Bushcraft Winter Overnight - Swedish Nying - Canvas Lavvu Shelter - Chicken Rotisserie

- First day was unreal spring weather for this time of year. Second day harsh winter. Enjoy.
I only had time to let 1/2 or maybe 2/3 of the material burn...and that was roughly 18 hours. But conditions for a slow burn was perfect and it was hardwood, no wind and heavy snowfall in the night. When it burned for a couple of hours and you dont touch it, like blowing or something there is not so much flames anymore, more of glows in the dark. And in the night and early hours there is usually no wind and moist air so it lasts long. And then the space gets bigger between the logs as it rests on fading embers that transform into coals in the centre thus burning slow. Then if you give the top log a kick it will fall down a bit, pressing down the embers, thus making the space between the two surfaces smaller again, and more heat will develop and flames start to rise and it burns more intense again. Pretty awesome way to control the burn. The coolest thing is when its burning slow with just glowing embers, it still gives away an enormous amount of heat towards your body if you lie down along side of it. Traditionally Spruce or pine is used for this but I had an maple log transported to the site beforehand... softwood I had done before and I have been thinking for years how a thick hardwood material would work for this. That is to take into consideration with the long burn time here. If using a dead pine for this the ideal is not having it too dry because it burns to fast. A bit moist is perfect but its also good to know that the only downside with the Nying is it gives out a lot of smoke. So wind direction is very important for comfort.

Brilliant idea for fire! That will burn even in the rain... amazing! And it burned all night long! I love it! It's the best Fire on RUclips!
Thanks!
Work smarter not harder :)

What a wonderful video. I've never built a fire like that, and never used an evergreen wind vane as a rotisserie to boil chicken before either. Thank you for these ideas. And I really like how you put the ground back the way it was too. Very respectful.
You are most welcome Sir. Thank you!
Absolutely loved this video. I can't tell you how much your videos relax and impress me. Thank you so much as always, and look forward to seeing more. I don't get a lot of chance to watch you tube but when I do these are the sort of things I enjoy. Full respect to you and your knowledge
Thanks Owen and thanks for your support!
Hey Swedwoods, watching your videos reminds me of someone special to me we used to hike, camp and explore the vast wilderness together but ever since he passed away i stopped doing all of those things. But the moment i started watching your videos it reminded me of those sweet memories that i cherish.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
keep it up 😁
Nice memories I imagine! Thank you!
That is the coolest "thinking out of the box" type of fire i have ever seen! (and one of the most delicious looking meals -really half the fun of watching bushcraft vids is getting a raging appetite from all the food!)
This fire method is really in the category of "it is so logical and obvious.... as soon as someone else thinks of it and shows you." Thanks for thinking of it and showing us!
Thank you! The Nying fire is a traditional fire here in Sweden. The best long fire in my opinion.
@@Swedwoods Is there any wood that you prefer over others, especially when considering you'll be cooking meat directly on it?
Perfect timing! Just hopped on RUclips. My, "new to me" Polish Lavvu has been a great companion for me this winter. I followed your DIY on making a heat shield and ammo can stove as well. The entire system works well. Especially here, in the -0 degree Fahrenheit winters of Vermont. Thanks so much for the inspiration! Love your content. Top shelf sir.
Thanks a lot!
You still amaze me with your vids, I truly thank you for your work, I see a lot of copies of your style, some pretty good, but here is for me the original, the source of inspiration of these silent bushcraft videos, constant, genuine work.. Brilliant!
Thanks brother. I remember in the beginning the comments, why dont you talk? Are you a mute? stop wasting my time and explain what you do etc. I never understod why one have to explain carving a stick...I mean its not rocket science.
You are talking louder with your silent videos than most of people on youtube.. take care@@Swedwoods
Best camp-fire I've seen so far. Gives you heat through the night.
Thanks!
Made me think of the truck over the Misty Mountains .... great photography and video! Thank-you for sharing!
Thanks!
First that bow saw then the split log....genius ! Wonderful film ! Thanks for shaming that !
Thanks a lot Albert!
Det är fantastisk, det enda man kan göra är njuta å vänta nästa surprisen,du är el capo de tutti capo, respekt,,,,
Thank you Marta!
When i saw this video, it's like i'm watching myself!
I use to do the same when i need some peace in mind.
The forest, but mostly the spruce forests are the best remedy for all kind of affections.
Spending the night out there, beside a good warm fire, it's the BEST shrink or doctor ever.In my opinion.
