can you suggest a fix for a slight crack on the neck binding so as it not to get worse

Do it, you won't regret it...
yes! great idea! i love mine!!
Good video, but wondering how many days you wore that shirt? Lol.
Killer intro!!
How do you judge pickup height?
Jeffrey Rivers You fret at the last fret and then measure the distance between the top of the pole and the string
Hi Dave, what height (what size gauge) did you use to measure the curvature of the neck (after you put the strings on?) What height should it be at the 7th fret to bottom of string?
Dave sets the neck relief from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string at .012
And a capo at the first fret.
2 32 nd .lol @ the 17th fret.
