      Carter, if you want to get back to basics and pare things down, try kayak fishing. Three rods is about max and three small flats (with basically is in this video). Shuck the "aggregate tonnage" and just have fun. I'm in my mid 50's, been kayaking for the last five years and I still feel like I'm 12 again every single time I launch.

    When I was a kid, my grandmother would always take me out fishing at my uncle’s pond. She passed on a few years back, and I’ve been wanting to start fishing again as a way to reconnect and honor her memory. We would always just use worms that I’d gotten from her garden, so this video helped a lot with showing me what to look for in an actual tackle box. As soon as it starts to thaw out a bit, I’m definitely taking this advice. Thanks for the video!

  • @ninetoedlizard6650
    @ninetoedlizard6650 4 года назад +208

    As a 13 year old whose been fishing my whole life, this was helpful, I'm gonna start making a new tackle box soon, I've always just used worms and a hook for the most part, but I'm gonna start using lures and better hooks

    • @lnhislmage
      @lnhislmage 4 года назад +39

      As a 55 year old who’s been fishing my whole life, I have spent enough on tackle to pay for a college education and yet I almost never go fishing without picking up some night crawlers and minnows unless I am ice fishing then you have to have waxies . But don’t get me wrong, I really love my selection of tackle as well as my rods and reels but I gotta tell ya, live bait is the best way to guarantee success. If I knew then what I know now, I would have spent a lot more time fishing and enjoying life. Nobody ever gets to the end of their life and says “gosh I wish I would have spent more time working”.

    • @jaquevius
      @jaquevius 3 года назад +3

      Yep, live bait almost always guarantees more bites. Lures start to bring in more of a “sport or skill” aspect. If you can master fishing a soft plastic worm with a Texas rig, you will have the best go to bait for the rest of your life....and it’s fun. Spinner baits are versatile too so I agree with this video 100%. In the hot temps, fishing top water though as the sun rises or sets is the most fun however. That’s where a basic buzz bait comes in.

    I just build a few basic tackle boxes for my brother and my brother in law for Father’s Day. All of these things were in the boxes I put together for them. Some other nice basic baits for a beginner box would include some inline spinners, a hallow body frog (for when the vegetation is just too thick to fish below the surface), a popper, a chatterbait, a jerkbait and some soft plastic swimbaits with keel weighted swimbait hook with a twist lock.

    Nice tip here , buy the eagle claw dual lock snaps (I like size 2) so you can quickly change your baits with out re-tying your baits constantly and it also gives the baits more wiggle

    I usually catfish. The first time I caught a large mouth was in my dads friends pond he stocks when I was only 8. We ran out of worms I caught a sunny with the last one and I wasn't done fishing so I just tossed it back in the water every one kept telling me it's to big for this pond there's nothing that big in here a few minutes later I got a huge hit and when I said I had something they just thought it was the sunny pulling still until it really started to take my line I ended up reeling in a huge large mouth. He didn't even know it was in his pond.

      Dwight Stewart fishing isn't about success it's about having fun, and I'm pretty sure every single person here would say it's more fun to read the fish and use knowledge to fish with plastics than it is to just throw out a worm and a bobber.

    • @dwightstewart7181
      @dwightstewart7181 6 лет назад

      Asher Q .. That's sheer nonsense. There's just as much skill, experience, and knowledge (and "fun") associated with float fishing as there is with any other form of fishing. For example, if you don't put that bait where the fish are, you're obviously not going to catch anything. And, with the right gear/bait, you don't need hundreds of dollars of cheap plastics.

  • @Rickhef

    Folks Gene knows what he is talking about.. I have never even heard of a Niko rig until I watched one of Gene's Video's. I did exactly what he said to do and went to Lake Fork in Texas, which can be extremely hard to catch a Bass there, and I pulled out a Niko rig and caught a 2 and half pounder within 5 minutes, and my boss who is a long time bass fisherman caught nothing that day and nobody in the other dozen boats around us caught anything either. Thank you Gene, you are a great Teacher! So listen to him and you will catch fish.

    I fished when I was younger with my dad, getting back into it on my own now that I'm done with school.
    Lots of videos for fishing that have "basics" and "for beginners" in the title but already assume a lot knowledge. I really appreciate this true breakdown of the basics!

    Like many of the comments, I appreciate these videos and especially his sincere approach. I used to fish as a kid but life took over and I’ve returned to my favorite past time. Thank you for what you do.

      Fish it like a texas rig or a jig. It comes through cover and over structure well.

    Used to fish alot by myself as a kid ages 8-13 when I lived in the country right by a huge lake and creek and stuff. Moved to the suburbs and a whole different state and haven't had the chance Im now 18 and drive and have more freedom and Im getting back into something I loved so dearly as a kid and this helped me out a little even though before watching I picked up a lot of stuff but most of it you discussed here just have me a good idea. Thanks man happy fishing.

    Thanks for the suggestions for this first timer. I picked up my BassPro catalog, went down your list, and found everything you mentioned. Time to get some fishing tackle. I already selected a rod and reel combo, fishing line and a tackle bag. Taking small steps to put this together.

    Great stuff Gene. I love that you are getting back to basics. not that i dont love all of your videos. I like that you break it down that fish either want it on the bottom/slow or a moving bait. Sometimes I over complicate things and its refreshing to see someone break it down and remind me to keep it simple.
