Well Dave , I just checked out a video of you jamming with what I assume is your band ...Luke and The Apostles..the song is Tika..live at Hughs room Oct 11 2014 ( for those who want to check it out) I must say I was very impressed Dave ...really cool jam your bass playing was great !
Dave, I'm certain that you've answered this a million times, but what are you using to gauge the distance between the pickup pole and the string? It "looks" like the elbow of some small allen wrench. If so, which one? FYI: I live in Richmond VA and we have a small town just west of use called.....and this is true.....Goochland. Lots of horses. Cheers!
They're NOT Allen Wrenches. They're bent Brass Rods, 4 on a steel key ring, all are different diameters: 1/8", 3/32", 1/16" & 1/32". The 1/8" and 3/32" are 'almost always' used to set your Pickup Heights (Clearance between the bottom of string & top of the POLE PIECE, not the PU Cover); 1/8" on Bass Side, 3/32" on Treble Side. BUT!.. here's the neat thing I found: If you have a hard time seeing your Ruler when measuring the String Heights at the 17th Fret (Fender recommends 4/64" for Strats & Teles) you can use the 1/16" Brass Rod as your 'Feeler Gage' - 1/16" = 4/64". This is especially helpful if you have bad lighting in your work or you just have old eyes. I've never seen Dave do this but as he says, he likes to set string heights at 5/64", and that There Are No Rules, Only Guidelines".
Thanks for the video. Seems like Fender is following in Gibson's footsteps and selling guitars that are not properly assembled but priced as though they are.
Depends on the fretboard radius. On a vintage 7.25” fretboard, you’d likely have to raise the 1st string a bit more to keep it from choking when you bend the string.
I don't think that is a brand new Tele. They eliminated the belly cut in 2017, except on the Elite, and those also have a bound edge, is that guitar is probably over 3 years old.
I honestly can't figure what the string gauge has to do with the string height. Whatever the gauge is, the distance between the frets and the strings is the same...
Super question, I’d be curious to what Dave thinks... I used to be a real tele traditionalist and have over fifteen tele’s from different years and was very much against the individual bridge saddles, uh, until about eight or nine years ago. Just because it was stupid cheap, I picked up a 2005 mexican tele with every intention of flipping it but after setting it up and playing it, it has become tele number one in the stable. It has a great neck and a slab body with no contour cuts and is strung up thru-body with the six adjustable saddles. I think I love the bridge because it’s so easy to set and keep in tune. I have them all too, the ones with the original barrels, the ones with compensated barrels, brass compensated barrels, etc, and have totally changed my thinking on them and I personally think they are great. They also have a flat mounting plate instead of the original mounting plates with the turned up edges so it’s a bit more comfortable to play with.
Buddy Martin thanks for that and good to hear it from a Tele lover who has tried many on for size and knows what they like. It would be great to give this individual saddled red beauty Dave is working on a go and I am quite sure I'd love it even though remaining the three saddle traditionalist for unknown and unfathomed reasons.
Scott if I may jump in, yes the single coil pickups cover a narrower section of the string and not having a hum cancelling design does allow higher frequencies through to the amp. The Tele's brighter thinner sound may be grating to some ears if played alone for example (although, Ed Bickert did some sweet warm jazz on his Tele) once you get single coils into a band they really shine. The amp used is a huge factor too. There's a RUclips guy, Timothy Lerch, interesting videos and kind of a Tele guru. Very sweet tone. ruclips.net/user/telebasher
@UCWnzpbHXwUFdTnwFpkHYdXQ Thanks. But even the neck pickup sounds thin to me compared to my Strat. Are the pickups any different than the neck and bridge pickups in a Strat - thinner wire, or different magnets or something?
After some more research, I've found info that says the Tele bridge pickup is a taller and longer than a Strat's, which allows for more winding and therefore more output. It was originally designed for a lap steel. And maybe most importantly, the Tele bridge pickup is mounted on a steel plate, which adds to its twangy-ness.
I wish Gibson and Gibson copies would do that with the Les Paul, put that belly cut in.I wonder if I could get one custom cut to match the radius of my gut.
Hello Davey, another video, so soon?! Great output, and content. Glad you're here, and healthy. You're losing your curmudgeonly ways, but not your sense of humor. Ain't that sumthin'? Cheers, M'Brutha...
Ridiculous comment of the day here; I don’t trust a red guitar, everytime I’ve had one it’s an automatic fail. Cursed colour for me. Serious business, what was on yer sammich Dave?
4:44 why does this guy always assume that everyone has to have exactly the same string height as James Burton? Or exactly the same string height at all? Some people like a higher action and some people like a lower action. Apparently this guy doesn't understand that.
Pretty thoughtless thing to say. He’s at home, not driving, not operating anything more dangerous than a feeler gauge. He didn’t seem drunk to me but what if he is? Plenty of other content out there for you.
Of the hundreds of Guitar tuning videos I have consumed, Yours, by far helped the best!
Dave I love how you go back to the basics for the ones that haven't watched your site, it is all soooo good!
I'm in love with that Telecaster!😘
The finish alone is amazing!
I'm drooling on my shirt.
Hope all is good Dave!
PEACE 💀👽🎸🎶🎵
Is that a transparent red? I love the combination of the black pickguard, the maple neck with that finish.
TransLUCENT red. The difference between a clear day and a hazy day. One can see the grain underneath, but not clearly.
The tint on the neck is PERFECT 👌🏾
Really great tone on that thing! I'm not a guitarist, but if I would be, I'd get this one.