Big like bro!🍻
👍👍 Thank you!
Great videography skills. Enjoyable video to watch. I do not recall seeing a saw configuration like that one before. I like it.
Thanks Lonnie. Yes I like that saw, I mostly make a vid from an idea and move forward to the next, but this saw is the only thing I reused here on the channel. You can see me making it a couple of videos down.. I call it the X-frame bucksaw
Thank you! For taking us with you!!! Blessings to you and your family 😇 🇺🇸
Thanks!
Wonderful video! Thanks
Thank you!
Only an experienced on woodcraft sawing with that rhythm. Thanks for sharing good video
Thanks a lot!
That was a really cool type of fire you made, not to mention that saw. I’ve never seen it done that way. I can imagine it would be very warm like you said lying next to it. No firewall needed. Thanks for sharing the video.
Thanks!
Yes , that was awesome 👍
Always good to see you forking around in the woods😉
Loved it
Thanks a lot brother!!
One of the best all time bushcraft vids . The chicken setup was really cool but super top notch production as well as skill all the way around .
Thanks Geoffrey!!

Thanks brother!!
День добрый. В ваших руках все просто,вкусная курица и хорошая нодья. До скорого.
Thanks!
i'd call it a masterpiece.
the chicken-rotator is an outstanding inspiration.will sure use it every then and there.
Thanks a lot!!
@@Swedwoods I'm going to sweden in may and will have 2-3 weeks for a nice trip off-grid. is the area between karlstad and mora ok for this, or do i have to head more up north? havent been in sverige for roughly ten years now :/
wow rotisserie style and again the areal shot fell soooo spiritual slowly moving thru the forest very cool bros .
Thank you my friend!
BEAUTIFUL video, nice drone work!!! SWEEEEET!
Thanks!
I appreciate watching your videos because you're more work and no talk
Thanks!
i just knew it......you would put the turf back ......i knew it........loved the log fire.....given me loads of ideas......thanks for up loading
Thanks glad you liked it!
Good job. Beautiful video. Greetings from the Czech republic.
Thank you very much!
You have done it again, brought peace and enjoyment. Chicken looked good. Stay safe my brother .Skaal.
Thanks I was wondering what kept ya? 😂
@@Swedwoods It's an age thing.....old, slow and poor....:-)
Am too old (90) to go camping anymore . Miss it ! Great to be taken along . Thanks ! Wow ! No cutting board !
You are most welcome Sir, thanks!
👍👍 beautifully brilliant and peaceful, love the drone View's👍👍
Thank you!
Thank you for responding, really enjoy the tranquility of your vids. Great work.
Loved the whole video! I have never seen a saw like yours. Loved it for it's design, as I use a Silky folding saw, just because I travel by ATV where I live here on South Vancouver Island, Canada. Not much solo overnighting here because of the rather aggressive wildlife we have. The Split Log Fire was great. Another first for me, and the Rotisserie Chicken was a hit. The Idea of the Dry Maple log was great. We have mostly Fir and Alder here. Very little Maple and no Burch at all. Thank You for Showing us your ways. Randy
Thanks for watching Randy!
Outstanding video sir! I am so envious that is an absolutely beautiful forest you have there!
Thanks!
Such great skills and meditative atmosphere, feel like I've been on holiday retreat. Thank you my friend for such excellent work and sharing. Harry
Thanks a lot Harry!
A perfect Swedish bushcamp... a warm log fire, abundant tasty food, and a hardy inviting shelter!!!
Thanks!
A breeze-driven rotisserie . . . ingenious; as was grilling the steaks from both sides at the same time, which I'm thinking HAS to make them tastier! I am definitely going to try that. And the video was nicely done, as usual, sir.
Yes the breeze makes it rotate faster sometimes. But even when no wind its rotating as conductive heat currents from the fire makes it spin. Thanks!
Another great video! that version of the long log fire was awesome and as usual good food and plenty of it! just the way I like it. you are a master crafter and a true bushman. Can't wait for the next one.
Thanks brother!
Καλή μέρα κ. Swedwoods. Καλή επιτυχία στο καινούργιο σας video. Σας παρακολουθώ ανελλειπώς.
Thank you very much!
Excellent. Love the music at the end. Well done and thank you for making this.
Thank you!
What a beautiful piece of log you found for the fire! And how that weather changed, wow
And the ending blew me away!!
Thanks David!!
SUPER VIDEO!
Thank you my friend!
