One day we'll get an Andromeda sequel... one day...
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I, for one, LOVE the fact that there was a lot to do in Andromeda. It was in part what made my experience so special. I loved the side quest hell that I was stuck in for a whole month of playing the game. I know there's a lot to improve in this one, but I wouldn't trade the ability to do so much stuff outside the main storyline. To me, it was what made the game so full.
Also, I will have to disagree on the "aging up Ryder" point.

I didn't mind the amount of work either, only that it was possible to screw up/bug some missions if you didn't do things in the order that the developers had intended (i.e. it wasn't truly open in narrative and progression). Clearly the intention was that you would be hopping between planets and systems and hubs like crazy to do 1 thing and then leave again, when it makes more sense that since you spent a lot of fuel to go somewhere, of course you're going to do as many tasks as possible while you're there. But if you do this systematically, you get bugs and inconsistencies. If they had taken more time with it, they probably could have made it work though. The content itself is good enough IMO.

Great analysis! I appreciated Mac's honesty with the team's process on making Andromeda. It definitely felt like quantity over quality, and I do think that an Andromeda sequel would have benefited the storytelling immensely. Gamble tweeting about Andromeda being involved in ME5 gives me hope that the Tempest crew's story can continue.

    Another very cool vid.
I held off watching the latest ME trailer until I'd finished Andromeda and having recently watched it, there's what strikes me as references to Andromeda all over that thing. The spot where the hooded asari picks up the N7 fragment suggests pretty strongly to Voeld and one of the overarching themes of Andromeda was all the odd stuff scattered throughout the various worlds that possibly shouldn't be there, but that everyone, including the Angarans, were at a loss to explain a mechanism by which it could be.
One of the better things Andromeda did was to develop further a number of directions for future installments. I did a community post or two on the game, but it struck me that they clearly meant to shift the series away from the Reapers and the trilogy, aside from easter egg references, hence why we have a realization of what might conceivably happen with century ships from a far more technologically developed system, which was also kinda sorta referenced with the Prothean statis pods and such. The Kett bearing at least a passing resemblance to the Protheans is also a matter of no minor interest, with perhaps the Protheans (or at least one segment of them) being the actual hidden baddies, perhaps in a misguided repopulation drive, a theme which plays sort of endlessly across all the games in most of the species. This would be an interesting twist, given that the Reaper threat is on time scale fairly far removed from the trilogy and Andromeda. Then again, the 50K cycle was probably shattered by Shepard, whichever the choice.
There's a lot of potential to cross the beams with Andromeda and the trilogy, possibly vis-a-vis the Quarians and Geth, particularly since the Geth could easily make a 600 year trip and not need to be put in cryo for any of it AND potentially remember the history of the trilogy, if they decide to make any of it canon as it relates to future games. The Quarian century ship message seemed to me to be more a prelude to a sequal standalone game, rather than a DLC. It's too big for an add-on, unless they had a sequel ready to go fairly quickly after putting out a DLC.

I liked Ryder being so carefree. He or she was not a hardened military soldier. I played as Scott, and I'm pretty sure he said he was guarding a Mass Effect relay for a living. The dude was a security officer. Obviously he's not going to be this incredibly stoic, driven, and self-motivated person, he's never had the formative experience to make him into that. Andromeda does that. If Ryder got a second game, I'm almost certain we would have seen that.
It was my biggest grievance with Shepard. He had an incredibly established backstory from the beginning. I was plopped into the boots of this career military badass, which was awesome, but they're not great boots to try and build incredible stories to grow Shepard in. They were, largely, stagnant. The difference with Andromeda & Ryder being dummy powerful due to SAM but not understanding the weight of that power is that he has somewhere to grow. He can learn and experience the age old "with great power, comes great responsibility" as he did in Andromeda, and then continue to live up to that responsibility.

