Ted Baird awesome vid ted!
Thanks a lot Jim
You and your wife are awesome!! I’m always ready for a new video. Please keep the camping trips coming.
@@edwardbrook2029 Thanks A lot Edward! Appreciate the Encouragement...will do. New vid up Tomorrow morn. Full build bark roof overnight of this project
Ted Baird Awesome. I will certainly be checking it out. And please call me Ed. Lol.
And now.... heading to the kitchen for eggs and bacon! Awesome vid
Lol Nice I was surprised how well those eggs came out.
Awesomeness Ted!!! Way to persist with the primitive fire up!
A excellent Fire it up Friday indeed! That tinder fungus is good stuff.
With our lack of birch species in this area, it is real hard to find birch
fungus and chaga over here. Great trip and killer vid Brother! Cheers!
Glad you liked the Fire it Up portion Lol What a pain in the butt. Its fun to practice though. Wiki says Chaga grows on poplar Oak Beech and Alder but it can look different. Ive only ever seen it on Birch however but perhaps I overlooked it. Something to learn there for sure. Thanks for tuning in bro. Have a great weekend
So good to see the whole process of starting a fire from scratch. I tried it and thought I was doing it wrong because it was taking so long and was such an involved process. Watching you persevering (without cussing was a wonderment to behold. Good content, sir. Really enjoyed the quiet approach.
Thanks Kate I appreciate the feedback. Its definitely an arduous process no corners can be cut or it ends up taking longer or not working at all and having to start all over. It's definitely all about persistence and learning from trying. Once you have done it once it becomes easier in many ways. Its frustrating at times especially when ure hungry or cold etc lol. Thanks for watching I'll have the full shelter build bark roof etc up later this week. Take care
Awesome vid! Man, that looks yummy
Thanks Jim. Ya it turned out great. No gritt on the eggs at all
Friggin BOSS getting that fire going Ted! great meal, great vid 💪🏼
Careena! Thanks! That's fire took a while lol but often it goes much faster. Meal was sweet 4 sure...I still had a fancy rock.. Working up to cookin the steak right on the coals like u did 😉🥩👊
beautiful country- great meal!
Thanks Brooke! Those early snowfalls are beauty
Good job with the fire!!
Thanks Jim
Dandy little getaway. Can't beat it
Thanks bud! Its Fun playing fort in the woods 😁🥩🥓🔥🍳 Thanks 4 stoppin in
Great video Ted. You looked like a knife-wielding chef from Benihana. Beautiful area.
Haha! Thanks Doug. And yes beautiful area 4 sure. That 1st snowfall was super pretty
Very amazing....
Good luck 👍
Hey Thank you! Appreciate you watching. Glad you enjoyed it. See you next time. Take care
I'd recommend using a lighter!
Lol I hear ya.
HEY HEY THERE IS TED MAKING A SHELTER HAVING TEA I AM QUILTING DARN NEEDLES ARE GETTING SMALLER TO SEE TO THREAD OH I AM GETTING OLD hahahaha
Lol Hey Linda. Well I have no idea how to quilt so you have me beat on that one ! That's a great skill

Brushcraft beard looking good Ted. I guess Heather's taking care of Bella she's got a great personality. Tell them hello, Thanks Ted. ... Arkansas Clyde
Hey Thanks! I just told Heather and Bella right now. Heather was sick unfortunately and Bella wanted with her as its deer rifle season and she looks like a little veal fawn lol. That why I wore my orange a bunch. I missed them on this project 4 sure. Take care
Great job.
I think that I will try to do this. (This WINTER.) At least build a fire and do the cook out part.
Thanks for a few ideas.
I love winter .I am a cross country, downhill, snowshoe guy. I fish trout too. (73 years "young")
I down hill ski with two guys, one 94 and one 90.
Live is GOOD. ⛷⛷❄❄😉😉
You are a very interesting man.
I am not trying to brag , just sharing my life style with you. THANKS.
TomG.
Hey Tom. Thanks for sharing its always great to hear about others passions. I hope to be going as strong as you and your friends well into the future. I think you'll enjoy this for sure but one suggestion I'd have is to have a plan to keep busy whether its cooking building making fire etc as it sounds like ure a person who's used to being on the go. As a canoe tripper that moves camp each day I find that these projects are awesome until there is nothing left to do lol. I can sit and chill only for so long. Of course just making camp and firewood in winter is a task. Its awesome definitely recommend it. Appreciate your thoughts. Take care
Hi guy. The Chaga, whose botanical name is Inonotus obliquus, is a fungus which in the wild grows on the bark of birch. It is typical of high latitudes like those of North America, Siberia, Northern Europe and Asia. In nature, it appears with an irregular appearance and shape, dark in color, almost burnt. Sometimes it also compares on the trunk of beeches, alders, oaks and poplars. This medicinal mushroom became popular in Western Europe with the publication of the autobiographical book written in the late 1960s by the Nobel laureate, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. In his paper titled "Pavilion Cancer", Solzhenitsyn narrates his recovery from cancer thanks to the Chaga decoction. Bye from Kanaltaler NE Italy
That's awesome information Thanks a lot for sharing that. What an amazing thing Chaga is. I think we will continue to learn of its benefits. I'm fortunate to have access to large amounts of it. It's also important to note that as long as it is not dug out of the tree trunk it will regenerate and regrow and will be available for harvest again. This is the second time I removed chaga fron this exact same spot.