I liked that innovation on the long fire, very stable!👍🔥
really ancient innovation here in Sweden lol
Thank you Sir!
BIGFOOT 15:20 at your 2 o'clock!!!
Good to have you back sir.
😂😂.... and I will have to check as usual...just to make sure...LOL
Love the sound of the sea saw ,and cutting the wood natural back ground ,thanks for sharing
Thanks!!
this video goes great with the COVID19 crisis... I can't go outside but at least I can watch a video of someone doing it. :)
thanks for watching!
Sorry.....I cant put it ant other way. Friggin Awesome! That "Chicken-copter" and the use of that log was fantastic. Well done....Thanks for taking us along.
thanks a lot!!
Beautiful video ..really enjoyed it..just subscribed with bell...I struggle to find such serenity here in North East England...how lucky you are in Sweden ..such beautiful woodland/forest ...Thanks for sharing !👍🍻
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thumbs up bro. Very peaceful camping and tasty food too.
Thanks!
Here's a man who knows his camera work. Cinematography even. Great vid.
Thanks!
Amazing vídeo man! What a masterpiece and thanks for sharing this camp with us. 👍
Thank you very much!
Nice going , that is a proper logfire , I love the way you prepared the chicken , bushcraft on the highest level . Thanks !
Thank you very much!
Ännu en härlig video. Maximal skogskänsla och bättre än så här blir det inte. Vilken härlig stockeld du gjorde också. Allt Gott !!
Tackar min skogsvän!
Great job bud you are becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs keep up the great work and you be blessed
Thank you very much Sir!
I really liked your video. The way to make the saw, and the long fire was excellen! Surely you will not die of hunger.
Thank you!
Great work! The bucksaw design looks pretty sweet.
Thanks!
@@Swedwoods Is there a diagram or short how to video on that saw?
Scroll down a few videos. There is a video on how I did it in the woods. X- frame buck saw in the title

Great movie, my dear fellow countryman! Like the fact that you bring some good food out in the woods!
Thanks brother!
Awesome, as usual. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks!
Excellent woodcraft. I like the idea of using hardwood and I bet the heat was great! Nice job of rematting the forest floor!
Thanks Marty!
Dude, seriously love the way you did this video. Perfect silence, just ambiance. I felt like I was there.
Thanks!!
Not sure if I can say anything more than what's already been said in previous comments BUT, I must say it as well, Awesome dude, really really awesome ! ! !
Your truly talented in the greater outdoors lifestyle. Splitting a rather large log or small timber was very well done in the method you used.
The type of fire you built and the way you utilized that fire are nothing short of genius. The chicken rotating via the heat upon the branch once again, pure genius.
Man it looked really delicious too. Nothing like the fat dripping off and the juices, MMMMM. Yes, I had to go grab something to eat after seeing that.
And lets not forget your incredible clean up of your camp site. I can't tell you how much I appreciate they way you just rolled the ground cover back over it's original area leaving not hardly a trace of your presence. I often wonder what the area looks like after someone has built they're bushcraft shelter and fire reflection wall and bunkbed to sleep upon and so on and so on.
The area must look like a war zone after building such monstrosities and leaving them for months and months just to use them two three times or possibly used more.
I just appreciate your use of the great outdoors more than the other way. You really have a great way of using what is available yet not wiping it out like a corporation would do.
Thank you Peter! Yes there are several reasons why I haven't done the mandatory "super duper shelter permanent basecamp" thing all the other channels are doing.. 1. as you say I like to leave no trace. I want the pristine forests we have here to stay pristine. Of course it is impossible to be totally invisible. You leave trace just walking on the wet moss,, but I take great satisfaction in passing an old campsite of mine, discovering that nature has taken everything back, erasing all signs I once was there. 2. I think its pretty boring being in the same spot when in fact, there are endless locations to discover here. I like to travel simple without to much gear hauling building materials etc. 3. The only permanent shelter I would like if I had to return to it several times would be a log cabin with a good view lol.
@@Swedwoods Way Cool, yea that thing about passing an old campsite of yours and it's already back to nature, very cool.
Mobility is a wonderful thing too, as they say K.I.S.S. keep it simple Stu, that always works.
You may have to do without some creature comfort item but the return you get from the beauty of things as a whole are much more rewarding.
KEEP CAMPING MAN, as your other comments say - we love to see you out there since we can't always get out there ourselves.
At least we can get a feel for it from you, thanks again.
Wow! What a great video, & great filming & edit👍🏼🍺🌲 cheers bro
Thanks!