andromeda was not a bad game, i actually liked the open world it was beautiful and combat was fun too. the weird facials and movements made me more laugh than mad so that was ok by me. my biggest issue was that the characters felt shallow, i never got a real connection to them. while i was crying in certain parts of the trilogy i didnt care at all if my mates in andromeda live or die and that killed the mass effect feeling for me. but i would be more than willing to give another part a chance if they improved on that end

Thanks for this video. I hadn't seen that interview before. Good stuff. I think an Andromeda sequel would have been amazing too. There were kernels of good story in Andromeda, but they were all left as hints in the background. All the things the fans found most interesting were left unexplored in favor of introducing us to the new world, which frankly wasn't as compelling. The Kett just don't cut it compared to the ME franchise's other baddies. I would blow them away and use the opportunity to introduce some truly weird and frightening shit. It's a whole new galaxy after all. Should we really expect bipedal hominids to be dominant there as well? Look at the old Star Treks and how imaginative they were with alien concepts.

While what he says does resonate, and feels genuine, I'm still kinda glad he and Casey are no longer at the company. The amount of ego required to just cut out the rest of the writing team for the ending of ME3 can't be healthy for the workspace. That said, I'm glad they got to help shape the future of the game, while also letting someone else take control though. Despite my misgivings for the both of them, they ARE good at what they do.

  • @TheFallenAdonael
    @TheFallenAdonael Год назад +1

Add to the unpopular opinions,, but I loved the newness of ME:A. I came into the trilogy about two years after ME3's original release, so I was a bit overwhelmed with the depth of story I had to catch up on, considering I started with ME2 thanks to a pc sale at the time. Shepard was already a beloved character, already had a story told, but Andromeda? Ryder was sparkling new, a way to get my own fresh start with the series without having to dive through lore to understand.
Sure, I knew what the whole Mass Effect story was, thus leading to the Helius Cluster's events and I wasn't bedazzled by 'ooh, space travel' upon clicking new game- but Ryder felt like me at my entrance to the fandom- somewhat knowledgeable, excited to get going, intrigued by the shiny bits, and absolutely needing coffee upon awakening (that hasn't changed, no).
    Yes, plenty of fetch quests.
But the combat! It's free from the constraints of the trilogy! No more having to play wack-a-mole with Shepard's gunplay (unless I want to), but I can go full assassin mode if I'm in that mood. I'm too scared for my sanity to claim what in particular the majority didn't care for, thus the hatred of ME:A, but there are quite a few who love the game for what it is- a new beginning in a galaxy that we have to make our home.

Mass effect is one of my favorite games of all time.... That we all remember what happened with Mass effect 3 ending and even though later they fixed it to make it more passable... It was still very disappointing but now we know the reasons why was because Mass effect team had a deadline to make and they rushed to make the ending... Now they have all the time in the world to make this Mass effect really a great one and I rather wait longer than have a game that was rushed... And also a huge disappointment with Mass effect Andromeda... But it was due to that our expectations were very sky high... But if you really think about it and actually give it a chance that Mass effect Andromeda is actually a pretty decent game.... For one thing The game is really massive and it has so many side quests... The story of the Pathfinder Ryder fit cell in a ship and was asleep for $600 years with others trying to find a new home is a pretty good storyline... But if there's one thing that Mass effect Andromeda has better than other Mass effect games is the sex scenes...when your a male ryder and you romance Cora Harper.... You actually see them having sex or make love should I say...... We also know that there's going to be a Mass effect TV series as well and if they can do it right then we're talking about the next best show.. but as for right now bioware needs to hit a home run with not just the next Mass effect game but dragon age dreadwolf..

