Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.
Question, if your tellin, Was this Mexico or near the 9..... I have a smaller boat and can only do the Upper 9 on good days. I atleast want a Yellowtail
A couple of reasons from what I understand (not an expert) 1. The jigs are very heavy so if you get slack in the line a lot of times the can fall right out... Especially if you've been fighting a while. 2. The fish tend to swim with the boat a bit more so you can get them close to up and down then finish the fight with the boat out of gear. You see a lot of big pelagic trolling videos that use this method. Especially for wahoo.
You’re one lucky guy. I also went out on Saturday trolled from the 371 to the 425 no action or paddies anywhere. Also didn’t see any boats out there…. Where were you guys fishing that day?
Yeah they were further west it seemed like and running north HARD. We followed them up with the fleet about 10 miles. The fleet was stop and go all day not sitting on any schools.
@@mike_Craig4500 All good! It got the job done! Was thinking about grabbing one of them so was interested to see you trolling with it. I don't have K's of $$$ to have this massive arsenal of rods and reels...tight lines!
The Coronados have been cold and dirty water lately. Better chance offshore. Hopefully that'll change soon but everyone right now is driving right past the islands to fish kelp pattys and tuna offshore
Cool video! My unsolicited $.02 turn the clicker on the reel off amd youll have a better audio experience for the watcher. Was driving me crazy. Lol. Other than that, I enjoyed the video. 👍
It keeps their head pointed towards the boat after the initial run. Then you slowly crank them in! I was going to fast but just idling is plenty. Also these jigs are huge so it doesn't allow the line to slack up and fall out.
It is a straight tie direction to the lure, no crimps, no wire leader. In this case I'm using a wind on floro leader, but heavy mono will be just fine.
Had them staggered at 240ft, and on at about 200 so they don't get tangled. Traveling about 13 knots. Thanks! Been working on trying to get some unique shots.
Nice, GJ and way to slay ‘em! We were also out there on Saturday. Started troll around the 226, down to 302 then turned west out towards 230 and San Salvador Knoll. Not a single hit on madmacs.
Never in my life have i seen anyone keep the motor running at the same trolling speed long after you have hooked up. You might have caught both fish if you would have put the engine in neutral. Are you trying to post a video of what not to do?
Cabo , this technique works well to land larger tuna but needs to slow down the speed you just want the forward momentum to be enough to keep his head coming To the boat , I’m sure they will figure it out soon enough..
Maybe not for offshore, but definitely for the islands (at least this is what the SAC website says: "Vessels must be imported when visiting Mexican territory, which includes a 12-mile diameter from any Mexican island."). I figure $90 for 10 years of not having to worry about it is good peace of mind either way.
I don’t understand why people fight fish with boat in gear running- all they does is make it 10x harder to reel the fish in. Do you see any pro commercial bluefin fisherman do it? No, they actually back up on the fish.
My first time trying this method m it is weird, but it's very common with high speed trolling for wahoo and other pelagics. The jigs are heavy and apparently have a tendency to fall out of slack is in the line. Also the fish swim with the boat and you slowly crank em in until they get up and down.
Why they do that and to understand why’s it’s done is because your using the boat to stir the fish to you keeping his head coming to the boat and not allowing the tuna to get slack and into circling on its side . You drive the boat down swell slow ahead in and out of gear and getting the fish along side the boat than gaffing said fish just makes it easier . On bigger tuna this works well unless you just want to fight it up and down possibly break off and your arms being sore for days … I fish smarter not harder ..

Fishing with SD, ALL RIGHT!! GREAT DAY Thank you
damn put the boat in idle after yall are hooked up screaming staying at 5-8 knotts the whole time lmaooo after 5 minutes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
was wondering why the boat was still in gear? is it a strategy to keep this lines tight?
way too fast gotta just be barely in gear
Nice! First report on the madmacs this season, its going to be a good season.
So stoked to have one on the boat already. Looking forward to things heating up!
Hey I love it, great video! As a San Diegan trying to figure out this fishing game I appreciate your honesty and knowledge share. See you out there!
Thanks man! Glad to know others are getting out there and enjoying the great outdoors. See you on the water!
Throttle up the boat some more maybe you’ll pull the other hook
Definitely learned a lot since first time trying the madmacs. We'll get it dialed in
Looks like they are trying to drown the fish
no shit.
The guy with the beard may want to stick with trolling.

Excellent advice! I always forget until I watch the video... Need to get into a better habit of turning it off
@SD Kook haha right on brother you got a new subscriber!
Why do you guys don’t stop the boat while y’all reeling em in ?
It keeps their head pointed towards the boat after the initial run. Then you slowly crank them in! I was going to fast but just idling is plenty. Also these jigs are huge so it doesn't allow the line to slack up and fall out.
What type of camera do you use? Thanks
I have a GoPro 8 and I just started using an Insta360 X3. It's awesome.
amazing video. Nice work.

Are you tying the madmac to mono of are they on a steal leader then to mono
It is a straight tie direction to the lure, no crimps, no wire leader. In this case I'm using a wind on floro leader, but heavy mono will be just fine.
What size treble hook you guys replace the Madmac 200 with?
4/0 xxxstrong owner hooks
Sweet fishing. If I want to fish out of San Diego, it’s going to cost WAY more to travel round trip.
It's a destination for a lot of people! Lucky to have it in my back yard.
He needed to keep the rod tip up and keep steady pressure on the fish similar to what you were doing.
how far out did you have the mad mac and how fast were you trolling them, Grate camera action.

Yeah it died after 10am. Not sure what time you were out there but we were in the same zone. Trolled for 4 more hours with no bites.

Yes, 5/0 xxxstrong mustard treble hooks. And I believe 450lb owner split rings.

I was using both the 200mm and the 160mm size. Both got bit.

We were running a Penn Fathom 60, first gen and a Shimano speed master 16, which was a little light on line capacity for the task.

how fast do you troll the MM for BF ?
12 to 15 knots.

10 miles west of 302

Yes, and a Mexican import permit for the boat.
@@SDKook I’m pretty sure you don’t need an import permit if you leave out of SD and never dock in MX

BFT are notorious for swimming at the boat which causes slack line and spit hooks- keeping the boat in gear counters it.