I didn't know if I should laugh or cry with the fire making. I was yelling..."get a different rock". But you did good!! Breakfast looked yummy with the light snow falling. Love how you climbed the tree to get the chaga. A fun video. Thanks . 🍁💖😺🎃🍂🦃🌾
Lol I hear you Janet it was tedious getting a fire goin like that it's hard not to give up and get a flame thrower Haha. Breakfast turned out great and was it ever beautiful out. The 1st snow of the year. That's a great honey hole for chaga but that was the low hanging fruit lol the rest is higher. Thx 4 ure thoughts. Ill do a full vid of the build and bark roof in the future also. Have a great weekend
Oh wow Ted I learned about the Chaga from Shawn James, he says that it’s very nutritious for you! Thanks 👍👍👍
Hey Mary. Yes the Chaga is very healthy a cancer fighter among other things. And an excellent tinder can take a spark from just Rocks but I use it mostly for nutritional purposes. Thanks for watching 😁
Chaga is amazing. Been using it here in northwestern Ontario for years now and love it.
@@TheRealTedBaird I whish it was, but till now its not a proven cancer fighter...
@@JoeOsChannel Totally
@@vliegendehollander55 Right but there seems to be a large amount of evidence to say it helps shrink tumors and slow the growth on of some cancers its its currently being researched but is not "proven" in humans but has been in mice. It also has many other health benefits....sometimes we dont necessarily need FDA proof to use something that has been used for centuries. By no means is it a cure or alternative however to other treatments.
Nice video Ted! Miss the wife....
Thanks Totally I did too Heather was sick unfortunately and Bella stayed back because its Rifle season and she looks like a small veal deer Haha made more work for me with no help lol. Thx 4 watching. I'll have the full build out later with a bark roof etc
🎙💨Ted the journey was a schooling experience, survival isn’t always a comfortable choice but it sure can be beautiful...ML&ALOHA Big Ted my friend. 🌲🇨🇦🍻🇺🇸🌲
Ya man you said it. It's a labor of love tough goin but rewarding and beautiful. Thanks as always my man ✌🍁🌲🍻
Kudos to you for showing the trials and tribulations in starting a primitive fire.
Thanks a lot Bob appreciate it. Sometimes it goes much quicker and of course sometimes much longer lol. Thx 4 tuning in. I'll hv the full natural bark roof shelter build etc up tomorrow morn if ure interested. Take care
Hey the video shows you walking away from a fire still burning...have to ask that burning question? Lol....I have never seen anyone cook eggs on a rock? Got a bit hungry watching ...cheers
Nice I've never seen it either I figured what the heck I'll give it a try and they turned out great. No grit whatsoever. I did toss some snow on the fire when I came back for the camera but this time of year it's not really a concern either way a month of rain then snow you could ring a gallon of water out of just about everything lol. Thx 4 tuning in ✌
I got cold just watching you light the fire lol. Well done 😄
Lol Thanks I hear ya. Pretty tedious. I had a small hope there would have been colas but just a wet pile of soot lol. Glad I got it goin. Thx for checking it out
Sorry....forgot to mention...alwyas, always mention BACON in your title.......when you are cooking it however!
Haha! Not a bad idea that Just made me want bacon.
Talk to us. Tell us what you are doing and why. Yes, some of us get it, but not all. And its boring. Either learn to talk to a camera, or get a dog. Like all of the *successful* chanells.
Lol Hey Mike I have a dog appreciate ure input on it. Sometimes I Talk sometimes not. Did a bunch of trips with the wife and our dog some with my brother on this channel pretty good trips lots of talking. Was in the zone on this 1 see how it goes I see the appeal to both styles of vids some ppl just like to listen to the forest relax etc and if u film well enough u dont need to explain or speak English to understand. However I appreciate ure input I enjoy talking and explaining also. Guess I'll just do it all lol. Mix it up. Thx 4 stoppin in I'll hv the full build bark roof etc up tmr morn ✌😎
Nice firemaking skills, your persistence paid off👊Wade
Thanks Wade. Patients is definitely a necessity with this type if thing lol. Cool way to light a fire 4 sure
Why is my blade so dull. Oh wait! I just beat a rock forever with it. That's patience my friend. Slainte
Haha I call it old man patients the kind you need to troll for fishing hours or sit in a deer stand lol this is tedious but not 2 bad compared to other things. I used the back of the knife and edge but I did beat it up some lol. Thx 4 tuning in Slainte my friend
Nice fire start man. I'm liking that roof, should keep you nice and dry. on a side note, you shouldn't use chaga if you have kidney disease or have had kidney stones before or taking any medications like insulin as it can interact and cause side effects. Thanks for bringing us along. Cheers
Hey man Thanks for tuning in. I appreciate the chaga advice luckily all clear there. The Roof is pretty sweet 2 huge sheets of bark aprox (max) 9 feet x 4.5 feet should be a great roof. Gonna post a full vid on it later. Cheers 👍🍻
Them eggs didn’t stand a chance! Enjoyed watching Ted, thanks for sharing!
