Great seeing Dave play his old '72 P-Bass at the end of the vid. His video from a million years ago when he rebuilt it was one of the many reasons I subscribed to his channel. Do yourself a favor kids and go back in the archives and watch that series. Time well spent. :-)
I love watching dave, he's kinda like that cool uncle or grandpa that you hang out with and crack a beer while working on a car or wood working together.
Well I'm sitting here playing my Fender Starcaster, which looks identical, except my beautiful flame maple neck has a maple cap, and I put a tortoiseshell HSS pickguard on it. The Neck is Everything! It's a Fender made in China neck, but I don't know if it was assembled in China but for a $140 base model I got in a pawn shop for $70, its the sweetest playing guitar I own. Thanks, I floated my bridge, but I didn't know about the Blocks.
Great video Dave! I was just watching the show How It's Made, and they were showing how Goodin electric guitars are made at one of their factories. They did everything to spec but they did that GOOCHED job with the trem. springs!!!!! They send them out from the factory that way!!
This would be a cool add on. Dave's videos are the gold standard, so I hesitate to suggest stuff. His background, skills and care for the product is evident in the video improvements over the years. Of course, anything you add takes time and work to keep up. While I also liked the mad man of Goochville, his current style sets a great vibe. If he starts talking about happy string trees - he has gone too far. :) One suggestion I have piggy backs on your suggestion. I wish we could get him a better amp for the basement (roland bass cube?). He works his tech magic and gets these instruments maxed out. They kinda deserve a proper demo with good sound (direct out to a beachtek av box). He already knows the licks. Just pick one from the past and let it flow. Maybe tie it to the style of instrument? Dave is pretty good on the 6 string and the Ytube demo bar is pretty low. Suggestion 2 requires more work. He does such a good job of cleaning the instrument, it would be cool if he took a handful of digital photos and gave it the Burns editing treatment with slow zooms, pans and fades. Not sure every gouched squier deserves it, but it would be a cool add. Some of us will never see these rare instruments and it would be a chance to show them off. While he could get a formula going and repeat it - this would add production time. One of the best part about Dave's channel is his frequency.. (ME: NEW VIDEO!. Yes.) Dave knows his limits and what he wants to do- so we must defer and just be thankful. Bad idea #3 = $$. Dave's basic luthier tools! Dave makes this stuff look so easy and logical, it makes you want to do it too. I spent @ $75 on luthier tools in the last 6 months.. Would "Dave's tools" turn him into Stew? He could be the anti-Stew.
OK Dave, I built a Parts Stratocaster off eBay. The neck is a 2003 Made in Mexico Maple neck with the truss rod nut at the nut end. I went through half a dozen 4 mm Allen wrench’s (very cautiously like you have taught) and none of them fit. So, I had a set of torqx head wrenches and one fit perfect. Have you ever seen this before?
I know what you mean about those cheap black jack socket wrenches. I chucked mine in the bottom of my toolbox pretty soon after I got it. BUT a last minute “Oh shit it's come loose” just at the end of a job made me reach for it. With a little determination (and a shed load of pressure on the plug) I got it to work without rotating the jack. Most of the time when I go for it now, it works. Occasionally there's just no option but to go back in there. I'd like to see a wedge based expanding clamp version. Something with a little more grip.
Dave i want to thank you.....why because i learned enough from you to make a nice living from setting up guitars people buy blind and when they arrive they are a piece of shit but with what i learned watching you im able usually to send them away with a usable guitar....one gem i will tell you about is a guy brought his dads gibson les paul standard in after his father died he inherited it anyway after id set it up i checked serial numbers so i could tell this guy what he had little did i know what id just set up was a1958 LES PAUL STANDARD i thought it was an aged custom shop or a 1970s guitar so under his bed he had a $275,000 vitage beauty it was immaculate anyway he sold it bought an appartment a new car and a black les paul custom totally classic moment.

Whatever , it is being subjected to recording in a couple of weeks - “ live by the humbucker , die by the humbucker ! Have a marvellously wonderful one ! Nick in Sunny Stoke
I was offered a 57 model from this series. Heavy and tone dead so no sale. But a good one is worth keeping for life. That's the problem with used guitars, the deuces accumulate!
Why is it that on strats (at least mine) the whammy bar still has play in it - sort of wobbles within the hole. This is with the little black spring in it. You'd think after 60 yrs they could figure it out without the standard "put some teflon tape on it". I'm Btw, some of us have that same problem but that's for another video.
Love your videos, Dave! Very informative. Quick question. Would it be better to put the string lube on the bridge and nut before the strings are installed? Seems to me that it would be hard for the lube to get under the strings when under tension. Please set me straight if this idiotic!
Good Job!, One quick question, if you don´t mind, what hex wrench did you use to measure the height of the pickups, you passed under de strings on top of the pole pieces? You used one for the trebble and other for the bass side, what size are they?. Thanks in advance!
i use a process where i loosen all six and then move your trem bar up and down while screwing each screw in until you feel it start to touch the trem then back off a hair and its perfect.

@@tomkirk6942, that's why teles are better. Taking off a neck is kind of a big deal. I don't like to do it if I don't have to. Those four screws are pretty darn critical.