In my opinion, MEA is excellent, graphics, weapons, battle methods, characters, many planets, a long way to go in the game, well, fabulous, very good there Mac Walters. The heartbreak of the public, in my opinion, occurs when the game is delivered with many flaws, mainly the faces of the characterizations, we were used to going from low to high in ME1, 2 and 3, recognizable faces like Ivonne Strahovsky, Charly Scheen , Mark Vanderloo etc. instead MEA only faces created and poorly created in the first installment. There was also a lack of more interaction between the characters between the landing stages of the Tempest. We must also consider that the timeline between the ME and MEA saga was quite excessive, how we lacked something in between, and logically we miss the Quarians, the geth, now friendly and other species. The Ketts, magnificent intergalactic enemies, nothing to say. What is certain is that I cannot imagine in which time line or with which characters the next installment will be unleashed, tremendous work ahead of the Bioware team and tremendous expectations to be met for all lovers of the saga, I have no doubt it's going to be amazing.

I agree with a lot of this. Your MEA wishlist is largely the same as mine. Those deficiencies all contributed to making the game really not feel like a ME game to me. Would a sequel have helped? Possibly, but I really didn't want one and I doubt too many people, except the dedicated hardcore MEA fans did either. We won't get a MEA sequel but I do expect the MEA narrative to somehow fold into the mainline series now going forward. I'm fine with that as long as it doesn't detract from trying to get the MW galaxy narrative back on its feet.
I have a lot of respect for Mac. He took the brunt of the ME3 ending reaction but irrespective of any feelings I have towards that he still left the franchise as a massive net-positive contributor to the franchise.

Good video but I completely disagree with MEA having as many issues as people said. I never had a quest glitch on me, including that one towards the end of the game where you prove yourself to that spec op Angara guy.
As someone who still wants to play again as The Warden, I empathize with people not wanting to move past Shepard but think people need to get over Shepard. Realistically, Shepard probably can't do much in the way of combat anymore because of all those broken bones, missiles to the face and head trauma; physical and mental. Besides, Shepard probably wants to rest. No one is ever going to replace Shepard; that was the entire point. Shepard was unique. It's like they never played ME2 where they spent billions to bring back the original Shepard because no one, not even a clone, could replace Shepard! MEA was a great start to an entire new set of mysteries. Now because of all the haters and I believe it was a deliberate hate fest started to harm BioWare, we will probably never know the answers which really bothers me. So the facial animations were not great but Harry Potter Legacy rolled out with the exact same ones but we just get crickets from those same haters.
I liked learning along with all the young characters. So many people complain about pc's giving away puzzle solutions as soon as you get near them but MEA made you actually think. But hey, there is a reason why IQs are lowering here in the US. Does anyone actually think taking a bunch of old farts that can't have kids is the way to go if you want to create a new population? Young people make sense. There were so many things to explore and the things you could run across. It was amazing how many things you could discover and there were times I was really hoping they would of expanded on some of those things. The blood filled room pointing at Reyes being a part of it was definitely something that would of been great to discuss especially if you had romanced him. You could actually have real conversations with random npcs and there were some that you could come back to and your conversation actually progressed. The way they implement multi-player was wonderful, letting you send in teams to get the benefits if you could not actually play the multiplayer and you could access from your phone.
I will admit, I really disliked Liam. The writer used idioms or colloquialisms that must of been understandable to her but so much of what he said was gibberish to me. Kind of like, 'My face is tired' is a term people use when they are absolutely sick to death of smiling to make others feel better to the point where your smiling face muscles hurt. Or when you are in a competition, job, etc. where you have to constantly smile. Liam was also a security specialist that gave away the 'keys to the kingdom' to a total stranger. He should of been court martialed or whatever the equivalent was. That was entirely unrealistic. I personally would never of trusted him again with anything. On top of that, he was pretty mean to fem Ryder at times. I will give credit to the Star Wars' easter eggs, they were funny. The scary movie line when Peebee goes off alone was funny too.
For the next, ME I am expecting Liara to have had Shepard's kid who will probably be a companion if not a forced pc in the next series just to shut people up. I think that was the gift Liara gave to Shepard at the end of ME3; the eternity bit when you say your farewells before the last mission. So if someone from BioWare is actually reading this, thank you for trying new things and please consider having a 1st person option! I've always wanted BioWare to do 1st person along with 3rd person mode because I have a disability that makes 3rd person extremely hard to play. Also, for extremely difficult dexterity quests, have the option to skip it after the nth time? Sometimes I have to find someone to say, do the lava hopping because my hands don't work correctly, same issue with 3rd person.