Meat is good, but I would need to add some bread for a simple evening and morning camp. Thanks for teaching how to cook with a Nying log fire. I also liked the way the evergreen boughs made a convection fan to help turn the spit.
Yeah I had some rice actually but just didn't feel like it. I guess I was still full eating one whole chicken pretty late in the evening the night before. Yes I made one other video with a lot more advanced contraption with wings and all...but this little spruce boughs thermal rotator was just as good! If one would go even higher on the hanger it would be 100%.
@@Swedwoods I used to cook chicken 'on a string' in front of my wood burning fireplace...sometimes for pleasure...but also when winter weather deprived us of electricity. For one person a whole chicken is plenty of food...but 'satisfaction' demands more than meat, I find.
But you dont see me between takes James, feasting on cashew nuts, family size grill chips bags etc! 😂
Magnificent drone views , i love it
Thanks!
great idea letting the chicken spin slowly on a long cord for an hour.......... also nice drone camera work at the end.....
Thank you!
The outdoor skills and camera work were flawless. Very much enjoyed. ATB Mike
Thank you brother!
Very nice video. Long fire technique and the bow saw option were knew to me. Thanks. New subscriber. Looking forward to more videos
Thanks a lot!
Excellent brother excellent!
Thanks!
Such a peaceful place, great sceenery , and food looks tasty . I like the way you filmed it. Keep up the good work. Thumb up!!
Thank you!
Very nice video.. Thanx for shareing with us
My exact words I said out loud when I realized..."he's straight up making a rotisserie chicken! That's badass!"
Thank you!
What a great video.Enjoyed it so much !!!!
Thanks brother!
Love the long fire and how you started it with fire on top of the bottom piece and not a lot of little bits and bobs
Thanks! Yes that is easy with a log thats bone dry...but logs in the woods are moist, and should be so they dont burn to fast to be a long fire.
Swedwoods Incredible! Just beautiful. But, how do you keep a gap in between the two flat insides. How do you prevent them from bottoming out?
Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful wilderness there. Just incredible.
👍👍👍
I fall in love with your channel... Glad I found it... Greetings from Germany...
Thank you very much!!
Den där typen av brasa har jag nog aldrig sett förr! Intressant :)
👍👍
Great video...could of cooked half dozen chickens...loved how the bow kept the bird spinning ...honestly I thought we were making canoes but it's a great concept for cooking for large groups maybe troops in the forest way back when...maybe a viking thing...I loved every minute of it, thanks👍
Thanks a lot Phil! Lining the chickens or bit chunks of meat up alongside a log like that is a great idea for large groups. 8-10 people should be able to sit around one of them big logs!
Fresh air, Food and Freedom...👍
👍👍👍
That's right..
One of the best camera work on here. Tack själv
Thanks a lot!
Interesting fire lay . Supper looked great . Have a great evening
Outstanding tyvm. Nice fire and the carving skill. Whew
Thanks!
Oh the irony of a chicken being cooked on a feather stick...😊
As always, great experience watching your video.
Thanks a lot Stephen!
Absolutely impressive! Both in “primitive skills” and in modern technology!
Thanks Alan!
Again, another great video ! The way you deal with the fire is impressive, looks very easy when you do it. Very skillful !
Thank you!
You know I never thought of cooking chicken why I was camping unless it was on the grill but that's very creative and I think I'm going to try it next time I've seen you do it a couple times and the chicken sounded so juicy when you were cutting the leg off it it has to be awesome thanks for sharing your video
Thanks !
5:30 I just find this amazing, that wedge materializing... I have watched this video like five times now. 😉
Thanks my friend!
A great big fire and a roast bird. Awesome video my man.
Thank you!
Wicked fire. I love how you used it to cook your steak like a George Foreman lol
👍👍👍😜🏴✌️ I love 🇸🇪 stayed there for 13 years. Hejdo
Thank you! 😁
Awesome thanks for sharing 📸👍👍👍👍👍📸🙏
Thanks!
I'm from Uruguay 🇺🇾🇺🇾🇺🇾, your videos are awesome‼️‼️‼️
Класная конструкция пилы. СПАСИБО. У нас обычно просто палку в дугу. иногда на толстых бревнах не хватало загиба.
Thank you!
Ingenious method for cooking chicken next to that particular fire.
Thanks!
Nice video!! Never seen this way of making a fire for cooking!! Wonderfull!! Greatings from Holland! ( no comments and talking are for sure the new youtubers !!!!)
Thanks!