Tha ks Scott. Ya the eggs turned out great. I was surprised to be honest. Thx 4 tuning in ✌
Does it matter what type of rock or type of knife? Also was that tree sap you put on the tinder bark to make it burn slower?
The rock was quartz it is a bit harder but other rocks will also work kind of steel matters some but any will work but some it is more challenging then others. The sap was Balsam Fur sap it is highly flammable and burns hotter and likely longer also. But a very important part was Chaga fungus which i used to catch the spark. It works also like chat cloth butbis natural...........the idea with the knife and rock is u get the rock to shave a small peice of steel off the knife creating a spark that lands on the chaga tinder
awesome video, nice that you showed what you were collecting for tinder, for those who are not sure. love your shelter
Thanks Sue! I appreciate it. I think it's very important to show it rather then just have it and talk about it it's a better wat to learn I find...for me anyway...My most recent video has the full build of the shelter bark roof etc if you interested. Thanks for your thoughts. Take care
Awesome video Ted. Love when show the cooking, that’s a big part of the whole experience for me. Must be hard to get out of the warm sleeping bag though lol
That's great to hear. Glad you enjoyed it cooking and all. And ya sometimes it's very hard to get out of the bag lol. Often in the colder months I get out just because it's no longer warm lol

Hey Jason. Thanks. Ya it was a tedious process lol. Sometimes it goes right away sometimes it takes longer. Dude, grab the wife and Bella and come to FL! I'll show you bushcraft options that you don't have up north!!
Lol thanks man ya there r some awesome options in different regions it's part of what's so cool about it. That would be sweet
What kind of rock do you use to start your fire with and what kind of rock did you find to cook on?
The rock is used to start the fire quartz its harder so that's why I used it but other rocks would work the idea is the rock shaves a but if the steel if the knife off causing a spark and that lands on the tinder. I'm not completely sure what kind I used to cook on. Its probably granite
@@JohnDavis-im1oy hey John yes that's for clarity for the person above I just updated my replay as I didn't catch their question about what rock I used for fire starting i just read the cooking rock question which I guess was prob granite. I used quartz for the knife and rock because it's harder and better then other rocks but indeed many other Rocks would have worked as this is basically a more challenging method of flint and steel technique as in shaving a bit of the steel off to light the tinder. Thanks a lot. I plan to do it with just 2 rocks no steel in the future at some point. Take care
@@JohnDavis-im1oy Yes i agree in some areas there is iron oar that's 98% pure that would be excellent however other rocks like pyrite or other high metallic content would likely work. Just hitting rocks together produces a spark but to get one to fall hot enough would be a challenge hence the metallic content needed.
Muy malo para encender una fogata
Hola, gracias por tus pensamientos, sí, fue un método difícil de encender un fuego, pero funcionó, así que es una buena práctica. gracias por ver hasta la próxima
its interesting to see the realness of what bushmen of long ago had to do,just to survive each day with something that seems so simple nowadays like a fire, fire being one of the most important things the diffaculty of it and yet they lived it and it was a normal everyday routine and to think how many people out there today would be able to survive living from the land or just being able to exsist, its hard to fathom the way some people live the lives the way they do nowadays.
Couldn't agree more my man. Its amazing where we are now our lives have become "easier" but more satisfying? Not sure guess that depends on the individual. Ots also amazing what we are capable of that we have lost touch with also. The feats of those that came before us seem almost superhuman nowadays from physical abilities to survival etc. Its definitely Fun to practice the old ways. This was all so much work now if I also had to source food that's tough. Thx for tuning in. I'll have the full build bark roof etc up this week. Take care
Wow now that fire took so time but I bet you enjoyed it a lot more then a lighter lol food looked great as well thanks again for the share Ted !!!!!!!!!!!

@@JoeOsChannel Awesome great to hear. Thanks
Is that tree sap you put on your shavings? I didn't know about that if it's tree sap.
Hey Grace Good question its Balsam fur tree sap it's highly flammable and excellent fire starter the pine saps like spruce for example are also very flammable. This balsam is great because the sap bubbles are so easy to access. It's also high in vitamin C and has other medical properties. Many great uses. Thanks for your questions. Appreciate you watching. Take care
Still looking for my chaga out here in BC. Too old to climb trees for it though.
Lol Ya its probably hard to come by in BC but apparently it can grow on Alder Poplar Beech and Oak as well as Birch but may look different and is less common. Not that there is a lot of those species in BC either lol. But it would be interesting to know how to identify it on other species of trees if it looks different. I've only even seen it on birch.
Very good, Ted, Nice shelter you made as well !! Chaga Tea was an added touch.