I think ME5 is going to be predominantly set in the Andromeda galaxy, the clues are all there Andromeda's presence in the trailer, Aging up Liara 600+ years, the mention of Arc 6 and Godspeed in the teaser, and logistically the milky way of the Trilogy looks nothing like the post ME3 Milkyway.
Andromeda hardest task was in my opinion having to start from scratch with building a galaxy, why would Bioware want to saddle ME5 with same chore, especially when that foundation has already been laid by Andromeda.

Andromeda was a solid game. The ME Trilogy overshadowed MEA, as a result of having three games for the main characters and story to grow. The MET Crew didn’t become the legends they are in ME1. It took more development. So MEA, while it had some story and technical issues, wasn’t given a fair chance. Also, I was fine with Andromeda not having Paragon/Renegade. That system was good for Shepard because having stricter boundaries in the Alliance made sense. Ryder, however, was not employed by the Alliance. Anyway, I'm excited for more Mass Effect!

I'm extremely confused by Casey Hudson's tweet with the concept art expressing a desire of stories yet to tell, 2 of which happen to feature the Normandy and therefore probably have to do with the Milky Way. Why am I confused by that? Because that's the exact same way I felt when Andromeda was first announced. The narrative going around at that time was Bioware wanting to embark on something completely new and that they needed the Andromeda Galaxy as their sandbox for it. To which I felt the Milky Way Galaxy still has a plethora of mysteries and intrigues both pre and post Reaper Invasion which made it still a perfect setting for a 4th game. So to me all of this has felt like years, money, and time wasted coming back to the same conclusion.
I can agree that the fanbase did perhaps dig in a little too harshly on Bioware for ME3's ending. However I will die on the hill that the bulk of the criticism leveled at Andromeda was valid and deserved. It's a shame that an entire studio was axed over it, and that the series was in an anxious state of limbo for a few years as a result. But that makes me somewhat optimistic that their focus this time will be on getting things right. (As it should be.)
Either way, I'm not pre-ordering ME5 when it comes out. I will scour opinions from reviewers I trust before taking the leap of faith again.

I do think a Andromeda 2 would've been better than Andromeda 1. Most people tend to like a games 2nd version over it's 1st. Much more imperfections in the 1st attempt. I think he said it well, ME2 they fixed issues from ME1 and ME3 the further refined the game. If they had everything the same and Andromeda had the same issues like it does, I believe it would be much worst due to more or less a template or familiarity with all it's working parts. Since things were new and unfortunately falling short, mixed with high expectations, is why I believe people hate it like they do. A sequel to the series has potential to fix the mistakes. Either way I hope that the new Mass Effect gets on par with the original trilogy. I would enjoy to see the story unfold more.

After over 3830 hours of playing this game, I finally realized why I enjoy it more than all the other Mass Effect games.
It’s because of the multitude of diverse quests, projects, and personal interactions that one is presented with. None of these must be completed in any specific sequence to achieve an outcome. And many can be skipped altogether, which will not adversely affect the game overall. As a result, I find the game very relaxing and non-stressful to play.
My game is heavily modified with 30+ Nexus mods, which overcomes many complaints from those playing an unmodified version.