Love the drift into Lighthouse 'One Fine Morning'.
Dave another great basics of TELE! LOVE THIS VIDEO! THANKS MUCHLY!
Love it, thanks, a way of doing things that I can understand
Ooooo that's purty!
💃🏻
Sounds great Dave! Nice set up, nice guitar, Thanks for the video bro!! 🎸🎸👍
Shame sh*t, different pile?!? My new favorite phrase! :)
I love Dave's style of guitar playin
Nice bright red tele ☺
Gotta love a Tele
The Sleestak shirt will always get a Like from me....
Dave great msg to the world . Love it 😁
She’s a beauty 👍🏼
Man I need to send my Telecaster thinline deluxe to you for set up.Great Job. P.S I loved James Burton i too.TCB baby.
I have the same guitar colour and all. It's great.
That's a nice tuner you have.
That really was a good vid. Succinct, while explaining/showing all the relevant procedures and explaining the reasons.
Roy (Buchanan) would be proud to play that axe!

StewMac gauges made of brass so not magnetic different sizes

SSDP! A new acronym for government employees. Same shit, different pile. Good one Dave!
The Fender spec is not all strings consistent height, they have the first string 1/64th lower than the 6th.

Nice guitar. No nut check or was it off camera?
New made in the US. Can understand the neck relief possibly out but the bridge was way out! Or is that factory spec? Or did some dealer f with it?
5:35 K so......... made me want queso dip and tacos. LOL
Guzinta- 4/64”. 4 guzinta 64 sixteen times. 4/64” = 1/16”. That’s how ya guzinta!
Yay Tele!,been a while
Think of all the wacky, funny stuff Dave says and then add 5 or 6 beers......
I knew it...sandwich time!
"A gazinta" 😂 Wow, how big is that?
I find a 'smidgeon' is slightly smaller than a 'tadge', but larger than a 'smitherine'.
Any experiences with Ibanez PS120???? I just ordered one and wanted you valued advice
Yo Dave! Nice work! How are your eyeballs doing, man?
I would like to see a video where the truss rod is broken and you fix that?
That is one sexy guitar!
I honestly can't figure what the string gauge has to do with the string height. Whatever the gauge is, the distance between the frets and the strings is the same...
Hey Dave! What's your preference, a 3 barrel compensated saddle or 6 individual saddle?
Great question!

Hey I have the same color telecaster but I have a rosewood fingerboard
What do you charge for a setup and wiring in a 5 Way super switch on a Squier CVC?
"First thing we're going to do...have a sandwich." YES.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the "sandwiches" the Dave has on his breaks are in liquid form and come wrapped in a glass bottle...! He he
@@haqq4257 Barley Sandwich lol
Yoooo dave!
Great set up Dave!are you loosing weight your looking good,Cheers.
Nice one Dave a great video to watch thanks in advance sir 👍
GAZINTA can U say that word boys & girls sure, Sure U can : )
Jethro Bodine
You're early... 😎
Dave this was like a tutorial on set up. Are you OK? Or are you trying for an Educator tax exemption or somethin'?
Teleiscious!
whats this specific colour called?
Hands down the shiniest guitar to ever grace your shop.
@MomoTheBellyDancer I did! OK second shiniest.
Shouldn’t the string height of the high e be less than the low e?
3/32's is less than 1/8
Dick Dastardly ?
That’s what a guitar sounds like.
Sorry, but I've never been a fan of the Tele sound - it just sounds plinky and thin to me. Is it the pickups?

A Gazinta is one flaveth of a blivet.

The ESP/LTD EC series have belly cuts. Though not enough of one, IMO.
Guzinta: The old math. 3 guzinta 9 3 times.

Give him a Rickenbacker Bass to work on and you'll him get curmudgeonly again real quick.
@@jagoff62 LOL... Funny 'cuz it's true.. 🤣👍
If you Unicycle you only have have one tyre.
I KNOW GAZINTAS!!! 1 GAZINTA 2, 2 GAZINTA 3, 3 GAZINTA 4, 4 GAZINTA 5 ETC.................
Actually, I don't 2 GAZINTA 3 is one of the GAZINTAS. 4 GAZINTA 5 isn't a Gazinta either. 1 Gazinta 2 is a GAZINTA / 2 GAZINTA 4 is a GAZINTA.
Ridiculous comment of the day here; I don’t trust a red guitar, everytime I’ve had one it’s an automatic fail. Cursed colour for me.

You pay a premium for an American made Telecaster and it need a setup right out of the box? That’s BS! 😡
Always the case over here in blighty. Just that, some don't notice.
First.
All the ads are NRA...whats up with that....

Yep, sounds drunk. I’m switching over to Stew-Mac vids.
I hate telecasters. Never understood why anyone liked them. to me, they're not real guitars.
Are you kidding