As a longtime ME player and fan, with over 3830 hours of MEA single-player play. And still with only 99% completion of the game. I am left with many storyline questions.
Questions that BioWare should be willing to follow up on at some point.
    Such as
1: Why didn’t every Pathfinder get a scout ship? (Update, I found the answer to this in one of the books). I.e., Mass Effect Andromeda: Nexus Uprising Book 1 Mass Effect: Initiation Book 2 Mass Effect Andromeda: Annihilation Book 3
2: Who is this Benefactor, and where are they now? (Update, I have no definitive proof, but I know who this is and why they are not showing up in Andromeda.)
3: Who killed or ordered Jien Garson killed and why? (Update, I know who did this from the book).
4: Why didn’t the Krogan people get their own Pathfinder?
5: Why is the Tempest not at least armed with defensive weapons?
6: Does the Quarian Ark Keelah Si'yah ever overcome the pathogen onboard and regain control of their ark? UPDATE, I now know the answer to this one after finishing the book. But I will let the most dedicated fans find that answer as I did. (Spoiler alert), Cora Harper could never have become the Pathfinder when Alec Ryder died because to do so required that his replacement be one of his children for reasons that will be revealed when all the memory blocks are removed. That is why Sarah or Scott were the only options for this transfer.
That is NOT the case with the other pathfinders.
And finally, who ultimately becomes the leading member of the Initiative ruling body, replacing the current incompetent group? As well as other less essential story tracks left hanging with no way to pursue them. I love this and all the other ME games, but this one has always held my attention. And I am currently on my umpteenth playthrough. I am dedicated to reaching 100% completion of the game.
PS for the channel owner and others that find several things about this game that they do not like. Try modding the game with Nexus Mods. I am running 30 mods with mine, and none are cheating. IMHO, modding is both fun and allows one to make the game more personal.

Who do you think the benefactor is and who do you think killed Jien Garson? I've read the books so I'm curious to see what conclusions you came up with! And yeah there are a ton of questions left unresolved in Andromeda and I hope they are somehow answered one day.

@@kalaelizabeth Thank you for asking; I think (but have no proof) that the Benefactor is the Illusive man and that he arranged for Jean Garson's demise. The reason for that decision I am still figuring out. But she was killed BEFORE the current group of so-called administrators was out of cryo. So there would have been a standing order to remove her as soon as the Nexus arrived in Andromeda if, in fact, he was the cause of it. That's just pure speculation on my part. And it only makes sense if I am correct about the Benefactor's identity.

Or perhaps even his presence in the final scene on the Citadel was cloned and fully under his control. In the world of Sci-Fi games clearly anything is possible. i liked andromeda, and there were aspects that could've been improved (and im not refering to glitches or bugs, i play assassins creed for fun, im used to those things happening all the time), but narrativewise. i liked ryder too but i still think the fandom was too attached to shepard (and the trailers didnt help being all n7 armor).
i still think if any studio is making some rpg, it should take the witcher 3 approach, were decisions and side quest affect the game as a whole. and not just found/collect item for the sake of it.

Interesting interview. Good to see Walters acknowledge that Andromeda was not what fans wanted. Innovating for the sake of innovating is never a good thing. BioWare was simply chasing fads (open world, live service). I would never compare Andromeda to ME1. I can replay ME1 endlessly and have a blast, but I can't sit through a single playthrough of Andromeda. Too many problems with that game (weak protagonist, weak villain, Marvel-insipired writing, bland open-world, etc). I really hope the next ME has nothing to do with Andromeda.

One of the biggest gripes I have about andromeda is the complete lack of further story DLC and the fact that they stopped support after 1.12 where they just updated it for 4K I think. It did have a lot of potential and they should have stuck with unreal engine rather than make the decision to go with frostbite. I've got no problem's with the story as it's still a fun game but I think it could have been fleshed out more than it has. Assuming mass effect 5 does really well and I sincerely hope it does, could they revisit andromeda and possibly do a remake? Not sure if they would do that and I have my doubts, but if ME5 is a definite success then many people will in turn could try and push for an andromeda sequel.

I think the thing that infuriates me about this interview is how Mac Walters answers felt off. Like he wasn't as honest as he could be. Especially with how he describes the relationship between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect teams. From other Bioware devs, David Gaider and Mark Darrah, the Mass Effect kinda looked down on them and to the point where they didn't use any tools developed for Dragon Age Inquisition. Just threw it out instead of using it and making their life easier with MEA and Anthem.

When ME1 was released it was done with love and gave us so many good stuff with a few black spots due to lack of the technology (I guess) but ME Andromeda is the opposite: A pompous release based on a loved product that lacks exactly what we loved in the ME universe: A great squad team that supports Shepard no matter what and an amazing story that, even tho continueed on other games, it gives a feel of conclusion. Dont get me wrong. I like Andromeda but I understand why some people dont.

I hope the next Mass Effect, whatever it may be called, can properly come to a conclusion for Andromeda within the next iteration of Mass Effect 5. All I want to know is what happened to the Quarian ark? Who was the elusive benefactor for the Andromeda Initiative? What happened to the other races, organic or synthetic, and many who are unknown to us (cause the universe is extremely big instead of just focusing on galaxies) outside the blast radius of the Mass Effect relays?

What about the other races that Sovereign and the rest of the Reapers didn't bother to utilize them for their mass due to the lack of evolutionary technology? Remember, they only go for those who crossed their technological preference, and the rest is left alone until they become more technologically advanced for the next cycle... If you missed that little tid bit, then I suggest you play Mass Effect the series all over again and pay close attention to the informational codecs.

It can feel like trying to read a book of connected short stories where the pages have all been ripped out and randomly reassembled unless you're careful. However, there is a decent game and story in there; not on par with the OG trilogy, but still better than a lot of other games out there.
Some simple advice. 1) when doing 'a world', do as much of the main content there as it let's you before moving on. 2) Pick an objective on the map and stick to it, even if it means going back and forth - doing stuff because it's nearby breaks up the storytelling in a distracting way.
      SPOLERY ADVICE
      SPOILERY ADVICE
Once given the choice, go to *Havarl* , and do everything you can. When a significant npc thanks you for the help and says come back some time to investigate further mysteries, leave then, and don't return until required by both Peebee's and Jaal's questline, then complete it.
Then, go to *Voeld* after doing Havarl pt1and complete as much of that as possible.
You'll be sent to *Kadara* for main plot important stuff. Don't do much more than necessary and let reasons to visit build up. Tho when you do return, visit Reyes frequently. This planet is best completed nearer the end.
Go through as much content on *Elaaden* in one chunk as well.
Do *Eos* part 2 in a solid chunk also.
There is another world. Do not visit until you get a request from Vectra, then do the whole thing.
Avoid going to talk with Captain Dunn of Ark Hyperion when she requests it at all costs until close to the end.
Going through the game like this makes the worlds feel more like chapters in the way they did in ME1.There'll still be random bits sending you to and fro, but it eliminates the worst of it. By no means ideal, but it's a far more satisfying experience doing it this way than getting frazzled chasing disparate plot points, and it avoids some annoying back tracking.

Andromeda was also too open in case of leveling your ryder and choosing equipment. Past prologue and already you can invest point in any of (too) many skills that are (too) complex in balancing. And then almost all weapons are avaible to craft, just the matter of gathering enough resources. Such straitforward openess makes game a little boring it doesnt challenge you enough in creating diffrent builds even thou it has more potential in that deparment than any previous ME game. I wish we would get Profile system and ustricted skill choosing for Mass Effect "5" butit has to be made it right.

The worrying thing about these conversations were happening when the new game was being discussed. Was why they didn't future proof Legendary by upgrading it to a newer version of Unreal considering the new game will be in Unreal 5. To leave Legendary in Unreal 3.1 based on this just proves how poor Bioware has treated the fans. And if Andromeda is released again it must be redone in Unreal hopefully before the new game with all the bugs fixed.

Moving the game to a new engine would require far too much work and would essentially be a remake instead of a remaster, there just doesn't justify a reason to do it.
